Rating: Summary: A good read Review: I originally picked up this book because I wondered what had gone wrong in the Melissa Etheridge/Julie Cypher relationship. The story is interesting and captivating. I don't think any of the details about Melissa's relationships are salacious or gratuitous. The writing style, while simple,is honest and straight-forward. The reader can feel Melissa's heartbreak and devastation at the disintegration of her relationship with Cypher, as well as Melissa's determination to care for their children and find love and happiness once again.
Rating: Summary: Searingly honest...the life behind her songs Review: A refreshingly frank and honest autobiography by Melissa Etheridge. The reader can learn about the life behind her songs; her body of work is auto-biographical on its own, but this book offers a more detailed look. Melissa tells of her past loves and how those women and other people influenced her music. Simply told, this book is an great read for anybody interested in Etheridge's music and the creative force behind it.
Rating: Summary: Yes she is Review: This touched me and humanized her to me she isn't just a voice any longer she is true and warm and hurts and messes up like all of us a must read if you like her. I just think she is the bomb
Rating: Summary: Brave and insightful look at Melissa Etheridge Review: I was on the fence about reading this book. I wasn't sure if it would interest me. I have somewhat enjoyed some of Melissa's music in the past. I was never a die hard fan. I must say that this book was well worth reading. This book gave me a detailed idea of what it was like growing up being Melissa Etheridge. The book also talked about her relationships with others. The book also contains some of her songs and her reasons for writing them. I found this to be very interesting. At times it was slightly painful to read, but definitely well worth it.
Rating: Summary: A very personal, no holds barred poignant 'story' Review: I must be the only person in Singapore aware of this book cos it isn't to be found in any bookstore here. I had to order it from an international bookstore, which took forever! But the wait was well worth it. I have never read an autobiography this real, without all the fluff that usually accompanies the rest - or rather, the hypocrisy. The story about Melissa's life right up to this point in time as she is embarking on a new relationship with someone else she feels will accept her for who she is and fills the deep aching void in her heart rings a chord in me. We are all in search of that, regrdless of our sexual inclinations. Probably this is what gives this book a universal appeal. I wanted to cry so much when she revealed her childhood which sounds exactly like mine - where things always get swept under the rug, and communication about feelings and what's real never take centrestage. Knowing Melissa's frame of mind when she wrote her songs also adds a depth into my understanding - her torture, her pain, her anguish, her longing are all clearly spelt out. I have read the book twice, and intend to go on reading it even though it hurts so - cos she has become a friend, through the pages. After reading about how she performs with passion and gives it all she's got makes me more determined to catch her concert, wherever it may be. Seriously doubt if Melissa will fly to Singapore cos alot here are a homophobic crowd ..... but no matter - its an excellent book that's raw, heartfelt and very very real.
Rating: Summary: ME ME ME ME ME! Review: Does anyone else think it's funny that Melissa Etheridge's initials are M.E.? And after reading this book, I can't think of any more fitting....
Rating: Summary: The master in her own words. Review: As soon as I heard this book was to be released I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Coming from a small town in rural Australia I had to order it into store so the wait was longer than expected but the book was definately worth the wait, even if it was a very short read. Melissa's strong voice & poingnant lyrics helped me survive the 90's. They made me cry, they made me hurt & they made me stronger. I believe if music can make you feel anything the lyricist or performer is doing something right. Melissa's honesty abouth her life in the book is to be commended although I felt she was still holding back something, but who really wants to share the most personal feelings & emotions with the world. Even in an autobiography some things must remain sacred. As a hetrosexual woman I commend Melissa for writing a book which neither promotes homosexuality nor condemns it, she simply shows you that the important things in life are love, family, friends, compassion & music that makes you feel something. Sexuality is personal and your personality makes you who you are. I reccommend this book to anyone who appreciates Melissa Etheridge as the master lyricist & performer that she has proven to be over the past decade.
Rating: Summary: Only the best from Melissa Review: No, no, no. What is with all the bad customer reviews of this book? This book is excellent. I am a huge Melissa Etheridge fan. I am also a dedicated memoir reader. I will admit that as far as style goes she's not the best writer in the world, but who ever said she was? Being a writer and being a lyricist are two different things. Melissa Etheridge is, and always will be, a master lyricist. As for her writing style, it may lack in terms of literary quality, but it is definitely her own style. In fact, I am rather fond of it, as it feels like you're sitting down having a conversation with her (and how cool would that be to have a conversation with Melissa Etheridge?). As for the comments that this book reveals too much . . . well, if you didn't want to know about her life why did you read the book? It is a little bit of "me, me, me" but that's why it's an AUTOBIOGRAPHY. It's supposed to be about her. And as the title indicates ("My Life in LOVE and Music"), the book does talk in some detail about her relationships. However, none of it is in too much detail or is at all graphic, and if you read the entire book you understand that her music and love are connected--they fuel each other (which is the way most great artists are). This book is fascinating and easy to read. Melissa is honest and open with everything she writes about, and that's refreshing to see in a star's autobiography. It is both entertaining and informative to read what it was like from her perspective to do so much for music, lesbians, and women.
Rating: Summary: Oh Puh-lease! Review: I have been a fan of Melissa Etheridge's music since her first album. She used to write from her soul, now she writes from her ego (or lack of it). This book just proves that. I can still drive down the highway belting out her old lyrics at the top of my lungs, but I now think how sad it is that she's a self-deprecating narcissist. It's one of those "me me me" and "what do you think of me" books. I'm just waiting for her to grow up and find her soul again. Then she may win back the rest of her fan base that was with her from the beginning.
Rating: Summary: Way too much information... Review: I have to agree with Howdydudes (below)-- Although I love Melissa Etheridge's music, I don't really need to know all of the personal details of her relationships. The parts of the book that I enjoyed the most were those that explained how she wrote her songs and what they meant, but that could have been done without giving every intimate detail of her therapy sessions. Yes, her personal experiences obviously shaped and inspired her music, but the way that it was presented in the book almost seemed like a ploy to get back at (or back with) Julie. If I were Julie I'd feel so betrayed that the intimate details of my life were put out there like that.....
