Summary: Great Book -- I laughed out loud
Review: The author has a wonderfully dark sense of humor that he uses to describe very disturbing events and situations. I found that for parts 1 & 2 of the book (initial stages of prison life and prison life), I couldn't stop laughing -- nor could I put the book down. Part 3 was his personal story which was interesting, but more serious in tone.

The author was a typical white collar worker in the telecommunications industry. (At one point in passing he mentions that he worked across an aisleway from a guy names Scott who was trying to get a cartoon syndicated... ) He was put into prison for killing a man and his story unfolds.

He makes several "friends" which probably saved his life -- and he provides enough conversation to picture each as an individual character. He does not make excuses for the action that got him there in the first place -- which I appreciated -- but he tells the story in a manner in which I completely identify with him.

I hope he never has to go through this situation again (I heard he is on parole) but I would love to read more from Mr. Lerner.

Summary: Don't Let a Murderer Profit
Review: The author killed a man ("self defense' with a belt and a plastic bag. Uh-huh) and now profits from this book while the victim's family wakes up every day without him. By all means, read this book at the library, buy it used, or borrow it from a friend, but do NOT purchase it new.

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: The moment you hear the author utter his first"dawg", you know you're in for an entirely original, funny, and terrifying prison book reading experience. MBA Jimmy Lerner is thrown into the dank bowels of the prison system, yet manages to inflect wit, humor and poignancy as he paints sometimes sympathetic portaits of the worst of society's miscreants. He recounts the tedious minutiae of everyday prison routine in a hilarious and easy to read manner. As a reader of many prison books, I highly recommend this author's dark but delightful writing style about one of the most horrifying experiences any human being could ever encounter.

Summary: lame
Review: this guy is the lamest guy ever. you know everything he says in here is garbage. gets boring real fast, using the same language over and over like he remembers exact conversations. he even ends each passage with some new slang he learned. after about the 50th time i saw him end a passage with "...and it aint nothin nice" i almost threw myself off my balcony. quickly trashed the book. i find it almost impossible to believe that a loser like this didnt get at least beat up in prison. he probably spent his time in p.c. after his first day behind home plate. spelling "fixin" like "fittin." such an annoying jerk. get off of yourself, you helmet.

Summary: Unlike the author, you've got a lot coming!
Review: This is a brilliant work. A first time author that is revealed as a masterful storyteller. Even better, he has a story to tell that is worth listening to.

Understand this. His story and the tragic events that occurred, and the serious consequences, could have been yours. Or mine. And that flat scares the hell out of me.

Which is another reason, beyond mere amusement, to read this book. Here are some major life lessons, bought and paid (dearly) for, that we can benefit from. We all know (within a few degrees of separation) a Jimmy Lerner. Living too close to the edge of immanent self-destruction. Most somehow muddle through life and escape unscathed. Some get nailed. And then some unlucky bastards get smacked down big-time. Jimmy is one of the latter. The unfortunate part is that he was mostly a victim himself even though he does not for a second deny his own culpability or try to weasel out of taking responsibility for his actions, or inactions. This is why I like the guy. He was (sadly) a stand-up con. Now he is simply a stand-up guy and a heck of a writer. I wish him well.

Buy this book. Share it with someone you know that is too close to the edge. It may serve to pull them back a little and possibly save their sorry ass.

Summary: Where are the rest ?
Review: Well where are the rest of the telecommunications' victim-employees who could tell a similar story ?

I am not blaming the "job" for the substance abuse but the artificial environment and irrelevant make work waste of talent is a heavy contributor to individual and corporate disaster.

Summary: fascinating and hilarious
Review: What surprises me most about this book is how laugh out loud funny it is. It's one of funniest books I've read and this in contrast with descriptions of what is best called a living hell. Jimmy Lerner provides a realistic and captivating account of prison life. I only wish he'd write a part two.
