Rating: Summary: outstanding Review: I have read not only theis book by Cdr. Marcenko, but every book he has put his name to. To whoever wrote the review to the book for Kirkus needs to read it again. By 1966, Marcenko had already been comissioned as an officer and was already serving on a destroyer. He did not spend his whole career telling the brass to go to hell. There was lots of brass that felt the same way he did and helped him whenever possible. Adm. Ace Lyons is the perfect example, for he let Marcinko create SEAL Six. As a soldier and former sailor, I find Dick an insperation.
Rating: Summary: Great diatribe countering nimby-namby management practices Review: The perspective of a former Navy Seal on proper management and leadership techniques is refreshing in this current world of feel-good, politically-correct management literature. Call it like it is, integrative, fair, albeit somewhat harsh, practices and policies demonstrates that business IS war. It is NOT for the faint-of-heart.
Rating: Summary: This man should run for president! Review: Having read this book many times now i feel compeled to add a few words of my own. This book should be read by every military officer in the army, if only more people would listen to the views of men like Marcinko then the world would be a far safer place. Yes Marcinko spends a lot of time talking about himself, but once you have read this book you will understand why. This man is a true HERO and today there are far too many people who like to think that they are the real article, well if you want to read a book about a real hero by a real hero then buy this book and turn off the phone, you will not wish to be disturbed. I can only hope that one day i will get a chance to meet this great man and speak to him about his theories of life which he explains so easily in his books. If you haven't read this book, strong message follows, BUY IT NOW!
Rating: Summary: Great book for future or junior military officers Review: This book is a must read for anyone going into or is currently in the military. It gives great insights on how an officer should run his command.
Rating: Summary: I love Dick's new book Review: Dick Marcinko, despite his racism, egocentrism, and coldheartedness, has written a wartime masterpiece for our century. His in-depth account of covert ops, SEAL exercises, and the like will grip your attention from start to finish. Don't worry if you don't speak the SEAL lingo, Dick's vernacular makes it easy to follow his progress.
Rating: Summary: Larger than life, just like the man, and best of all, TRUE! Review: This book takes the reader on a non-stop adventure through the life of one of our country's true heros. Richard Marcinko did what had to be done and always looked out for his troops, without concern for whether it would slow his climb up the ranks. Today's world, both military and civilian could use more men like him, instead of the selfish ladder-climbers who dominate the ranks. I have had the pleasure of meeting CDR. Marcinko twice and he is one larger-than-life individual. Cocky, yes. Brazen, you bet. Outspoken, damn straight. If you had his list of accomplishments under your belt you'd be the same way! Bottom line...read his books. You'll be inspired.
Rating: Summary: Good book - but self justifying Review: I have much first hand knowledge of some of CDR Marcinko's exploits and heard many stories while in the Navy, working with various SEAL Teams as an intelligence officer. In short, he was a warrior's warrior and a gutsy guy, but his ego got the best of him. He was sent to jail because he turned into a crook, not just because he torqued off a few folks (which he did with relish). The money he wasted and misappropriated makes $1000 toilet seats look tame. Too bad he had to spoil a great story and life with so much B.S. Still, a good read if you can get past some factual errors and self-aggrandizing drivel.
Rating: Summary: His ego is overshadowed by his accomplishments. Review: In the late 80's, working in the Washington DC area, I worked with some guys who had sneaked onto Subic Bay Naval Base with Red Cell; this was long before I knew what Red Cell was. They spoke about the goofy stuff they did, and crazy adventures they had (they were part of a civilian video crew that taped all Red Cell activities), and also about "Dick" and what a demanding SOB he was. But, they always had that edge of awe and challenge that made the stories more than the run-of-the-mill war stories you hear all over DC. Some have complained that Marcinko talks too much about himself, but then, this is a book of autobiography, not history or journalism. Marcinko has an big ego, no doubt, and he does trip over it occasionally, but following the "you will not fail" attitude he has always set for himself, and the leadership goals he strives to attain, demands oversized self-confidence. In his world, weakness is not facilitated, enabled, overcomered, or an excuse - it just kills you. And make no mistake, he does write up his own blunders and foulups as such. Would that more leaders in private, government, and military circles had this attitude.
Rating: Summary: Without a doubt one of the most non-stop action books ever! Review: Rogue Warrior is one of the most thrilling and explosive books of our time. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great action book. Personally, I think that it is the best book in the whole Rogue Warrior series. If any of you are looking for a book that you won't put down (I sure didn't) than this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: A must read ! Review: Controversial to say the least, but it's about time someone spoke about the lack of true leadership and common sense in todays military. You may not like what CMDR. Marcinko has to say at times, but you better pay attention beacuse you will see this material later and hopefully not at the expense of American lives.
At the very least you will be amazed at the life
lived, the places seen and the adventures carried out by a true "warrior", the likes of whom we may never see again.
