Rating: Summary: A story of a father's love for his son. Review: A wonderful story of a father's love. A good book for a football fan. A wonderful book for a parent!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful mix of football and family... Review: Another Season is a well written story of one family's life in that it intertwines the success of one of the strongest football coaches (NFL and College) and that of his personal life. My wife and I have a five year old son who happens to have Down Syndrome, and to hear Coach Stallings share his innermost thoughts and feelings about a similar situation was very encouraging. The alternating recollections of football and personal family life are interesting and compelling. Coach Stallings' honest and frank feelings about his son, Johnny, make you feel like you are right there with him as he wrestles with the unbelievable news that his son has Down Syndrome. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is excellent reading.
Rating: Summary: It made me laugh, it made me cry. Review: As a parent of a young boy with Down Syndrome I very much enjoyed this book and recomend it to any new parent. It made me laugh, it made me cry and it opened my eyes to see how far the world has come with accepting people with disabilities. And just to know that there are parents before me who struggled with their child just as I struggle with mine and they too learned to live in a whole new world. And celebrated every little accomplishment just as we do with our son.
Rating: Summary: A coach's tale of winning off the field Review: As a reporter for the Associated Press I had written a number of articles focusing on families who were raising children with disabilites. It soon became apparent to me how much these families needed good schools and nonjudgemental support from teachers, friends and family members. Many families were looking for strong role models and advocates for their children. Then, in August 1993, I met Alabama football coach, Gene Stallings, his wife,Ruth Ann and their son, John Mark. Right away I knew that the Stallings' story of love and courage would speak to people across the country. Traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama I learned that football was almost a religion in that part of the world. A stroll down Bear Bryant Blvd in Tuscaloosa revealed The Bear Bryant Museum, a monument to the sport, displaying every kind of football memorabilia dating back to the late 1800's. Walking a few blocks up the street I came to another monument. This one was a state-of-the-art facility, the Stallings Center, where children with various physical disabilities receive free care. Incredibly, seventy-five per cent of them are mainstreamed by first grade. This center exists and thrives because of the dedication and devotion of Gene Stallings and his family. Another Season explores the relationship of the coach and his son beginning when John Mark was born in 1962 and the doctor told the parents they had a "mongoloid baby." The highs and lows of the football life are combined with the highs and lows of raising a child with a disability. Readers will soon see just how far we as a society have come to embracing children with disabilities, yet how far we still have to go.
Rating: Summary: A simple book that is enjoyable. Review: Coach Stallings does not pull any punches. He writes of raising his son who has down syndrome with an honesty not seen often.
Rating: Summary: A football coach's life story, about much more than football Review: Gene Stallings had great success coaching football, and this autobiography covers the highlights, explains the problems, and has enough 'inside' information to satisfy a reader wanting that part of the story. But the real focus is on his son John who has Down syndrome and on the other members of the family and their friends and how they interact with John and what he comes to mean for them. Even the parts about football teams and their seasons bring in John. Gene Stallings is modest about his accomplishments and tells candidly about his failures. This book held my attention throughout.
Rating: Summary: Touching, heartfelt, will reach the soul of all who read Review: Gene Stallings is a man's man. A father's father. He was, and still is, a great coach, husband, and teacher. Yet he has a tender compassion not always seen in men of his calling. He owes much of that part of him to his son and he knows it. He has taken the sorrow and pain his family bore and turned it into an story of amazing hard work, courage, and love. This book should be one of the first things read by a couple faced with the reality of a Down Syndrome baby. Coach Stallings shows us there is life after DS, and it can be very good, indeed,it can be wonderful.
Rating: Summary: A real-life story about football Review: Gene Stallings, football coach. I hesitated to purchase a book in which an athletic man recounts life with his disabled son. I am not a football fan, nor did I in the past think very highly of the "jocks" of the world. Coach Stallings changed my views by the end of the first chapter. He is all too human. A man who wanted a son to grow up and carry on the family name and football prowess. We see openly his disappointment and fears after Johnny's birth. The child will never play football and may be looked down upon his entire life. Stallings strives for coaching fame all the while advocating for the best for his son. His pride in the adult Johnny is one of the great tear jerking moments of modern literature.
