Summary: Excellent
Review: This book is the definitive biography of Pink Floyd and no fan of the band should be without it. Shaffer brilliantly weaves together the Pink FLoyd saga from Cambridge roots to psychedelic London to international acclaim and leaves nothing out. Where a lesser author (and fan) would have been frustrated by the band members' isolation or the spotty early history, Shaffner presses on. He includes interviews with Barrett and the rest of the Floyds, documentation of the early gigs, recollections of former managers and roadies, and in depth looks at all of the Floyd's albums and recoding sessions. To boot there is a catalog of all the Floyd band and solo efforts so you can track the band's discography. There is no bias toward the pre- or post- Syd era, just a thorough (and thoroughly enjoyable) recounting of the 30 year Pink Floyd odyssey.

Summary: Outstanding, A complete literary guide to Pink Floyd.
Review: This book really opened my eyes and it will open yours too. A must for the true Floyd fan. This book beautifully illustrates all of the highs and lows of the greatest rock and roll band ever past, present, and future. Nicholas Schaffner does an excellent job of interviewing and illustrating the professional and personal lives of these extraordinary musicians from the "The Pink Floyd" era with Syd Barrett, to the Pink Floyd of today. Wonderfully formatted, and easy to read and understand with numerous surprises. I guarantee you will never listen to their music the same way again. Mr. Schaffner "Wish You Were Here" to write another masterpiece. R.I.P

Summary: Best of Floyd's history
Review: This is absolutely the best, most clearly written book on Pink Floyd. It has a TON of interesting things that even I, a worshipped of Floyd practically, did not know. It is easy to read and VERY interesting. If you like music and want to know more about the very BEST of what music has to offer (Pink Floyd), READ THIS BOOK!

Summary: Secrets revealed
Review: Though the bad blood between Roger Waters and David Gilmour is no big secret, here we start to understand how it and the biggest band in "psychodelic" music came about. From its "crazy" founder Syd Barrett to the Roger Water's "The Wall" concert in Berlin, Schaffner shows how egos and talent built and tore apart this band.

"Saucerful.." seems a bit one sided at times. Waters is almost always depicted as a need-to-be-in-charge egomanic, and despite being kicked out of the band some 25 odd years ago, Barrett's story takes up almost half of the book. This doesn't however take away from the information that's presented here. All of the thoughts, feelings, and goings-on that were present during the making of "Dark Side...", "Atom Heart Mother", "Animals", "The Wall", and all the other great Floyd albums are well described here.

This book is a must read for any Floyd fan to see how it all became to be.

Summary: Excellent, insightful history of early Floyd.
Review: Volumes have been written about the band Pink Floyd, but usually very little is said about their early years with Syd. Some would argue that this book devotes too much time to these early years, focusing as it does on the band's developmental stages and early history. However, Schaffner's work leaves one with a sense that it was these formative years that truly shaped the band, and started them down the path to what they would become 30 years later.

I found it fascinating to read about the events and settings that helped shape the young Pink Floyd. Even the casual Floyd fan should enjoy this book, as Nicholas Schaffner has a style that truly holds the reader's interest.

Summary: Ugh! Just Terrible!
Review: What in the world was Nicholas Schaffner trying to accomplish? On every page he puts down either Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Rick Wright or Nick Mason. Every album they put out, it seems, is a bore, and all of the songs on those albums are uninspired. He says through basically the whole book that none of the musicians are natural musicians, in fact, Shaffner almost seems resentful of Floyds succesfulness. A terrible book, stay away.
