Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Stepping Heavenward Review: "Stepping Heavenward" was an infusion of light and whole living. The book is wondrously devoid of Christian buzzwords, formulas and codes. It was published in 1869 and is an account of a young girl's day-to-day activities, interwoven with her quest to better her life. Watching her godly Mother, with whom she becomes easily irritated at times, Kate learns about striving for excellence. The book portrays a no-nonsense approach to Christian living; still the romantic, artistic qualities of the author shine through without unctuous fluff. The book lacks not in laughter all the while inciting the reader to ponder deeper, eternal matters. The early writings of this nineteen-year-old part child, part woman, reveal an innocence coupled with an acute awareness of her human nature, that is, the selfish, sinful side of humanness, unchecked by the Almighty. The author doubtlessly reflects a typical 19th century young woman in certain ways. Yet one may see that small matters sometimes are pivotal. Indeed the continual, though not necessarily consistent, exercises in noble deeds and hard self-examination propel this young woman to attain a rare depth of character. Her brutal honesty and freckle-faced candor are truly refreshing, and her artfully penned expressions provide great reading - entertaining, spontaneous and articulate. Though written in diaried form, a theme surfaces here as in the hymn, "More Love to Thee, O Christ," also written by the author of this book.

Review: All I can do is say "ditto" to everyone else's reviews! :) I, too, was stunned when I saw myself in 16-yr-old Katherine at the beginning of the book (and lamented because I'm only now, at age 29, learning those same lessons! All those wasted years!). Buy this book for every girl you know!

Wives will find that we all face similar struggles, but can always look heavenward and seek guidance from Christ. Prentiss only confirms this truth in her personal walk.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: theologically challenging- another perspective Review: Dittos on all the other reviews- but an added note: Katy's "resignation" to the "will of God" may cause many to review their understanding of that revealed will (from scripture). I try not to be a "name it, claim it", selfish modern charismatic, BUT I do believe divine healing is in the atonement, and that we are healed as we are able to receive that gift according to our faith. (This is exampled and directly commanded time and again in scripture.) I applaud and desire the kind of submission to the divine will displayed by Katy, but readers please bear in mind, God HAS revealed many things concerning His will to us in scripture. We must bear all things- indeed, as we endure temptation- but that temptation is clearly stated as not coming from the hand of God. Believing as I do in God's will to heal does not take away the need to trust Him just as fully when I am sick, especially if that healing does not spring forth speedily. But I prefer not to blame the hand of Jehovah Raphe, the Lord that healeth thee, for what may be my selfish motives, or lack of faith. You that share my perspective on healing being in the atonement, must too "trust him though He slay me" as Job, but with the hindsight and instruction of the Word that reveals it was not God, but Satan that was doing the slaying. And with repentance from our pride, and continued trust in Him, our deliverance is on the way, as was Job's. (Who had not the new and better covenant, or even the old one!)

Review: For any Christian man, woman, or a child, this is a wonderful book about the peace and joy, but the continual growth that marks the Christian life. This is one of my favorite books. Besides the vivacity and cheeriness of the main character, Katy, I loved reading about her journey heavenward. I do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: An outstanding commentary on Christian growth. Review: Had I not known better, I would have thought I had written it myself. So often Katy's diary expressed thoughts and feelings that I had thought were mine alone. How encouraging to know that others have the same experiences.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Encouraging & Uplifting Review: Have you ever been overwhelmed by your struggles with sin and holiness? This book reminds us that we are not alone, but that all believers walk the long, difficult, but ultimately joyfully path of Christianity. It is an encouragement to watch Katy mature and grow, even when she sees no growth in herself. Her battles are the same battles we all face: pride, anger, a feeling of distance from God, troublesome relatives... When times of difficulty come she finds her best refuge in prayer and the shed blood of Jesus and reminds you to do the same. For a good laugh, cry, and reflection on God's great love and patience with us, spending some time reading this book.
