Rating: Summary: Thank You Review: Thank you for writing this book - it has helped my daughter feel better about her self image. She is 17 and has had low self esteem for many years. She is starting to trust and believe in herself. She found that the stories helped her understand that she is not by herself in feeling this way. I very strongly recommend this book because it was a huge breakthrough for my daughter and I hope it can be for your children, too.
Rating: Summary: Humm Review: This book comes across more as self promotion and less as self help. This book is full of pointless stories designed to make the author look good and short on real help for girls facing the trauma of having an eating disorder.
Rating: Summary: Helpful for any girl who is hungry in any way. Review: This book has changed a lot of my outlook on life. I highly reccomend this to any woman or girl or someone who has a girl and is struggling with weight, choices, and how to make a difference in the world. From this book I feel I have been given the strength to go out and try new things and know that just because I'm bigger doesn't mean I can't do things that everybody else can. Jessica Weiner is an incredible role model, and I hope to be hearing much more about this amazing woman.
Rating: Summary: A REQUIRED READ Review: This book is more than just about eating disorders. It is about our life issues and our attempts at figuring out who we want to be. Jessica leads by example. As a mother and a teacher, I think this book should be required reading in schools. And I think Jessica should be proud of what she has accomplished. I am so glad she 'wrote it down'.
Rating: Summary: Must-read for young women, college students, activists Review: This book is more than just one woman's memoir. The three parts each bring something special to the overall book. The first part is autobiography, where Jessica Weiner shares her experiences growing up with the all-too-common messages about how she should look. It is written in such a way that readers will be able to relate and empathize. Particularly poignant are her accounts of high school and college. Readers will either be able to relate personally to what she went through, or they need to be aware that women still face these challenges imposed by society--which includes not only the media but also OURSELVES, our own attitudes and behaviors. The second part of the book is perhaps the strongest and most poignant. The author shares how she created a theatre company after graduating from college and traveled the country presenting plays on a variety of important social issues. We witness both the highs and lows of the author's experiences meeting thousands of students from all walks of life. She has, at a relatively young age, influenced the lives of thousands of young people across the country. The third and final part of the book is the "self-help" section, in which the author presents some take-away tools and strategies for readers. This part, like the entire book, is accessible to a wide audience of all ages, and helps end the book centered on empowerment--which is appropriate given the work that Jessica Weiner does. This book is a must read for young women of all ages. College students will find something important in here; student activists will certainly find comfort and inspiration. High school students should also find the book to be accessible and informative. Even parents will find this to be an interesting read. Readers are referred to the author's website and will find that she is doing some really important and amazing work.
Rating: Summary: The ideal gift for your girlfriends Review: This is a one-of-a-kind must read for every young woman. I have given this book as a gift to all of my friends and they each fell in love with the book and its message for different reasons. Jessica Weiner has a groundbreaking and much needed voice. She goes where others have feared to- the heart of self-esteem issues that plague so many women today. From relationships to eating issues and more- Jessica's message inspires and drives people to take action in their lives.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational Review: Very engaging story of a strong young woman. who, after much searching, finds herself and her mission. She is a motivator, a seeker of truth, and someone who does not believe in using band-aids to cover deep wounds. The book is a mixture of memoir and years of creative work helping others. I found the story of her work the most moving part of the book and wish she had written more about herself. This vivid accound of searching for one's own truth should be of great help to many who are struggling with this almost universal problem.
Rating: Summary: Good intentions are overwhelmed by shameless SELF PROMOTION Review: While I do believe that Jessica has some intentions of helping people and doing good in the world, it is more believable her motivations stem from a lust for fame. Unfortunately, this book is completely bogged down by Ms. Weiner's overwhelming self congratulatory pats on the back. She will never let you forget that she is responsible for many small "miracles", that she is doing smart and specatacular social issue theater, that she changes the lives of young women everywhere... blah, blah, blah. Come on. It's just too much. I'd believe your work was important more easily if you weren't constantly telling me it is. Also, she paraphrases the enormous amounts of praise and worship her fans bestow upon her and somehow it all just reads as having come from Jessica's own mouth- again and again and again. This book should ultimately be called "A Very Hungry Girl- a book about why you should think I'm great!".
Rating: Summary: the truth will set us free Review: With candor and bravado, Jessica Weiner tell's us the truth about her life - not an easy task at all. I truly enjoyed reading this book, it's parallels my own story in so many ways it is uncanny. I so appreciate her ability to tell her truth, my truth, the painful truth for so many of us - it is truly inspiring. I hope that anyone facing a tough issue will pick this book up, it is universal in it's ablity to inspire us to live the life we are meant to.
Rating: Summary: Dishonest and Hungry for FAME at any cost! Review: Wow, this doesn't surprise me one bit. I think it's commendable that Jessica finally pumped something out, but I have known her for sometime and find it sad that she is so dishonest. Hype hype hype. Her issues do not run as deep and accurate as stated in the book, or anywhere. These stories become inflated with time and ego. Some people need to feel needed and put themselves in a category to invite a sense of attention and "expertise"- of which she is not. ESPECIALLY because she hides behind it all and hasn't dealt with her own demons. It is hippocritical and interesting. Please, we could all write a memoir! We could all suck off the helpless feelings of youth as well and travel around to speak about it. There is no real progress here. Just a very unhappy person who is so hungry herself. In actuality, this girl has wanted to be famous from the first time I met her. I think it is criminal to mislead young woman this way. Clearly this is about Jessica's selfish hunger, for fame, and that is sad. In fact it is unjust. Anyone can write a book these days.. that scares me.
