Rating: Summary: Rascal Book Review Review: Rascal By: Sterling North Reviewed by: N. Peng Period: P.1 Rascal is a book about a young boy and his pet raccoon. It tells about true friendship. The main character, eleven-year-old Sterling North, and his mischievious companion, Rascal, do everything together. That is until Rascal starts causing trouble for the neighbors. Everybody wants him caged and Sterling has to make a difficult choice- either to cage his friend of let him run free. I liked this book because of its great description. I was able to see what was happening very clearly. "...an entire ocean stretching as far beyond the horizon, as though a sapphire half as big as the visible sky..." makes me feel as if i were seeing this beautiful site as well. Another reason why I enjoyed reading this book was because of its houmorous events, such as the pie eating contest. "He leaped to the table and started helping me eat my pie, licking it up at a wonderful rate." i would never expect to see that happen any day. My favorite part of the book was when Sterling, his father, and Rascal were trying to sleep in navy hammocks. They tried and tried but as they hopped onto the hammock, it flipped over. of course they finally succeded.this moment reminds me of my experiences. Sleeping in hammocks are not as easy as it sounds.
Rating: Summary: Rascal book review Review: Sterling North vividly depicts the adventures, both physically and emotionally, of a boy named Sterling and his pet raccoon. This is a perfectly written book, containing many themes that you can relate to. Read through this book and you will be able to imagine his house perfectly. A menagerie of dogs, crows, skunks, and of course Rascal. The living room with the unfinished canoe and the chicken wired Christmas tree.Having lost his mother at the age of seven, Sterling is a very independent boy who one day finds a baby raccoon, and decides to call him Rascal. As they both grow, their bond becomes strong along with their numerous activities and adventures. No one couldn’t help but laughing when Rascal, who always washes his food before eating, discovers the sugar cubes. He tries to clean them but they just dissolve! In this unforgettable book, Sterling North manages to capture you and take you to a timeless place of life. Rascal is an easy, although deep book, and I strongly recommend it to everyone.
Rating: Summary: An excellent children's book Review: The book is about a young boy growing up in the Midwest at the close of the 1st world war. The boy is left to his own devices to entertain himself because his mother is dead and his father is away on business quite often. He befriends a small racoon and raises it to adulthood. Sterling North recounts many episodes of adventure with Rascal, from canoeing to feeding. I first read this book as a child 30 years ago and my 9 year old son just finished reading it. He could not put it down. This is a first class book for children of all ages.
Rating: Summary: A Good Book Any Time Review: The book Rascal is set in Wisconsin. The main characters are Sterling and Rascal. Sterling finds Rascal as a baby in the forest and he gets to keep him. Rascal is a racoon. As they grow up together they do lots of stuff like win a pie eating contest and build a canoe. They also go fishing and camping together. I don't want to spoil the ending but you should read it your self and find out. If you like books about adventure and friendship this one is for you. It is a great book to read anytime!
Rating: Summary: Rascal Book Good - Rascal Movie So-So Review: The book Rascal was good, but the 1969-1970 Disney movie that it was made from was so-so, noticeably neutered by not referring to the Great War (World War I) that was going on when the story was taking place. If the producers had desired, anti-war parallels could have been drawn between World War I and the Vietnam War. Talk about lost opportunities!
Rating: Summary: WORST BOOK I'VE READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFE Review: The only reason "Rascal" got wonderful reviews was it was one of those old-country, drinkin' lemonade on the wooden back porch, wives cookin' all day to make supper, men tillin' the feilds all day summmer and spring to make 50 dollars, boys plowin' feilds to help the family instead of going to school, girl learnin' how to cook supper for the men type of books. It was completely dull. I gave up on it after 60 pages! You may think I am ignorant in a sense that I do not appreciate fine litterature, but I am very fond of E.B White, Oliver Butterworth ect. I consumeme much time reading. It is a horrid book. I wish I could give it 0 stars!
Rating: Summary: Good Book! Review: This book was quite good and there were some really neat things that Sterling did with Rascal. I love animals, any kind rather then spiders (what am I saying, those aren't even animals!), so I thought it was really cool that in this book a racoon and a boy were best friends and could almost communicate. I really would rate this a 3.5 but that wasn't listed. But, I would have rated this book 4 stars if it hadn't ended so sadly! I mean, we have this cute story about a boy and his racoon's friendship and its looking like everything is going to be great, until at the end it gets all sad! Other than that I reccomend that if you are feeling like a little readin' on the ol' couch, just pick up this here book! (Like my accent?) The only thing I'm wondering about is.... is this based on a true story? If you know, anyone, you're welcome to e-mail me at: biljabong@aol.com
Rating: Summary: "Rascal" and "Rascal, der Waschb?r" Review: This is a lovely book about a boy and his pet raccoon which does not lose anything in the translation into German as far as I am concerned. I think that this book, along with his later book "Raccoons Are The Brightest People" as well as "Frosty: A Raccoon To Remember" by Harriet E. Weaver, and "Raccoons, A Natural History" by Samuel I. Zevelhoff are the big four books about the wonderful critters.
