Review: I just finished reading this book yesterday, and i have to tell you this book was very well written. When i was reading the book, i felt as if i knew Shaq and i was hanging with him. He told about his early life which i have read in other Shaq books and this one is the best one. He told about his father that pushed him to get better in everything he does. He talked about the media talking smack to him, if he doesnt do well just because he is such a big guy. He talked about his movies and albums which he drops. He talked about the fans, players in the NBA in his words suck, and about the NBA life. He did a good job showing that the NBA is not all just Money and Fame, it shows him as a good father and a good role model to young people. If you like Shaq, the lakers, or basketball you have to read Shaq Talks Back: The Uncensored Word on My Life and Winning in the NBA. You wont regreat it.

Summary: Insightful, But Sophomoric
Review: I love the Lakers and I love Shaq, and the truth is that I would have bought and read this book no matter how badly it was written, simply because I am intrigued by the inner workings of an NBA team and the private life of such a huge superstar athlete. For that purpose, this book was exactly what I wanted.

With that said, my objective opinion of the book is that it was half intrigue, and half boredom. I liked Shaq describe his childhood in New Jersey and all the hardships he and his family endured. I also enjoyed learning about all the drama that unfolded within the Laker organization when Del Harris was coaching the team. Shaq proves to be a daring author, not hesitating to tell the reader what he really feels about certain players, coaches, and members of management. I didn't really care for the play-by-play narration of the games that the Lakers played against the Indiana Pacers during the NBA Finals. It was long and unnecessary. Shaq also tends to repeat the same information over and over again. In fact, I can recall one instance where he said the same thing twice on the same page.

If you're a Shaq fan you'll enjoy this book. However, in strict literary terms, this book seems like the rough draft of something that should have been revised and drastically shortened. However, Shaq isn't really an author, so the reader has to keep this in mind and give him some leeway. Nevertheless, I still recommend this book.

Summary: One Slam Dunk Of A Book
Review: I must admit that I was fairly impressed with Shaquille O'Neal's book. I don't know what I truly expected, but I must say that I was most pleasantly surprised.

In "Shaq Talks Back," O'Neal does just that. He vents out at all of the people that told him that he couldn't do it. His first chapter draws you in and doesn't let you go. He touches upon his life on and off the court, his amazing title run with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his "friendships" with other players in the league.

I have heard many critics claim that the language and writing style takes away from the book, but I truly think that is what makes the book. Shaq is simply being Shaq, and who would want it any other way. After all, this is his book. I liked the flow of the book, and the unique writing style made one entertaining read.

Overall, it was a really good book, and the humor made it rather enjoyable. This was a good, solid effort.

Summary: Everything you wanted to know about the NBA
Review: I never knew what a pro athlete's life was like till I read this book. Everything from the conflicts in the locker room to the thrill of winning a championship to the benefits of strip clubs - this book has it all.

What touched me the most was Shaq's relationship with his family. When you watch him on the court, you see him as this unstoppable force and not as a father or son. He really opens up and talks about personal issues and situations that are both honest and touching.

But I think the thing that really impressed me was he sense of humor. Didn't know the big guy had it in him. I've never been a Laker fan, or even a Shaq fan, but I do respect him more and understand the life that has chosen him. I wish him the best in his carrer and hope he keeps practicing those free throws.

Summary: Entertaining and enjoyable. I am proud of you Shaq!
Review: I truly am proud of Shaq. I have always been a fan, starting when he and Larry Brown couldn't quite get over the hump in Baton Rouge and when Penny Hardaway's trail of tears always seemed to make the Magic slip up in Orlando. So needless to say, his move to L.A. and subsequent submission to the coaching mastermind of Phil Jackson, especially in the wake of an NBA with no Mike, was a great surprise.

As for the book, I ordered it expecting more of the same ole' boastful, jubilant can't get enough fun Shaq, and I found, in addition to all those things, a new Shaq that makes this book worth the read all the more. Written in a style that only Shaq could pull off, the book traces his life from NJ to the south and his time in high school, college, the Olympics and NBA. It gives the reader wonderful insight into a very public figure and clues you into why Shaquille O'Neal is Shaq.

As for the book's merits as non-fiction, many critics have poo-poo'd the book's informal tone and Shaqisms, but frankly, that makes it worth the read (it is a quick read, easily finished in a weekend). Who wants to read a book on Shaq in the third person, or the first person for that matter? Clearly, you want to read his autobiography in the Shaqperson! Admittedly, some of the one liners and especially his use of the beatnic term 'cat' are tiresome, but ultimately are worth the trouble.

Ultimately see a lot of things about Shaq that you don't catch on TNT or on the back of a trading card. Shaq is genuine, he is taking care of his family, he has learned to let the pundits be pundits (because that what they are paid to do), and is just trying to enjoy life. He has become a very impressive, very mature man, and I certainly respect him for that.

Bottomline: For the sportsfan or Shaqfan, this is a slam dunk.

Summary: Candid, Touching & Very Funny --A Must Read for all NBA Fans
Review: Let's get one thing straight -- I've always been, and will alwyas be, a New York Knicks fan. But I was curious what Shaq, who seems so gregarious and charismatic in his public life, had to say about his personal life and his views on the NBA. This book didn't dissapoint. Shaq is very candid about the turmoil he has encountered on and off the court -- his stories about his father and his grandmother are truly touching. His own voice, compassionate and very, very funny, really comes through here. He shows himself to be a caring and concerned superstar. His behind-the-scenes tales about the Magic and the Lakers are the type of inside stuff any NBA fan would love. Not at all a fluff, celebrity bio -- highly reccomended if you care about the game of basketball and where it's headed.

Summary: If you a basketball fan
Review: Shaq gives us a look at his life in Shaq talks back. Shaq, talks about what it was like growing up for him, what really went down with him and Penny, and the whole reason he left Orlando. He just talks about the everyday life for him as a basketball player. IF you are a Shaq fan you don't want to miss this book, you will find out what he thinks of other players in the game, how him and Kobe learned to play together. He didn't come off as arrogant as some other players who books I've read, he realizes that he is blessed. Don't this book by the biggest player in the game today.

Summary: Shaq's life Uncensored
Review: Shaq takes you through his earlydays growing up in Newark, New Jersey and talks about his familyand friends. Then later on in the book, he talks about how he started playing basketball, beingbigger than most kids his age. He holds nothing back, always speaking what's on his mind. Towards the end of the book, he describes how the 2000 L.A. LAKERS got it all together and beat the Indiana Pacers in the finals. If you're a fan of Shaq or the Lakers, this book is for you.

Summary: #1 Laker Fan
Review: Shaq talks back is the best book i've ever read! I've never really liked reading, but this book i could not put down. I loved reading the playoffs part of the book over and over. I also liked how he talked about his relationship with kobe and the rest of the lakers. Another part that was great is how shaq explained why the old lakers couldn't win and what phil jackson brought to the team. It was a really wonderful experience!
