Rating: Summary: Must-read!!!!! Review: I found this book hard to put down. I must say it gives a good mental picture of Henry and his attitude toward his wives. Better yet, it is a great reference for each of his wives, never have I been able to find so much information on all of his wives. I give it a thumbs up and look forward to more writings from the author.
Rating: Summary: Excellent page-turner Review: This is an excellent book that grabs ones interest right from the beginning. I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Superb overall. Some strange opinions, but highly readable Review: Well-written account of Tudor King Henry and his bevy of females. MS Weir proposes some highly questionable interpretations -- such as her conclusion that Henry did not sire Anne Bolyn's sister's "bastard" -- but, in the main, this is a dynamic book and well worth the cost!
Rating: Summary: Excellent, efficient and very well-researched Review: I really loved this book because of its interesting details and impresionant facts. I found it in a bookstore of Houston and I bought it because I really like the Medieval Ages and the age of Kings and Queens. When I read it I was impressed because of the complex society of that epoque, and also Alison Weir did an excellent research and a book of real history, that it is no boring. Because if I would find it boring, I wouldn't continue reading it, but it was very good and efficient. I like so much how Alison writes, that I bought her other books and I am reading them.
Rating: Summary: Extremely engaging and very well-researched. Review: I must admit I bought Alison Weir's The Six Wives of Henry VIII with great trepidation. I had read and liked a very comprehensive six-volume biography by an author whose name I cannot recollect, and was therefore wary of reading another author's work on the same subject. I am glad to admit I was mistaken. The book has been well-researched and is written evocatively enough to keep your interest from flagging. As a history student, I am used to poring over dry, dusty tomes; it was a pleasure to feel history come alive as Ms Weir brought to life one of England's most colourful monarchs. To all those who carp about her background research, I have only this to say: From all the reading I have done, her sources are impeccable. Two, you must realise that Tudor and Elizabethan England was far from being puritan. The life-style of the court and aristocracy was one devoted to the pursuit of pleasure. If I cavil at anything, it is that the author does not elaborate about the political situation prevailing. Henry VIII succeeded in giving England much-needed political stability.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put down this fabulous book on Henry's Wives Review: I've always enjoyed British Royal Family stuff - long before the Princess Di craze, but often forgot what I read just after reading it. This book, however, told the story in an engaging way and the characters were portrayed like actual people!! I'll never forget his 6 wives, nor will my impression of King Henry VIII remain that of a big, fat murderer - Try it - you'll find it hard to put down!
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I fell in love with the horse, and the mistress. Lovely story
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK FOR A STUDY ON ALL 6 WIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: What made Catherine of Aragon so attached to her husband? Did Anne Boleyn really have 6 fingers? And what of Anne of Cleves, the flanders mare? This is the best book I have ever come across that gives a full view of the picks and pans of all his wives, their likes and dislikes, their true natures in castle walls, what makes them tick, and simply...who they were. Alison Weir has written this book like a trashy Danielle Steel and steamy Sandra Brown, all the dirty tasks and hidden info. written in a startlingly captive way, that you won't want to miss out on a page. And the multi-pictures of ALL the wives were just as fantastic as well. This is the best Tudor England book of all.
Rating: Summary: Riveting Review: How often can you pick up a history/biography that you are already familiar with and not be able to put it down? Although I "know how it ends" I found myself caught up in the intrigue as if this the latest fictional novel. Kudos to Alison Weir for writing this easily-accessable well-researched and always fascinating novel. I had already read a scholarly tome detailing Elizabeth I's life and wasn't interested in pursuing the Tudors when I recieved Weir's book as a gift. Now I am a Tudor junkie and can't wait to read more.
Rating: Summary: Just like a Tabloid!!! Review: This is the best book out there on the wives of Henry VIII. Alison Weir is a fabulous nonfictional Tudor writer, inserting the juicy and humerous accounts, and leaving out a bit of the dry. This was just like reading a tabloid!
