Rating: Summary: An Exceptional Book Written By An Exceptional Man Review: This is truely a remarkable book. Presidential Candidate George W. Bush gives an open and honest account of his family, his compassion, his goals for the American people, and his love for his wife Laura and their twin daughters. From this book, I saw the the real George W. Bush, the boy who wanted to grow up and be the Next Willie Mays of his day instead ends up in the oil fields of Texas and eventually finds himself in the Governor's Office in Texas. This book is a must for all George W. Bush supporters.
Rating: Summary: A BREATH OF FRESH AIR Review: No, this book is not a literary masterpiece, but it fills in background and policy positions while remaining entertaining. I'm a bit more on the Conservative side than Mr. Bush, but he is so far ahead of what we've had to put up with during the current administration along with it's downgrading of America and lack of moral fiber, he seems to be the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel". If you like Mr. Bush and what he's done for Texas, you will find the information in the book reassuring. If you are interested in the legacy which Ronald Reagan and George W.'s father left, you will find it interesting as it will cast light on some background. If you are a Clinton/Gore supporter, be careful. You may be converted or you will simply remain blind.
Rating: Summary: Good for it's purpose! Review: This is not a monumental piece of literature, but it was not writen to change the world. The books job was to tell the people who George W. Bush is, and it accomplished this job very well! It covers his life from childhood to today. And most importaintly, is clearly states his political beliefs and convictions, so you KNOW the man well when you finish. No psychobabble, no theories, just cold, hard facts on the content of his character. By the way, conserning his "Jesus Christ" answer as his favorite philosopher in the debate...if you think that a part, even a very small part, of that answer was political positioning, you NEED to get this book! This is not a boaring preachy read, just a good man shareing his past and present self, as well as his optimistic view of the future.
Rating: Summary: What we can expect in a second Bush Presidency Review: We can contemplate what any candidate will be like in the office to which he aspires, but in the final analysis we must review his background, development of his character and vision for the future of our nation. A Charge to Keep touches all of these bases and gives an objective reader a solid basis for deciding whether Gov. Bush should become President Bush. Gov. Bush admits to mistakes and shortcomings that may have graced his developmental years, but shows how he has learned and grown from this experience. He admits that he was not always a success in the business world(although he ultimately was), but at least he was learning to do something other than feed at the public trough. But most informative is the development of his character, from rough beginnings to a stage where he can honestly swear to us that we will not be embarrassed by his performance in office. His performance as Governor is laid out in detail for us to judge and assess how he would perform in the White House. And his vision for the Nation, how he would use the Bully Pulpit, and how he would deal with Congress are laid out clearly for all of us to arrive at our own conclusions. Everyone reading the book may not conclude that Gov. Bush is his or her first choice to be President. But anyone who will take the time to read it will know what kind of President he would be.
Rating: Summary: Book Provides Insight Into Bush Review: I found this book to be very insightful. The media is limited to only a minute or two in all of its reports on the race for the White House. You can not gain a true understanding of who these men are, who are campaigning by simply turning on the television. That's where this book comes in. I enjoyed this simple text and recommend it to anyone who wants to find out more about George W. Bush - the person. He reveals what items are of most importance to him and he offers some suggestions to the problems facing America today. Whether you are already a Bush supporter or not, this book will at least educate you to what is on the mind of the Texas governor.
Rating: Summary: Bush is a Winner Review: I bought this book based on reviews in here, and while it is no literary masterpiece, it wasn't intended to be. It was intended to tell people who Bush is and what he stands for, and I think he did a great job of that and I have to say I was impressed. I am surprised by those who say he is shallow based on this book, they should read the last chapter again (if they even did to begin with). He does have a simple, elegant way of stating things, but that indicates genius to me, not shallowness, and what he says is compelling truth, and a very new approach to politics. ...
Rating: Summary: Excellent Introduction to the Man who Might Be President Review: Forthright explanation of the background that shaped, and principles that motive, a major U.S. political figure. It has convinced me to cast my vote for GWB. I am sending copies to everyone on my Chritsmas list.
Rating: Summary: This book is in the bush league. Review: One would think that with all of its resources, advisors, and ghostwriters that the Bush campaign could produce a campaign book, that if not interesting, is at least readable. No such luck. The main accomplishment of this book is to bring together the liberal Slate magazine and its solidly conservative counterpart, the Weekly Standard, in agreement on one thing: A Charge To Keep is downright awful. Andrew Ferguson of the Weekly Standard pointed out that "...just as the book went on sale, US News reported that the governor is 'hurt that he is developing the image of an airhead.' He's hurt? If he read this book he'd be absolutely crushed." Mind you, this is from a review from a political journal that has been very sympathetic to Bush. The book has little substance but one would think it might at least possess some style. Many of the passages that from the book looked as if they were written for an English 101 essay such as this gem (that the Slate reviewer also noticed): "...I made friends and worked hard. The students at Yale came from all different backgrounds and all parts of the country. Within months, I knew many of them." This book would be unintentionally funny if it weren't for the chance that the "author" could become President.
Rating: Summary: A Candidate to Keep Review: After hearing so many positive things about George W. Bush, I decided to find out if this man is for real. This book confirms that George W. Bush is a compassionate conservative, committed to helping Americans succeed. After reading this book, I feel as if I know him personally. He is passionate and fervently fights for what he believes in. I highly recommend this book for every voter in America in order to personally get to know George W. Bush.
Rating: Summary: A Pointless Book Review: This empty tome, and it is empty, contributes nothing to our knoweldge of George W. Bush. Since Bush has lived an empty, sheltered life, there really isn't anything worth putting in a book. So, instead we get treated to a repetitious series of time-worn campaign slogans. This is a book for the already converted. Anyone looking for some real, in-depth information on George W. Bush will have to go elsewhere.
