Rating: Summary: At long last.... Review: ......the shortened version of all the rumors, gossip, innuendo and specualtion associated with these stars in one easy-to-find compendium. Her sources aresome of the worst books on Hollywood and its stars, and she all too often reverts to anonymous sources.I enjoy a number of internet lists and sites regarding classic Hollywood and this book is not going over well with those who have a real knowledge of old Hollywood, a type of knowledge not reflected in this book.
Rating: Summary: The Juiciest of Books Review: I am a big fan of Jane Ellen Wayne and this book is not a disappointment. I was especially enthralled reading about Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. Fascinating. If you like to read about Hollywood women stars from the forties and fifties you will love this book.
Rating: Summary: For Movie Fans Review: I am an avid fan of old films so I was delighted to find The Golden Girls of MGM in my book store. Though I knew a lot about MGM, I discovered a great deal more in Wayne's thick and delicious book. These beautfiful and talented actresses are a great study. Wayne dishes the dirt, but she sticks to the basics as well. The book is written in a breathless style. I will read it again and agin over the years so that I can relive those Golden years that were magical, but not forgotten, thanks to this book,
Rating: Summary: Very good reading Review: I am very impressed with this book. I am learning things in every chapter. I have read it several times - and haven't done this in ages - so I have decided to read every page. I was going to skip some chapters of stars I wasn't fond of, but found I was learning things about others in those chapters. I have read most of Jane Ellen Wayne's books and love her style. I think The Golden Girls of MGM is her best.
Rating: Summary: Golden memories Review: I bought The Golden Girls of MGM after reading the review in Publishers Weekly. It's a very well-researched book with film listings for all the great actresses. The book is about MGM, too. It's a revealing book that brings tears and laughter and lots of surprises.
Rating: Summary: Hollywood at its best Review: I bought The Golden Girls of MGM after reading the sensational review in Publishers Weekly. They were right about how simply delicious this book really is. If you're a movie buff, read it! Hollywood's glamour faded in the sixties but this book will bring back the wonderful memories of what it used to be.
Rating: Summary: Biased and uninteresting Review: I bought this book at a local bookstore and I'm grateful because it'll be much easier to return there than on Amazon. Some reviews said that this author didn't say much about anyone but I disagree. I found her bias towards and against some actresses obvious. This leads me to believe that we are only getting half of the story. I mean calling Joan Crawford a "victim" is laughable to me. If you know anything about Joan, you know that she was no one's victim. Also, many of the conversations that Wayne quotes have no source. How do we know that they were real or just garbage that she made up? Either she stole some of these quotes from other books or they existed in her head. We don't know because she rarely explains where she got her information. This is like a one-sided Cliff's notes version of the lives of these fabulous women. And if anyone would like to use this as source material, may I suggest using it to solve the mystery of how so many beautiful, fascinating, sexy women fell for Mickey Rooney? I would really like an explaination on that!!
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I enjoyed Golden Girls of MGM very, very much. I consider it a Hollywood reference book. Although Jane Ellen Wayne has a humorous writing style at times, she gets her facts straight and documents the iives of Hollywood legends accurately. So much has been written about Lana Turner, Greta Garbo. Liz Taylor, etc., but Wayne comes up with facts that weren't previously known. For those who are not acquainted with the Golden Era, this book is an excellent chance to read about it. There's much to learn about MGM and the great LOuis B. Mayer and the star system. It's a very good read. I recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: HOLLYWOOD'S STARLETS Review: I felt this book transported you back to the "good ol days". I learned about several stars that I never really paid attention to. It is a quick read and was nice to have different chapters about different stars and to learn about more than one star in a book. It's amazing how much Hollywood hasn't changed over the years....affairs, drinking, drugs, sex and temper tantrums. Just that none of it was public knowledge like today is. After reading the book, I went out and bught several old movies just to re-live their works.
Rating: Summary: Hollywood at its best Review: I loved reading about Greta Garbo, Jeanette MacDonald, Judy Garland and the other MGM divas. The Golden Girls of MGM was very good reading. I would recommend it to all those who love movies made when Hollywood was the center of the earth.
