Summary: A (guilty) pleasure to read!
Review: Let's see... Where do I begin? I'd have to say that this book was one of the most entertaining reads for me in a while. It is amazing that the Motleys aren't dead or in prison right now. I kept thinking that these guys are either the luckiest mofos in the history of the planet, or they sold their souls to the devil. Mere mortals would be dead within a year if they indulged in the abuse that the Motleys unleashed upon themselves and those around them.Even if their tales are only half truths, it is still mind-boggling. Most of their exploits consist mainly of boinking hot chicks, or OD-ing on drugs and alcohol. Once in a while they'll throw in a fist fight or two for good measure. Even when they weren't looking for trouble, it seemed trouble would always look for them. "The Dirt" is by no means an intellectual stimulator. I wanted to read this book because I was curious about the whole rock 'n' roll lifestyle. And believe me, Motley Crue took the cliche of "sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll" to the limit. If you're a fan of theirs (as I was in the mid 80s), "The Dirt" should definitely be on your bookshelf.

Summary: SEX, DRUG'S, A LITTLE BIT OF ROCK 'N ROLL......AND MORE SEX
Review: Twenty years of Motley cure told from the band member's point of view. starting with their club days in LA, when they all lived in the same dirty apartment to their late nineties reunion, the Dirt provides and in depth look into of of Rock's most controversial bands. Sometimes you get 2 three different POV's into the same story. For example; Vince Neil's infamous car wreck which killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicolas Razzle is told from the POV's of all for members; where they were. how they remember it. Anyone who's who loves reading Rock n' Roll Biographies, even if you're not a Crue fan would enjoy "the Dirt." You won't like because of the book, in fact, you might grow hare them more, but, not without feeling some empathy. The human element is there, and the book itself is an entertaining read.

Summary: NOBODY CAN POSSIBLY BE MORE SELFISH OR SELF-GRATIFYING
Review: While I must admit this is a real page-turner, be prepared for some major shocking stories. I never imagined that this stuff actually happened, and for awhile I thought this was all just b.s. It took so long to sink in. They treat women like garbage/-even worse-almost like toilet paper. They use them and then throw them away. I don't want to imagine the number of girls involved with this band-I think that is so disgusting and nasty. Also the drug use-I can't believe it was that bad. I mean nothing was held back. This is some really raw stuff.

Summary: Wow! Man, be prepared to be blown away!
Review: Most people know that Motley Crue was/is a crazy band. We know the stories of them dating playboy playmates, getting crazy with Ozzy Osbourne and doing crazy drugs. But, in The Dirt, you get all the nasty, gutrenching information on one of the greatest Rock N Roll bands to ever walk this earth. The book covers each of the band members childhood. To the suprising story of Vince Neil growing up on Compton, CA and already getting hot chicks at age 16, to Nikki's very strange and sad childhood. The book covers the Crue's early days of partying, which should warn people to be get ready to be shocked, amused, grossed out, stunned and freaked out. The book also captures each of the band members honesty. Neil Strauss not only did a great job of writing, but also getting each band member to open up. The chapater on Vince losing his daughter was very tough to read. I must admit, I got emotional. The stories about all the girls is crazy and fun to read. It makes you feel want to be one of the guy's so much, but then you read about how these guys have sufferd in life as well. Not just with heavy drug use, but losing money and family. At the end of the book, you will most likely take a deep breath and say...Wow! I cannot believe these guys lived through all this. Weather your a Motley Crue fan or even a Rock N Roll fan for that matter, this book is a must read. I always thought only a movie and not a book could blow me away, but I was very wrong after I read "The Dirt"

Summary: Not A Crue Fan But A Great Read Nonetheless
Review: I'll be honest with you, I am not a Motley Crue fan. I can't think of a single song they do that doesn't make me cringe. HOWEVER, I can understand why others might like them so I am not going to sit here and diss on them. When I saw this book I was intrigued enough to flip through it. I read a few passages and decided to start at the beginning. Every member of the Crue has the chance to speak their mind and the author does a good job of letting them do it in their own voice (though Tommy Lee's excessive use of the word "dude" has the effect of nails on a chalkboard). Everything from the band's execessive drug use to the fights and wild sexual escapades are covered in great detail. Nikki Sixx, though bitter, comes across as the most sensible. His anger and family history is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the book. Unfortunately, the tragedy of Vince Neil's daughter's death should have been emotional but he diminishes the impact by continuing to namedrop and act the braggart. As the most unlikeable character in the book, talking about his daughter's death should have gained my sympathy but it didn't. Maybe he really did throw up on Kelsey Grammar but the way he talks it's like he has this air of superiority and arrogance ("I know Kelsey Grammar and Shannon Doherty and you don't"), when in fact he is really nothing more than a second rate David Lee Roth. Also, Tommy Lee's assertion that the Crue should have played with real bands like Iggy Pop and Husker Du instead of pop-metal fluff like Warrant and Poison really bugged me. It's as if he and Nikki mistakenly thought they were in a band of the same calibre of the Stooges or Pistols and were oblivious to the fact that they were a fluffy pop metal band. All the band members diss on their contemporaries (Guns N Roses, etc) as if they were somehow better than them. Motley Crue started the whole pop metal genre and imitation is the most sincere form of flattery so it's kind of sad when they call Poison and Whitesnake lame. Still, if you want to read about weird sex orgies, mass drug use, big brawls, wasted money and celebrity dirt then you will enjoy this book. I even enjoyed it. I still don't like Motley Crue though.

Summary: A must read for anyone who has never heard of Motley Crue
Review: I bought this book in 2001 at an airport when I was going off on holiday. Although I had heard of Motley Crue I had never heard any of their music, but reading positive reviews of the book convinced me to buy it.
Whilst on holiday I was so engrossed by this book I would try to find any excuse to go back to my hotel to read it. My friends would take the mickey out of me, 'there he is with his nose in that book again' and they would ask me if I was a fan of the band as it wasn't the sort of music my group of friends would usually listen to. But by the end I was so passionate about the book that I convinced another friend to read it, and he spent the second week of the holiday doing exactly what I had done in the first week. At the end of the holiday my other friend was intrigued to find out what was so good about this book. She read it non-stop for the last day and the flight back home. Since then it has been passed around many of my friends who after some convincing that they should read a book about a band who they have either never heard of or not given a care about, and they have loved the book. Today, nearly 3 years since that holiday I finally got my copy of the book back and I can't wait to read it again. And maybe pass it onto my friend who I first lent it to who wants to read it again and keep the cycle going again.
By the way, I bought a Motley Crue CD and thought it was rubbish.

Summary: Amazing read but not for the faint of heart
Review: First off I just gotta say I never cared for hair metal but I gotta say I really enjoyed this book. It's dirty, raunchy, and full of sleazey drug use. The book is written in a way where all 4 of the members plus a varying cast of characters all contribute to telling the history of Motley Crue. It's a nice format because when you hear about stuff like Vince quitting the band you'll get a good idea of the tension that was mounting after reading Nikki's, Tommy's, and Vince's account of the events that lead to the split. So in my opinion it's a really nice format that works out well with this kind of story. Also, I just want to add that this book will pave the way for more books and stories to come. Due to it's success there's a Metallica movie in the works that is going to try to focus on the drugs and alcohol and the more seamier underside of the band. And in addition after you read this book if you still have a hankering for some more hair metal and debauchery be sure to rent the amazing 'Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years'. That movie will blow you away, and give you more insight into the bands that were on the cusp of fame.

Summary: Rock out with your C**K out!!!
Review: Just finished reading the Dirt for the 2nd time.... Only gets better folks. I know me, and my friends. We have commented on how we know how to party, hit it hard, tear it up, etc.... But then we have to recoup, and re-energize. Motley's life style back at their peak would have KILLED the strongest of us. Nikki is a rock god. Tommy is pure energy. Vince is selfish, but the way a lead is supposed to be. Micks guitar made the band go (in my mind). BUY THIS BOOK!

Review: and they are not lying to you, "The Dirt' is probably the sickest book out there, and you know what, I don't care, the story of Motley Crue is not one for the light at heart, I'm sick of people telling me that they hated this book, well, it helped me out a lot actually, the parts written by Nikki Sixx really helped me out through my depression, because I could relate to him quite a bit, and I would like to say that we both came out alright, this is the best rock n' roll biography, forget that, the best music biography out there, read this only if you have an open mind and a strong stomach

Summary: This book made me angry
Review: I'm about halfway through as I write this...previous reviews are correct in that you simply can't put this book down, mainly because every time you think the band has sunk to the deepest depths of depravity, they surprise you by going further. This is a story of how four people who lived like utter pigs and treated themselves and those around them with utter disdain made millions of dollars with very little talent. The book makes me angry because I hate to see people with no values and minimal talent retire before age 30 with more money than they'll hope to spend in a lifetime. Still, the book is a bona fide page-turner, and I'll likely read it again and again with the fascination of watching a car crash.
