Rating: Summary: Thankfully brief Review: A small book as befits the title. This liberal screed equates compassion with class envy, appropriating others resources, and keeping the needy and downtrodden just that way. What a fraud.
Rating: Summary: Wellstone in 2002! Review: After reading this book and listening to Senator Wellstone speak I have realized that things can be changed and we as citizens can take back the power from the corporations and the super rich. Mr. Wellstone is right on when he says that most people are socially liberal, but vote the other way over just one issue (we know what that is!) He was going to receive my vote before I read the book, but now he is not only getting my vote, I am helping volunteer for his campaign.
Rating: Summary: The bus. Review: After reading this book i had the pleasure to meet paul wellstone and his family. he talked to me, (a university student) at length about my education experience. a very compassionate man, he would always stand up for what he thought was right. this was the first book that turned me on to politics. read this book and understand that some politicians fight with you and some fight against you.
Rating: Summary: Where is the beef Review: As a conservative I was hoping to see some of the light of the liberal side. Unfortunately that did not happen with this book. Wellstone never provides reasoning as to why wealth should be distributed by the government (also known as socialism). He like many liberals are far to idealistic in thinking that they can eradicate every evil from the earth.
Rating: Summary: If Only...... Review: As a longtime Wellstone supporter, I was truly devastated at his passing this last fall. I had purchased this book quite a bit earlier, and, regrettably, never pulled it off the shelf to read until after the Senator's death. "The Conscience of a Liberal" provides a detailed description of the author's life and how his political ideals were shaped by his own personal history. It is rare in American politics today to find a politician who actually believes what he says; and rarer still to find one who backs up his words with action. Paul Wellstone did both, and we will forever miss him. Reading this book will give you a short glimpse into the heart and mind of a genuine "Mr. Smith."
Rating: Summary: Great!!! Review: I haven't gotten this book yet but I know David Wellstone, well I knew him. He was one of the best senators of our time. Buy this book!!!
Rating: Summary: Personal and searing Review: I met Paul Wellstone about 4 years ago when he was stumping for Bill Bradley, and he was magnetic. Luckily, this wonderful book he left behind is such an impassioned call to arms that it's more liable to get you active in your community than it is to make you sad that Paul died. I know for me, it has already encouraged me to start attending "meet-ups" for the 2004 presidential race. (Speaking of which, Wellstone drops a few hints in this book that he wanted to make the run himself, which DOES make it sad that he never got the chance.) This book is not perfect. Wellstone uses WAY too many exclamation points, and his writing style doesn't exactly sing. Also, as in far too many other political books, there are too many statistics and figures and a little too much inside baseball. Yet I found something bracing -- something that made me literally stop and think -- in nearly every chapter, sometimes even every couple of pages. And the personal parts of the book (when Wellstone does something almost no politician EVER does, and writes about true and very real personal difficulties in his life) are downright searing. I've repeatedly read the portion about Wellstone's father's slow death and I cry every time. I found so much to unexpectedly relate to in this book; it was a revelation.
Rating: Summary: wellstone for president in 2004 Review: I read this book in one sitting despite the moments of exhilaration where I wanted to jump up and go door to door for his presidential campaign. His underdog story of grassroots politics and academic idealism tested under the fire of the Senate is not only inspiring but a great insight to someone who doesn't understand how things work on the inside, even after watching Cspan every day. This book should be required reading in high school civics courses, Lord knows it would do more to politically motivate folks than memorizing the Constitution. Minnesota you are lucky to have him at bat for you.
Rating: Summary: Wellstone's unique perspective in print Review: I truly believe that if the American people were given access to information provided in this book, it will rekindle the nation's lost interest in politics since people will once again realize government does affect our lives. Wellstone presents his case with true passion and even throws in his ideas for solutions occasionally. It digresses at times but he eventually pulls it all back together. great work.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: I urge EVERYONE to read this book. You don't have to agree with Paul's politics to be greatly influenced by this book. His focus wasn't about politics, but people. Plain and simple, his first priority was people. Reading this book will make you want to get involved.
