Villasenor's account about what his family endured just to get here had me feeling like I was a character watching as everything unfolded. I loved Lupe, Juan and their mothers! I laughed and cried. I have read Rain of Gold 3 times and each time I've read it I've laughed as though I was reading it for the first time. This book has inspired me to intervew my grandparents. Thank you Mr. Villasenor, for recognizing that all of our gente has a Rain of Gold story.

Rating: Summary: One of best I've ever read! Review: I was either laughing or crying throughout this entire book. I was never bored or waiting for the pace of the book to pick up. I felt like I was reading a biography of my own family's migration from Mexico to the US. I'd recommend this to anyone but especially those whose family immigrated from Mexico to the US in the last 100 yrs. You'll have a new respect for the strength, intelligience, and resourcefullness of our Mexican ancestors.
Rating: Summary: Made me laugh, made me cry... Review: When I was reading this book I sat for part of the time in a hotel lobby in Houston. I was alternately laughing and crying, until the concierge came and asked if I was ok. I replied that I was just great. Everyone to whom I have recommended this book has both laughed out loud and cried real tears. Why? Because this book illuminates the soul of the Mexican People, and the soul of humanity, in a way which speaks to the hearts of all of us. Love between people, whether a man and woman or a parent and child, is depicted herein in a way which we all aspire to. The people of Mexico have borne much - the stories in Rain of Gold of the civil war in the 30s describe the horror which the people went through in a way which is difficult for many in the US to understand. The description of the suffering and the dignity of the people in Mexico clarified for me why I have so much respect for la gente de Mexico. Villasenor has done us a great service, and provided a terrific read.

Rating: Summary: I cried. I laughed. I got mad. I got furious. I got happ Review: I became so much closer to the whole Mexican culture and my wife's family after I read this book. I went thru every emotion I have in me, and came up with a few I didn't know were there. The way the mother would do anything it took to protect the family and see that they made it. They way the Americans treated them like less than dirt. But the cleaverness of the family to take advantage of whatever they could to succeed and become so respected in their own town and in life in general. Victor is truely a very gifted man.
Rating: Summary: A true story about two extraordinary "familias" Review: This book has definately been one of the best books I've ever read. I felt like a member of the family, and cried in the sad parts and laughed at the happy parts. Truly a historical book about two families that had to go through many hard times, yet came through it. If you want to read a great book, read Rain Of Gold, or anything by Victor Villasenor, he is a great author.
