Rating: Summary: Boring Review: After reading the other two bio's on melissa, I couldn't wait for her to write her own. I was very disappointed. When mentioning her band she completely leaves out Dave Beyer. Talk about a slap in a the face for him. I thought she would have a least put in more stories of being on the road instead of rehashing old interviews. Bascially I'm sorry I wasted my money. Don't get me wrong I'm a major Melissa fan. I just thought the book [stunk].
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment Review: I had been looking forward to her autobiography so much. I am a HUGE fan and have all her albums. But she isn't a very good author, I must say. The book is really badly written. And although there is a co-author credited, the book isn't even organized properly, resulting in MLE contradicting herself all the time. She says one thing on this page and the opposite on the next, and the reader is left alone with his/her bewilderment. The book was obviously written in a hurry and maybe to make a few bucks, but definately not to deliver an insightful account into her life and work. As far as the content is concerned, most of the space is taken up by MLE blaming her ex-girlfriend Julie Cypher for the breakdown of their relationship. We also leran that MLE had spend the years before she met Julie having one night stand after another with any woman who approached her. Overall, what I learned was that she has a lot of personal issues she has yet to overcome, that she uses poor judgement, that she has no shame and that she is a hypocrite. She keeps insisting she was telling the TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH but those phrases are empty and aren't filled with meaning. The reader gets little insight into her life, other than that she uses very poor judgement.
Rating: Summary: You MUST read this book! Review: If you are an ME fan, you MUST read this book. It is written from her soul. It is her truth. It is a very real, from the gut, honest story. She doesn't hold back. I laughed and cried right along with her. She actually made me "feel" what she is feeling.
Rating: Summary: Honesty Review: While this book is not particularly complex reading. It is honest. Melissa is upfront in stating that this is her perspective of the events. I believe we all experience life through our own filters whether we own that or not is a different question. I would encourage someone to read the book not only as an interest in this musican but as a perspective on choices we make, struggles we face and cultural bias we each deal with in our own way. This is how Melissa confronted her choices and describes her decision making. The book communicates Melissa as very human- making tough choices and growing up along the way. Here are the bumps and bruises we all can related to.
Rating: Summary: Impressive Reading !! Review: This is a great book to read if you are interested in the details of what it takes to follow your dreams, and the price that is paid when you do so. Melissa Etheridge has spoken candidly and truthfully about her life in love and in music, and it is ironic that once you read the book, the lyrics to her songs make even more sense than ever before. It is a tribute to a person who has been able to make her dreams come true, but not always found the happiness people crave when they do. I loved the book, and could not put it down until I was finished. If you are a true Melissa Etheridge fan, this is a must read.
Rating: Summary: Music Directs Melissa in Love Therapy and sucess.. Review: I want to start with I LOVED reading this book. Music Heals Melissa And I am touched and Thankful for Melissa Etheridge! Rock on!! Health, love and happiness to all!!
Rating: Summary: An open Book Review: I have followed Melissa's career from the beginning. I have seen her in concert over a dozen times. I thought I knew all I needed to about her, but I was wrong. This book is like reading a diary, very open and honest. I enjoyed the stories about the songs I have been listening to for so long. I listen to her older albums now with a new understanding. I think Melissa is a great role model for the gay community as well as a very important rock performer. Oh, one more thing, her new CD skin is amazing!
Rating: Summary: Not Sure What To Think Review: I start out by saying that I have been a Melissa Etheridge fan for some time. This book, while informative as to where the songs come from, leaves me at a loss for something. Her music and lyrics are powerful and you see where that power eminates from. But the book also seemed vindictive, not just to former lovers, but everyone in her life. I also thought the book was sketchy at times, vague in areas where establishing a background would have helped better understand her personal feelings towards those around her. I also struggle with the fact that she decided to have children while her relationship, never minding whether hetero or homosexual, was on very rocky ground. But hey, that seems to be todays world. Definately a read for a fan, but maybe the book could have used more truth and reflection and less tabloid reporting of promiscuity.
Rating: Summary: Truth is relative Review: In reading Melissa's story, I realized how each of our lives unfold in a similar fashion. Perhaps without as much publicity, but certainly just as intertwined with others. By disclosing each (not so) 'little secret', one after another, and relating the stories of her songs, I felt empathy for all that she has experienced, and all that is to come.I encourage others to read this book for its simplicity and directness. I am a lyric-listener as well as a music lover. The book gave more meaning and more relavance to the songs that I have loved for years. Enjoy. I certainly did.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful window Review: This book was carefully crafted to be the 'truth' as well as entertaining. I found myself reading long into the night even after I promised myself I would only read one or two chapters. This book is a wonderful window into the life of a rock star, lesbian, and mother. Everyone can identify with Melissa on some level. For me that is what captivated me the most about the book. I knew exactly where she was coming from in her relationsips with lovers and with parents. This is a must read for everyone!
