Rating: Summary: Can't Hold a Charge Review: Listening to Al Gore repeat the same stuff over and over in the debates was more informative than this book. While the book strings together anectdotes and sophmoric platitudes, it fails to provide real substance. If you want a light, schmaltzy read that makes you have warm fuzzy feelings about Mr. Bush, then go ahead. This is the book for you. Realize that this book only promotes the facade. The man in this book is not the same man who is already asking Congress to condone assasination and to ignore the Constitution by giving Federal funding to selected religious groups. The man in this book is one who claims to "Trust the People". The man in the White House is one who did everything he could to prevent Florida from ever completing a single, complete count of the ballots. If you want to read a well written, well researched, book by a presidential candidate, read Al Gore's EARTH IN BALANCE. While Gore failed to live up to the ideals which he expounded in that book, and while you may oppose his ideas, at least that book was well written and contained substantial subject matter.
Rating: Summary: I pity America Review: I pity America Too bad one can't give zero stars - even one is excessive for a book this bad. If we survive the next four years with this doofus at the helm, it will truly be a case of divine intervention. Bush gives new meaning to the phrase "hire the handicapped"!
Rating: Summary: Karen Hughes is at it again Review: This biography of the president-appoint is noting more than a thinly veiled attempt to dupe guilible Americans into swallowing more drivel about "compassionate conservatisim" As any political scientist can tell you, this simply does not exist and is a nonsense term coined in an attempt to grab votes. Since Bush's boredom with public policy has been well doccumented (even by sympathetic people),it is quite obvious again that Hughes is once again spoon feeding words into the governor's mouth. The ultimate result is a waste of printing material and time that would have been better used on any other public figure. For all of the ranting about morals and intergrity, she apparently believes there is a conservative Republican exception to honesty and morals. Both have an extremely limited view of American intellegence if they believe the Governor actually wasd the brains behind the project that led to this book or that he is one of the great statesman of the new millenium. Then of course is the question, why should the American public accept an adminstration that was selected under dubious circumstances and is already deluded with airs of grandeur. No getting a supreme court appointment to the presidency is not a sweeping message of change from the general public. It is doubtful Bush will be fondly remembered in the history books as a great leader. It's obvious at least half of the words and information in this book is beyond his intellectual level, so she ought to come clean and admit that she was the one who worked on it all along in a futile attempt to endear him to the American people. The jig is offically up.
Rating: Summary: Hollow and Dull Review: I was quite unimpressed with the new President's autobiography. It struck me as empty and packaged, with little intellectual substance. I wanted a sense of who this man was, but I mostly found recycled platitudes. I suppose you can't expect honesty or depth from a presidential candidate.
Rating: Summary: One Star for publishing! Review: How amazing that a man who seems incapable of stringing together several coherent sentences has the nerve to think we really believe he wrote this book! In October, he joked that he had not read a book while a "student" at Yale, but he has "written" a book.
Rating: Summary: Proud to be an American (again) Review: A Charge To Keep is an excellent book. It makes me proud to be an American. George Bush proves that he is a man of his word, a man of principles and values. Something this country has lacked for the last eight years. It is an honor to have this man as our next president. All Americans are going to be pleasantly suprised by this man. There is so much I could say about George Bush and his book, just read it and find out for your self...enjoy!
Rating: Summary: If you want the real facts, go to the one who knows them. Review: I loved this book. Anyone who wants to know what kind of man George W. Bush really is, just needs to read this book. Don't read those books about George W. that were written by Democrats who wrote them just to try to get people to vote for Al Gore and not George W. They try to guess his motives and feelings. If you want to know his motives and feelings, read this book. He tells you himself his way of thinking, how he makes decisions, and how he felt at different times of his life. People have said that he is not an intellectual, but he earned degrees from Yale and Harvard Business School. He had the brains to figure out a way to make all that money after a loss in the oil business. Read this book and fall in love with George W. Bush and have a great next four years being proud that we have a President with character and principles, who stands for what he believes in. Don't listen to the cynics. Happy days are here again!
Rating: Summary: A conversation with George W. Review: In an age of Monica Lewinsky values, I found the book to be a refreshing, upbeat autobiography. I particularly found reassuring the strong role that faith plays in our president-elect's life.
Rating: Summary: Let the man speak for himself Review: Much has now been written and said about George W. Bush. In this book he has the opportunity to tell you firsthand his side of the story. His book reveals a man who stands on his own merit and character. His optomistic world view is founded on his love of family, God, and country. He explains many of the things that have been used against him. As one example, his "failure" as a businessman is actually a story of starting a company as 1 person, from the ground up, and then selling that company when the oil business went bad (the oil crisis of the 70's) and many other small oil companies went bankrupt. But the story you won't get elsewhere is how afterward he stayed in Midland and helped every one of his former employees find a new job. George W. comes alive in the book as a person of values, convictions, and the guts to do what is right, even when it might not be politically advantageous. He has been accused of being a "lightweight" when it comes to the issues. After reading this book I can't believe anyone would still call him a lightweight. He talks candidly about how he makes decisions, about his successes and failures in Texas, and how the experience has prepared him for the Presidency. All this, and the book made me laugh, too. He has quite a sense of humor that is maybe better portrayed in his book than it has been in front of the cameras. Read this book. No matter your political convictions, he is your president now, and he deserves to be heard in his own words.
Rating: Summary: Don't expect a page turner! Review: I bought this book, because I love George W. Bush and I also really appreciated the first 2 positive reviews on Amazon.com regarding the book. But don't expect a page turner per say. I felt a deeper appreciation for Bush after reading that he is a deeply religious man, he worked with disadvantaged children (heart rendering), and he talked about his military service, and educational experience (impressive). Something about people in that generation, they are not articulary "expressive" "personal" so don't expect George W. to discuss his "deepest darkest secrets." (There were other books by men of that generation that i loved who expressed so much more "feeling" such as Colin Powell's book, Norman Schwartzkoff's book, Ken Hamblin, or better yet, "Bill O'reilly." While I admire George W. greatly, I just wish he had revealed more personal thoughts and insights. (maybe its the touchy feely generation x-er in me). The book is worth reading, (if your not into collecting moments in history or political memorabilia) you may want to just borrow a copy. I wanted to be a part of George W's literary success so I bought the book, will go along quite nicely beside's his mother's book that I have (her memoirs). His mother's book is much more fun and "chatty" than his! I also enjoyed hearing about his success as governor in Texas, also it was admirable how he carries out the death penalty and his gubenatorial race with the much hated Ann Richards is worth reading. He is long winded on political detail, on and on the details go...and a lot of things he writes just are plain "boring" and uninspiring... There are some pretty good pictures of George W. that are worth looking at and keeping (such as him in his Fighter Pilot flight suit) my, what a hansom man! (I love him and his bushy eyebrows at Yale)... Worth reading, I am not sure you will be spellbound though... Long live the next president! Hurray Hurray! He is truly and honorable man and that is the important thing, don't you think?.
