Rating: Summary: a touching reading Review: The author of bestselling "The Man Who Listens To Horses"reprises his relationship with "Shy Boy," a wild mustang he acclimated. In succinct yet powerful prose the author relates his first encounter with the horse during an exciting ride through the rugged Nevada desert. Well documented in a PBS series several years ago, Roberts' unique approach to gentling horses is a decidedly humane approach involving the imitation of an equine body language. Eventually, Roberts offers his mustang a choice - does he want to be free again and run back to the wilderness? The answer to that questions will bring a tear to even the most jaundiced eye.
Rating: Summary: Look at the pictures, skip the text Review: The photographs that accompany the text in this book are wonderful. But that is the beginning and the end of my positive feedback on this book. To start with, this book is based on a false premise. I have experience with the BLM mustang adoption program which 'Shy Boy' was a part of. These horses are accustomed to people and trained to be haltered & handled before they are ever adopted out. So Shy Boy's 'wonderful' progress using Monty's method is a sham. He started out with a horse that was accustomed to people. But then, why should any of us be surprised? This is the second book of Monty Roberts' which I have read (the first being 'The Man Who Listens to Horses') and it is the second book founded mostly on lies. I am aghast that knowledgeable 'horse people' recommend these books to anyone, and I hope to never have to read one again. This is a nice story about a man 'taming' a wild horse. But that's what it is -- a story. If this book were sold as fiction, I would have no complaint. But anyone looking for information on how someone actually worked with a wild horse will be -- or SHOULD be -- disappointed by this book.
Rating: Summary: a beautiful story Review: The story and pictures in this book are wonderful and inspirational. Monty Roberts has withstood terrible adversity to bring an important message to the world. This book is appropriate for all ages.
Rating: Summary: think big picture here Review: Think about what it took for the young mustang to run for 30 hours (terror, and will of steel). Think about how long he ran before he gave up from exhaustion and fear. Think about what it took for Monty's horse(s) to run for 30 hours after this determined wild horse (and notice that he minimizes the impact on his own animals - a point that should not be overlooked, regardless of the fitness of his mounts). Think about where sweet Shy Boy is now and what he's doing (standing alone in a dark and lonely stall or alone in a remote sand paddock on Monty's farm). Think about who benefitted from this chase. He created a dependent out of a wild and formerly independent creature, where's the true love of horses and the common decency in that? Domesticated animals are one thing -- this is entirely another. Think about the big picture and the motives. Then think twice about supporting a man with only his own gain in mind.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Story Review: This book is an amazing work by Monty Roberts. It toched my heart. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a heart-warming story. Wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Shy boy is worth every minute I spent reading it. Review: This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's even better than Mr. Roberts's first book. I was incredibly moved by the story of Shy Boy, and I was inspired by Monty Roberts's overall message. What a great book! I couldn't wait to bring this book home and read it. I read it in one sitting and cried at the ending and then I thought about it all day. Monty Roberts is amazing--the story of Shy Boy is unforgettable. Read it! You won't be sorry! Animal lovers everywhere--not just horse lovers--will fall in love with this book. I didn't want it to end. What Monty Roberts can teach us is priceless. I loved this book.
Rating: Summary: Get the Message Review: This was a wonderful book and I think the message he is bringing to people about the treatment of animals is "way" more important than the "disrepancies" some people may say they found. I read the book straight through and was overjoyed that someone like Monty Roberts has taken it upon himself to show people a more humane way of training horses. The photos alone were worth the price of the book.
Rating: Summary: Thought-Provoking for All Horse Lovers! Review: To all the critics who thought that Monty had no business in capturing this wild mustang...Shy Boy was ALREADY in the BLM adoption program and was lucky enough to have Monty adopt him! After adoption, Shy Boy was re-released into a captive wild herd on thousands of acres, and from there Monty fulfilled his dream of joining-up with a wild horse (he had done so as a child, but felt the need to do it again as an adult). This is an awesome true story of a horse and horse-lover, it will keep you interested until the end.
Rating: Summary: great read Review: What an unexpected satisfaction! Prior to shyboy I had read 4 books about war--this wouldn't have been something I would have purchased on my own inclination. I'm a city guy and never had experiences with horses, However, after reading a few articles about Monty and his philosophy about battling the senseless mistreatment of horses--and people, I felt compelled to investigate. This story is gripping throughout and rekindled my faith in humanity. Didn't read Roberts' first book. But will certainly now.
Rating: Summary: READ this book! Review: Whether you are a horse lover or not, this is a fantastic read that will change your life! The story hooked me from the prologue and I couldn't put the book down. It's one of those wonderful, rare books that lingers with you after you finish it-not only because it's riveting, but also because you feel inspired that there are such great people in the world doing such great things. I grew up riding mustangs in Nevada, and this book captures the great spirit and romance of the wild horse. The story and the pictures are absolutely beautiful, and I guarantee you'll cry at the ending.
