Rating: Summary: An excellent novel, from an excellent author Review: If you haven't read this book do so it is the best book I've read in ages
Rating: Summary: A story of sheer human perserverence Review: I am a freshman at a small liberal arts school, and this book was given to me by the school as a common reading experience for the entire entering class. The book presented many facets of life that I have never known, and probably never will; however, this true account of Cedric's life brings to the forefront what is lacking in today's public schools; congruence. But despite the lack of congruence, Cedric, through his own will and determination, found a way to succeed. This book was an amazing eye-opener to me as it presented me with how many different lives people have, and how hard it actually is to melt everyone into one pot. This book; however, shows that it can be done, and it can possibly give hope to people that don't think that they can quite make it.
Rating: Summary: An insightful book for all Review: As an entering college freshman myself, this book provided me with many insights on not only college life, but diversity as well. It helped me to identify my own feelings with those of Cedric, and to understand that these feelings are not just familiar to myself, but to other college freshmen, too. On a more literary note, the book has exceptional technical merit. I praise Suskind for delving so deeply into each character. He obviously put a lot of time and effort into understanding and relaying the feelings and the emotions of all the characters in the book. I strongly urge anyone entering college to read this book. It will help you to see things in a different light not only socially, but personally as well.
Rating: Summary: A very good book with lots of warnings for college freshmen. Review: As an student entering my first year of college, at Albion, this book presented a nice story of Cedric Jennings struggle. The words told as Cedric is in Brown however really told me that I was do for a great change. I'm sure Cedrics great clash of cultures is much larger the mine, and most people, however it does warn that there are changes in store that will not be forseen and that these can all be overcome with the right attitudes. I would suggest that anyone leaving for college might want to read this well written book.
Rating: Summary: A South Africa in America! Review: This book has revealed many concealed events about America to me. I am a South African, and I have lived with many American kids in South Africa, both white and African-American kids. I was always told by my peers on how perfect America was. A hope in the unseen has revealed many secretes to me, through this book I have learned that all countries have similar social problems, except that some are smarter than the others in concealing their shames. After reading this book, I have started to look at America with a different eye. This book is gripping, fascinating and portrays an image to a life of an African-American growing up in the what so-called PERFECT SOCIETY! Well done Cedric, you have managed to escape the vibrant life in the ghetto.
Rating: Summary: An Incredible Story Review: This was easily one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. A well-written, inspirational story of a courageous, driven young man (and his mother) who refused to be held back by his circumstances. Would that all young people in his situation were as focused, brave and driven to succeed as Cedric. This book should be required reading for every student in junior high school. It moved me to tears no less than four times!
Rating: Summary: A courageous, compelling story Review: I found Cedric Jennings an inspiration. The reward of A Hope in the Unseen is to follow someone through their struggles and finally see them make it. Cheers to Cedric and the author Ron Suskind!
Rating: Summary: Required reading for Albion College First Year students. Review: As a common reading experience facilitator I must lead a coterie of eight students in discussion of this book in one month. I am excited to discuss such an exciting text. These students, from various backgrounds (many from private schools), will not have experienced anything like Cedric and this can provide insight into the lives of others. Does anyone know if Cedric graduated? Are there articles or follow up about Cedric detailing what happened after the book was published? I highly recommend this for every first year college student to remind most of the many advantages they have from their high school and home life experiences, as well as to introduce them to the harsh realities of some of their classmates. If you have any information on Cedric, please email me.
Rating: Summary: Young African-American male struggles to achieve Review: Cedric Jennings, a young African-American male, succeeds in overcoming the odds in his quest to escape ghetto life in Washington D.C. and attends an Ivy League university. This is a refreshing profile of an African-American who looks for success through academics rather than sports. Anyone who has ever felt out of place or inadequate can relate to Cedric's struggles as he tries to fit in the Ivy League world. I found it to be very enlightening.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking, but tedious at times. Review: The story of Cedric Jennings overcoming major obstacles was very uplifting and inspirational. However, the story was overwritten. It was bogged down with many insignificant details. I found myself skimming it at times in order to get to the author's point. All in all, a worthwhile read.
