Summary: "Rascal" and "Rascal, der Waschbär"
Review: This is a lovely book about a boy and his pet raccoon which does not lose anything in the translation into German as far as I am concerned. I think that this book, along with his later book "Raccoons Are The Brightest People" as well as "Frosty: A Raccoon To Remember" by Harriet E. Weaver, and "Raccoons, A Natural History" by Samuel I. Zevelhoff are the big four books about the wonderful critters.

Summary: Rascal
Review: This is a story about a boy with a pet raccoon. His mother has passed away and his dad lets him have all kinds of pets and even build a canoe in the living room. Rascal is a racoon living a happy life with his family, until Sterling catches him, then it gets happier. He went everywhere with Sterling. Seeing new sights, smelling new smells, it's all a daily routine, until it is messed with by other people who weren't so fond of him. He was caged, and put on a leash. That is no life for a racoon. Sterling decides to let Rascal decide, eternal freedom, or life with Sterling? This was a refreshing change to read after "Where the Red Fern Grows" which is about a boy
whose passion is killing raccoons. There aren't many books out there for older boys that don't concentrate on violence. This is one.

Summary: The second-best book I've ever read
Review: This is my second favorite book of all time (my favorite is Red Planet by Robert A. heinlein). I have loved raccoons since I first saw Pocahontas, and I'll bet everyone fell in love with Meeko!:) Anyway, I think that raccoons, besides being irresistibly cute and cuddly, are very smart. Does anyone know if they have opposable thumbs?? Anyhow, perhaps the funniest part of this book was when Rascal was washing his sugar lump and it disappeared. I laugh so hard just thinkin' about that! I also cry at the touching parts, and I'm gonna write a novel or a novella about raccoons that will be inspired by this wonderful book. I have an old 1963 hardcover copy of this book that supposedly my late grandmother had bought; my mother found it in one of the rooms at grandmother's old house. I keep it in good condition, too. I wonder if you can teach a raccoon to talk?

Summary: A Furry, Thirteen-pound Centerpeice!
Review: This Newbery honor book is a gentle charmer for children of all ages, especially those who love the woods or have ever tried to tame a wild animal. Recounted in the first person by the one who lived these events in a more naive era, RASCAL is the story of an 11-year-old boy who raises an orphaned baby raccoon. Set during American's involvement in the Great War, the book includes many historical aspects of that special era. It reminds us how war in distant Europe touched even heartland America, makling it an excellent book to include in a Unit on WW2.

Young Sterling is a resourceful boy whose father permits him an incredible amount of freedom--trusting him with a menagerie of semi-tamed animals--even leaving him on his own for days at a time. We are endeared to this unlikely duo by the love, concern and creativity which the boy displays during their year of special friendship. His pet easily learns to bridge the two-footed and four-pawed worlds; we chuckle and fret, delight and worry as the raccoon gets older and into more serious mischief. Rascal seems to bring out either the best or the worst of human nature! It is amazing how much both boy and raccoon mature in just one year. A truly delightful little gem!

Summary: Rascal
Review: This story is about an 11 year old boy and his pet raccon.
The main characters of this book are Sterling North and Rascal.
The book starts out when Sterling found Rascal. They had good times. Rascal loved shiney things and he had to get a collar.
When Sterling went back to school he took Rascal with him but he had to leave Rascal outside. I give this book five stars. If you like adventure you will like this book.

Summary: This book warmed my heart
Review: When I read this book as a child I was touched by the way North described every detail and the book played clearly in my mind as if it were a movie. I read it to my children now and they too love it. I think that this is a wonderful book that all young people should read.

Summary: A HEARTWARMING STORY AND READING
Review: With the publication of this title a full of fun, endearing young raccoon named "Rascal" takes his place among the other beloved animals in children's fiction, such as Bambi, Lassie, et al. For youngsters and often for adults, as well, there is nothing more attractive than an animal story.

Storyteller and voice artist Jim Weiss gives a sympathetic and engaging reading to this delightful story of the affection between a boy and his raccoon.

Sterling is an 11-year-old boy who recently lost his mother. One day he comes across a small raccoon hiding in an old tree stump in the woods. The boy takes the animal home, names him "Rascal" and quickly but surprisingly integrates him into the family - a father who forgets a lot, four skunks, woodchucks, and a crow named, of course, Poe. It's an extremely unusual household with a yet to be completed 18 foot canoe in the living room.

"Rascal" becomes Sterling's best friend and constant companion; they eat together, sleep together, and go to school together. It is a happy year for boy and his animal until spring arrives and brings with it some changes.

This is a simple yet heartwarming story, a return, if you will, to simpler times. What a joy that is even if only in our imaginations.
