Rating: Summary: mindless occasional laugh Review: It reads like stories swapped in a bar with your girlfriends, and I think that's the intention. This book was amusing enough for me to keep going, but not a gut-buster. Notaro's revelations are pretty obvious, some of the laughs are forced, and she's tiresome when she rants about how pathetic she is.
She has some good moments, like when she takes revenge on a guy who stood her up, or when she recommends Norplant to the white-trash girls up the street, and I liked her attitude to her high school reunion. Not everyone can walk into that classically neuroses-making situation with a truly "the hell with it" attitude.
It isn't deep, but it never pretends to be. Maybe I'm a bit out of the age range for this book...I'll try her latest book and see if I relate better.
Rating: Summary: Super funny Review: Laurie Notaro is one super funny lady. Only thing that concerned me was that there was a real alcohol addiction hidden between the lines that was being blown off. Aside from that concern, this is a fun, light read.
Rating: Summary: Keep waiting for her to grow up a little... Review: I read the entire Notaro series which was ok reading during my daily commute, jury duty, and a delayed flight. I was always left with the feeling of "eh" after reading each story. I was expecting more "ah-ha" and "me too" moments which really didn't come. I get being broke and drunk on ocassion during college and in my early twenties...eventually people grow up (not to say that you still can't have toys on your desk at 30, but you mature in other ways). She just doesn't seem to. I see there is another book coming in May. I don't think I could do it again. Maybe next time I'm summoned for jury duty. This book actually makes me a little leery of other blog-to-novel writers.
Rating: Summary: A giggle fest Review: What a refreshing break out book. I read some of these antictodes with both a younger cousin and my mom, and we both laughed our heads off. I kept giggling about some of these stories long after I read them! Great work!
Rating: Summary: LOL Funny Review: It's a rare treasure to stumble across an author who makes me laugh out loud, but Notaro does that and more! TIGAAC and Notaro's slightly left-of-center world view was a refreshing treat!! I guarentee, I'll never look at a public restroom the same, and I'll always be sure I wear hole-less tights to the doctor's!
Rating: Summary: So funny I almost peed my pants!!!! Review: Like Laurie, I am part of a group of four women who are astonishing, idiotic, gorgeous, crazy and ultimately loving. This book, rather a collection of short pieces, made me laugh harder and louder than "Ya Yas" and all the other Ophrah books combined. My husband had to ask me if I was okay because I was laughing so hysterically that I wasn't able to breathe!
Laurie feels like my long lost twin and her writing style is brief, to the point, descriptive and shockingly on the mark. She admits that while her often drunken state and choice of jobs leaves something to be desired, it's better to be "that girl" than be the "popular girl" at her 10th reunion trying to mask the mess her life really is. How true is that?
Buy it and give it to someone you want to see laugh. A LOT.
And also bring along a fifth of Jack Daniels and some friends.
Take it to a book club near you. The ladies will be peeing their pants.
Rating: Summary: Totally Hillarious Review: This books is just too funny. One hillarious story after another. It's a great companion for any long trip since the chapters are more like individual shorts stories and not completely interrelated to one another. Would make a great gift for you best girl friend.
Rating: Summary: Great if you read at a 5th grade level! Review: I bought this book with great anticipation after reading the glowing reviews. I though it sounded like something I could relate to, stories that could have happened to me... only funnier. However, I was extremely dissapointed. Notaro is a juvenile writer, a poor story teller and her idea of funny might amuse a 5th grader or an 80 year old, but no one in between. I read about 3/4's of the book and can honestly say I didn't even crack a smile. I will be selling this on ebay as soon as I'm finished reviewing it. I do not recommend this read, stick to Sedaris if you want funny.
Rating: Summary: Some funny parts. Review: I thought it was overkill, but there were some laugh out loud parts. Good book overall, but not great.
Rating: Summary: people stared at me because i was laughing so hard Review: i picked this book up last month and read it in a day. so dang funny. i read it on the train and i was laughing so hard that people were staring at me. to put it simply, just read this book and you will be amused. highly amused. laurie notaro is a gem!!!
