Rating: Summary: Superb account Review: I was a part of the same sorority as the girls Bundy killed in Florida. When this book was originally released in the early 80s, everyone in my sorority read it. At the time, this was the only book that had ever included interviews with Bundy, then on death row and still proclaiming his innocence, but he 'theorized' what the 'real killer might have done.' Of course, no one could have known the details he theorized but the real killer...it was truly creepy. This is the book they made the TV movie on staring Mark Harmon: 'The Perfect Stranger.' It was only after this book and Bundy's subsequent lack of appeals on Death Row, that he began to confess and was eventually executed.
Rating: Summary: Very close to what might have happened. Great read!! Review: Ive read many books about Ted, and this is one of the best. Second only to "Hunt for the green river killer" This books theories seem to be pretty close to what might have happened.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, Comprehensive Study of Ted Bundy Review: Michaud & Ainsworth's story of Ted Bundy is well written and comprehensive. The conclusions I myself drew from the study were that Ted Bundy's mother was not the cause of his so-called socipathic behavior. She apparently was a very good, loving and responsible mother. The fact that his birth father was "unknown" was undoubtedly significant. The fact that Ted's maternal grandmother, Eleanor Cowell, had been hospitalized for "psychotic depression" suggests a biological cause of what Dr. Dorothy Lewis's diagnosis of an underlying bipolar disorder. Ted's own account that a second grade teacher, Miss Geri, may have been significant. Ted described her as a Catholic having the "menaching attitude of a cannon ball" and as being "prejudiced" against Ted because he was protestant, who once cracked a ruler over his fingers because he had participated in a school ground scuffled with another lad. A UCLA psychiatrist, Dr. Louis West, observed that "somewhere in that man's boyhood, a woman beat him with a stick." Ted himself had only one date in high school. Sex baffled him. However, he listened to the many tales his school buddies told about their own sexual exploits with girls, which was how he learned about sex. Nevertheless, Ted was selected to be vice president of his Methodist Church Youth Group during high school, and he ultimately got a college degree in psychology. The authors state that alcohol was an important trigger in Ted Bundy's behavior. On every occasion he engaged in such behavior (the pursuit and assault of women) he was intoxicated. When he drank his inhibitions were significantly diminished, and his sensitive dominant personality was sedated, to the point that he reacted as a pit bull. When an individual has been subjected to corporeal punishment as a child, the forebrain is somwhat shut down, and the alcohol totally shuts down the forebrain, so that the individual's responses are more like a pit bull. Once again, I find The Only Living Witness to be a very well written and comprehensive study of Ted Bundy and an excellent text book for criminologists.
Rating: Summary: Michaud & Aynesworth nailed Ted Bundy Review: My copy of "Living Witness" is just beaten to death from me dragging it around all these years - it is always a great read, with new revelations every time. I've known Hugh Anyesworth for years - when I ran into him and Steve Michaud at a gathering, I asked them to sign my book and they roared at it's condition. Being a real "Bundyphile", I wanted to correct something mentioned in one of the customer reviews. The TV Movie about Bundy, "Deliberate Stranger", was not taken from this book. It was adapted from Richard Larsen's "Deliberate Stranger", a much earlier book now out of print. With the popularity of Hannibal Lectar, et. al., I think it's time we had a real motion picture and this would be a great source - and wouldn't Michael Keaton be perfect as Ted Bundy (see his work in "Pacific Heights"). The most amazing thing about this book, how could Michaud and Aynesworth sit across from this monster and not completely lose it. Amazing!

Rating: Summary: how demonic can one man get Review: ted bundy was an eavil man of the first order next to gacy and dahmer hes it but to glorify him like all other media types is just as disgusting and thats what this book doseint do instead it shows him for what he really is a lier and a cowerd who dicides to hide behind the 3rd person instead admitting his crimes like a man. and the greif and angrush he put apon the victims famlies is of course down right depressing and i feel the soriest for them to thank this punk felt he had the right to do what he did is just unthinkable and shameful
Rating: Summary: Bundy as Nobody Ever Saw Him Review: Ted Bundy was such a chameleon that few really knew him. This book delves into his mind and heart -- with deft interviewing and superb writing, it is the absolute text to help understand serial murderers. The authors did not try to capitalize on the gore that today's society finds so appealing, but bored in on that which showed how this man was molded into the animal he became. I recall one woman author (and alleged good friend of Bundy) who tried to psychoanalyze him though she had seen him only once in person the last 15 years of his life. She even admitted that on that one occasion she was afraid to ask him if he was guilty! None of that superficial clap trap in this book. Should have six stars!
Rating: Summary: An amazing true tale Review: The good news is...you will never forget this story, and the bad news is...you will never forget this story. An astonishing study of a real life "wolf" a monster. I'm a little embarassed that I'm closely related to a well known criminologist (sociologist) who doesnt believe in the death penlty (and has written many books on the subject). This book will convince you that serial killers should fry and I believe that I could have personally pulled the switch Ted Bundy after reading this story. I read this book nearly 18 years ago and although I forget lots of books I've read, but there hasn't been a time when I washed my car that I havent thought back to this book (you'll find out why when You read it). It will haunt you forever..I highly recommend it to all and I will have my own children read it someday so they will understand that one can never be too careful. I came away from this story feeling a very deep sorrow for the victims and their families. The author will take you to a dark world that few ever experience, and will forever change the way you think, the author (through painstaking interviews) succeeds in writing a book about the Devil himself that will not soon be forgotten.
Rating: Summary: A pure gem and true insight into Ted's mind Review: The problem with Ted Bundy is that when you start to think you know everything you have to know about him and his case, then you find out something and realize you don't know a thing. This book gives you the opportunity to take a few steps in the direction of a better understanding. The book is particulary well written and hats off to the authors for managing those interviews and listening to everything Ted had to say. For when he starts to talk and due to the nature of the things he believes and say aloud, you'd better fasten your seatbelts...My book is in the same condition as the previous' reviewer . For all the Bundyphile Ann rule told me a movie will be made soon out of her book "the stranger beside me".
Rating: Summary: a superb book! Review: There have been a whole slew of books written on Ted Bundy, but this one is the best, trust me.Ted was one of the most savage and evil men to ever walk among us,and this book gives us a chilling view into the mind of a cold-blooded and souless killer, completely devoid of any conscience or humanity.
