Rating: Summary: Ebert's womyn rival....TWO THUMBS WAY UP!! Review: I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. This book touched me inside. Our childhood's paralleled each others. I found myself shaking my head in understanding as I read. I grew up also in a family devoid of feelings. It amazes me that she and I are the same age and yet followed two different paths. I loved her drive as she was not going to let anything stop her. She knew what she wanted and she was bound and determined to get it. At times I found myself envying Melissa's journey into self. Wishing I had had the same fortitude she had. She is a strong independent womyn. Recently I went to my first lesbian meeting. I sat in that parking lot, frozen...not able to move. Then I remembered something I had just read in Melissa's book. She wrote that when she went to Los Angeles. She knew no one, she would go to the lesbian bars alone. I used her strength to find my own. I went to that meeting and no longer felt alone. Her story affected me and that is what a good book does.
Rating: Summary: Wow, honesty at its best... Review: I loved the book and the chance to understand the meaning behind the words to her songs. The book seemed to go thru her life pretty quickly. Im glad she wrote it, now I understand much more about her. Last night watching her on the Oxygen channel and listening to her music for the first time since reading her book it all made sence to me what she has been saying for so long. Alot of us have been interpreting her music in our own way but to know what she is and has really said was special. Thank you Melissa for writing it.
Rating: Summary: Melissa Fan or Not, an interesting read. Review: Being a HUGE Melissa fan myself, it was a given that I would get this the minute it came out. But even aside from that, I loved the book. It gave a very intimate view into Melissa's art and the world of music, and the way she has dealt with the various trials in her life. I admire her greatly, not only for her music, but for her candor and committment. I highly recommend this book! Love you Mellissa!
Rating: Summary: Slightly Interesting, Not Deeply Revealing Review: Ms. Etheridge is a songwriter and a rock star -- not a Pulitzer winning author. That's OK with me. I was expecting deeper revelations and more "dish" on her earlier days. On the other hand, how much is enough. It makes sense that much of the book is dedicated to her long-term relationship with Julie Cypher. The breakup is what was going on when the book was being written. If she'd glossed over it, she would have been criticized for it. The depth of Melissa's pain from Julie's betrayal is obvious; who among us would not smarting? The review from "A Reader in the US" takes great pleasure in slamming Melissa for airing her dirty laundry over the breakup and states he/she won't listen to Melissa's music because of the book. Whatever. Don't let these comments sway you. If you're a fan of Melissa's and want to hear her side of the story, buy the book.
Rating: Summary: THIS WOMAN ROCKS Review: First time I saw Melissa Etheridge was on the 90's late night talk show"ARSENIO HALL".All i kept saying to myself is that this woman can rock. She had the equivalency and energy that of Springsteen and Joplin. Her songs make you feel what she's lied through and possibly you have too. This book, like her songs, paints that portrait of the girl from Kansas to the recording industry icon and a role model for all women and men too.SHE'S A SURVIVOR.You gotta love her and this great book that chapters by titles of her songs.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ Review: Great book! It was beautifully written. Melissa does a great job taking the reader through her painful path of emotional turmoil. It is a deep and intense journey, those who can relate to emotional upheaval will only appreciate it that much more. I was a just a music fan before I read the book, now I am a avid fan of not only her music, but the person she is.
Rating: Summary: Reality check Review: I'm a loyal fan of Melissa's and have been for several years. I enjoyed her book very much, however she failed to 'get to the heart of the matter and dig deep' like she promised she would in the beginning of her book. Throughout her book Melissa generalises on her life, never digging deep into her soul and her emotions to convey what she was actually feeling and whether or not she confronted her sister and/or her mother in any way to find out why they acted the way they did. She never mentioned what her sister was truly after, nor did she say what their relationship is really like now, although the reader finds out that there is somewhat of a distance between them. Melissa never seemed to find out why her mother was so distant and cold...as if she regretted having children in the first place. Regarding her and Julie's relationship, here again Melissa skims the surface. However I feel that the crux of their explosive and highly complicated relationship should be kept between the two of them. What Melissa did reveal to us was enough for the reader to know. Overall, I feel that the book was an exciting read and it opened up Melissa's world a tad...coming away with the forethought 'shying away from the truth and the failure to be allowed to display ones emotions can be quite deprimental to ones soul'.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book!!!! Review: Etheridge hits a nerve for modern American military historians. Her account of the US Army's experiments with guided missle research is right on the mark. More time should be spent on research into food production and less on building destruction. She spends almost 200 pages setting up an excellent agenda for future US arms developments in the 21st Century, then uses the present data to state the case that we have RIGHT NOW the technology to carry it out. Using missles to plow ground for increased food production will be the 'new technological' breakthrough we've been needing. Acres of wasteland will be transformed into rich agricultural land. Good job on the book. Buy it, you'll love it!
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Story of Truth and Courage!!!!!! Review: My admiration of this women has grown after reading this book. I could not put it down!! Every chapter I found hope and strength. A story of someone who believed in herself and has made her dreams come true. Its Inspiring and its real! Cheers to Melissa for having the courage to tell her story. Everyone can appricate the words and also the music!
Rating: Summary: She earned myr respect Review: Overwhelmingly honest and truthful. Bravo! For me, the newly gained knowledge about her life also explains why -- after "Your Little Secret" -- her music has changed from unique, poetic rock & roll to mediocre pop/rock. A must-read not only for fans. This book opens a special place in ourselves and reveals the truth in all of us.
