I know that a diligent author will not omit important facts, so I tend to avoid the genre. I also avoid books about disabilities because I have one, and find most authors either take on a "pity me" or a "pretend I am completely normal" attitude when the truth of living with a disability is somewhere in the middle. However, I was drawn to this book by Reeve's own writing style. I read an exceprt of his newest book in a magazine, and decided to purchase "Still Me". I'm glad I did- I *really* enjoyed this book. Reeve has a remarkable writing style- he managed to seamlessly layer events from his entire life along with descriptions of his life post-injury and scientific information in every chapter. Even though the book continually shifted focus and timeframe, it was not a struggle to keep up with all the details. I have his next book ("Nothing is Impossible") on hold at the library, and can't wait to continue reading about Reeve's life. His writing style is open, honest, and warm all at once. He writes about his condition, and both his acceptance and rejection of it, with honesty and dignity. It's so refreshing to read about someone who is not afraid to be angry and proud about their situation. I truly hope that he is able to step out of his chair at some point in time, but even if he does not, he is truly a Superman in every respect of the word.

I was captivated with Reeve's courage. It's books like this that we need so badly during these very tense days in our world. My son is severely autistic and Chris helped me come to terms with our family's crisis and limitations. I am writing a book about my son Stephen and am listing Chris as one of my inspirations. It's not necessarily what happens to us in life, but how we react to it...that is what is important and what will be remembered by others. Bravo Chris!!

Review: Unlike about any other American I did not care for any of the Supermans in the trilogy that much, so when Christopher Reeves got seirouly hurt, I did not pay as close of attention as hundreds of the fans did to the facts surounding the unfortunate, and very unexpected tragedy that happend to Christopher Reeves. However when Christopher Reeves released his first popular book "Still Me" I just thought it would be cool to know what exatly happend to Christopher Reeves on that fatful day of the horse accident that broke Mr. Reeves neck. This book gave me all of the facts that I was curious about and then some. The book made me think differently about life. Its certainly one of the most profound pieces of reading I have come across before. Only Christopher Reeve could have explained his story has good as this book was. Buy it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Read this book--and you'll never complain again Review: Christopher Reeve sums up his story of incredible courage in one sentence: "I have my down days, but I haven't been incapacitated by them." Amazing--a quadriplegic who says he has not been incapacitated! For me, this book has a simple message: Most of us have no reason to complain, not ever again. If you can tie your shoes, go to the bathroom without assistance, walk outdoors on a beautiful day, hug your children, feed yourself, swing a golf club, cook a meal, take a deep breath--then count those blessings, and many others that physically able people enjoy. And I welcomed his comment that "God doesn't make these things happen. . . .But where God comes in, where grace enters, is in the strength you find to deal with it. You may not know where it comes from, but there's an enormous power at work."
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A new beginning... Review: In this part autobiography, part answer to his fan's questions concerning his accident, Christopher Reeve provides an incredible look at his life from both sides of the traumatic accident that left him paralyzed. In reading this book, I found a man quite different from the average "movie star", a very strong and surprisingly complex person who, because of a great inner strength and supportive family and friends, was able to survive and go on with his life after what would surely cause most people to give up on life. Christopher Reeve continues to show himself to be a true "superman".

It is beautifully written with just enough self pity to help the reader feel the trauma of the daily life of Christopher Reeve but he doesn't wallow in it he sates facts. He is a really lucky man to have such a wonderful family and I admire his strength in fighting for the rights of others. I look forward to another book by Christopher Reeve a true Superman. I would also like to wish him all my hope that the researchers will come with something for his particular back problem and we do see thim walk again.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Still Me, Still Super Review: I was impressed by Christopher Reeve's account of the difficulties through which he has passed along the path of enduring his disability. With no time to prepare for the catastrophe, he moved from the famous Superman actor to one who could not enjoy the luxury of a private shower or bowel movement--one who could not breathe without the assistance of a respirator. I was impressed by the ways he grew as a human being. He learned how much he loved his wife. Also he realized how much more difficult his life could have been if he had not been wealthy to afford needed equipment and assistance. Thirdly, he realized that he could help other mobility impaired individuals. As the author of SOLOMON'S PORCH, a new novel about a man with CIDP, which is a rare and serious neurological disorder similar to Guillain-Barre' syndrome, I have noticed that people with unusual neurological problems such as GBS and CIDP are almost never mentioned in the pleas for money. Not once did I hear a word about Guillain-Barre in the pleas for funding for stem-cell research. Spinal cord injuries, such as the one described eloquently by Christopher Reeve in STILL ME, receive much more attention. Mr. Reeve seems to have a "trickle-down" plan. If something is done for the spinal cord injury victims, perhaps someday scientists will find the time and money to do research on the rare problems and all mobility impaired people may someday benefit. I hope that Mr. Reeve will write about two more subjects. First I would like to hear more about his spiritual development. He merely hints at the changes in this aspect of his life. Secondly since he is physically a giant, I would love to know where he buys his adaptive equipment. Truly the book is inspiring. My husband and I benefitted from listening to it and sharing his pain.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Inspiring Review: This is one of the most inspiring books I have read in a long time. The courage that Christopher Reeves had in accepting the new reality of his life and making the most of it is really amazing. He writes this novel with so much honesty and clarity. It is great to see the depths of his character and his willingness to share that with others. Somehow the challenges of my life seem so minute compared to what he had to overcome but he has inspired me to really live life fully and passionately even in the face of challenging times.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A warm, honest look into Reeve's life...pre/post injury days Review: Still Me is a look into the life of Chritopher Reeve, both before and after his injury. Although Reeves best accolade is not writing, he does gives the reader an honest look into the adversity that he has encountered. I read this book out of personal interests and found it to be both interesting and encouraging. He recalls the events leading up to the moment of his accident, and also take us through the emotions he felt as he began to understand the depth of his injury, his experiences in rehab, and the ongoing adjustment process. Reeves also shares some delicately humorous moments...sure to make you laugh and cry. The reason I gave it four stars is that he also goes into great depths about his acting career...something that may not be of interest to everyone...but I can certainly understand his doing so. (I did come to learn the depth of his schooling as an actor, which I didn't know.) We all revel in our "glory days," and I'm certain it was (is) bittersweet for Reeves to do so. I can totally relate to that myself. But, this takes me to another point. Although Reeves shares the devastating heartache he, his wife Dana, and their family has endured, he also offers hope and inspiration. What a beautiful example of love they both share. So many couples call it quits when petty problems arise, but Chris and Dana show us what "in sickness and in health" really entails. Reeves is also doing a service for all of us who are in wheelchairs, by whatever cause, through his Foundation to raise funds and awareness for medical research that will lead to a cure for, not only spinal cord injury paralysis, but for many neurological diseases, such as MS and Parkinson's. He has and continues to use his 'public eye persona' to draw attention to this matter. One of my favorite parts of the book is this.... "When the first Superman movie came out, I (Reeves) was frequently asked, 'What is a hero?' I remember the glib response I repeated so many times. My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences - a soldier who crawels out of a foxhole to drag his injured buddy to safety. And I also meant individuals who are slighty larger than life: Houdini, Lindbergh, John Wayne, JFK, and Joe DiMaggio. But now, my definition is completely differnt. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to perservere and endure in spite of overwhelming circumstances...." Bravo Christopher!
