Rating: Summary: A mixed bag Review: While I find it compelling it's too anti-Waters and, being me a big Roger fan, this upsets me a little. According to Schaffner, Roger is some kind of egocentric monster whose live gigs are dull, and it's just the opposite. The author lets himself be carried away by the 'kindness' of the three remaining Floyds and this causes him to bash Roger unnecessarily. This part I could do without. As for the history of the band, it's well written besides the points mentioned above. It also features a few great photos.
Rating: Summary: Will the REAL Pink Floyd please stand up? Review: While it was important for Schaffner to reference the relationship--and ultimate demise--of Syd Barrett to Pink Floyd, I couldn't wait to get past the first 124 pages of Barrett's tiresome wanderings between London and Cambridge. Being a fan of David Gilmour in particular, and having a distaste for the wearisome lyrics, imagery and music (?) of Roger Waters, I read the account from Gilmour's perspective and was not disappointed. Truly, this band comingled with just about *everybody* of the counter-culture period. Being a Floyd fan since "Saucerful" in '68, there are many surprises for this student of a long-lost era. The only thing missing from the book is a definitive list of musical references as a useful appendix. For example, the book turned me on to (the electronic pioneers) Ussachevsky and Stockhausen, causing me to download some of their stuff in MP3 format to investigate. There are many more cross-references like this, though, so a complete compendium would have been nice for a thorough study of Floydian influences and subsequent derivatives. For the new reader, keep a highlighter handy!
Rating: Summary: exellent history of the floyd odessy Review: Wow! What a great book, very accurate and concise. Tells about the floyd odessy from start to finish. A very interesting and compelling story. Of the few books i've read lately this one was by far the best!
