Rating: Summary: SHOCKING Review: I picked up this book expecting to read about a few scandals. Instead by the middle of the book I was nearly in tears. If the allegations of Shakedown are true and I believe they are, then JJ is nothing but a con artist always was. The funny money, the women, the relationship with the El Rukn gang, the lies to Dr. King and about his death....this book is like being whacked over the head repeatedly. If you ever once admired Jackson this will be very sad reading for you. In 1975 Barbara Reynolds wrote the first honest account of JJ's life and was driven from Chicago for it. Now Mr. Timmerman has taken up where she left off. I admire his courage.
Rating: Summary: BUY THIS BOOK-This is the REAL JJ Review: You will be schocked and sickened at what this guy has gotten away with. You and I would have been in jail 20 years ago if we pulled this stuff and yet Jesse Jackson walks. Where is the IRS? RICO? Shakedown is the word. He is a disgusting racist hustler, protected by Clinton & Reno for years.
Rating: Summary: Full of unknown facts Review: Very good expose of Jackson's fundraising techniques and what elements provide his drive and ambitions. What really is interesting are the numerous facts about Jesse Jackson's motives and what the mainstream press has kept hidden over the years.
Rating: Summary: Documenting a sad waste of promise and talent. Review: Growing up in Chicago, Jesse Jackson's home base, one always heard the whispers and innuendo about Jesse Jackson--and not just from his enemies and detractors "on the right". This is a man who has always walked a fine line. Jesse has been controversial within the civil rights community, where many believe Jackson had greatly exaggerated and manipulated the truth about the scope and nature of his relationship with Martin Luther King, Jr., pushed other spokespersons aside to assure the spotlight stayed firmly on Jesse himself, talked one game while playing another with his various operations-particularly Operation Push and his relationships with various corporations, and so on. There were always rumors about his personal life. And, most interestingly, rumors within the religious community, where many wondered how anyone could take "Reverend" Jackson seriously given he had no actual, visible religious life to speak of. Of course, the "powers that be" in Chicago didn't always-heck, lets be honest, virtually never-dealt with Jackson and his fellow travelers with much integrity, honesty or respect. That rumors and innuendo surrounded Jesse was no real surprise-they surrounded the perceived enemies of the Chicago power structure in all cases regardless of race, creed or nationality. So, one heard all this but remained skeptical-it was what you expected. Nonetheless, one always had a bit of a queasy feeling about Jesse-something just didn't jive there. Apparently there was a reason for that. Kenneth R. Timmerman's book raises question by the boatload. Well, actually, it makes allegations and accuses Jesse of great improprieties by the boatload. Does Timmerman have an obvious agenda? You bet he does-this is no fan by any stretch of the imagination. Should we therefore dismiss what he says here? No objective observer can do that. I was pretty ambivalent about the man generally but this book is, if nothing else, a "smoking gun" with a vengeance. Given many of the recent revelations that even Jackson himself has had to make in recent months and years, the case Timmerman makes is both thorough and impressive. Is all of it true? Who knows? That's not the main point. If even a substantial portion of it is true, the best you can say is that sleaze seems to be a core component of Jackson's personality and worldview. There will be those who have a knee jerk reaction to defend Jackson and attack Timmerman. Of course, there are still people who say Nixon was railroaded. The hardcore Jackson supporter/hater will be swayed by nothing written here. The objective observer will have grave doubts about this man---and his legitimacy as a spokesperson for racial, social and economic justice. The real shame is it's guy's like Jesse who crowd out those who have a genuine desire to do social good. The real crime of his life isn't the corporations and organizations he's shaken down, it's that in that process he represses by his actions those who would genuinely help their people. That's the truly unforgivable part of this sad, sorry story.
Rating: Summary: Once again free speech prevails Review: I am so refreshed by this book! Finally someone has put into fact what I have long personally felt about the "good preacher".
Rating: Summary: OK... I'm Convinced Review: If the intent of this book was to expose Jesse Jackson as a self-serving vulture who uses race to achieve his goals then it has succeeded. No matter what "side" you are on this book will elicit strong emotions with it's hardhitting prose. Be prepared!
Rating: Summary: Stop Looking the Other Way Review: If we continue to believe the "Left", The Terrorists that struck The WTC will be merely victims of the horrible "Right" that runs this country. These are Your Taxes, and These are your taxes on Jessie Jackson. I say it's about time somebody told the truth about the money trail. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Eye Opening Experience Review: What a great book... Kept me spell bound-I believe I read it faster than any other book I have ever read of its size. Great job to Mr. Timmerman! It is shocking that the public has allowed "Rev." Jackson to get away with his many scandals.
Rating: Summary: Read it...research the contents...then read it again... Review: Some of the information presented in this book had a distinct ring of truth to it. Not being one to accept information blindly, I spent many hours online and at the library researching questions I needed answers to after reading this book. Clearly Mr. Timmerman has access to information I don't, but his timelines, and his background data all check out, thus making more of a believer out of me. I will not blame Mr. Jackson's corrupt lifestyle on an entire political party...however, as we all know, absolute power corrupts absolutely...Mr. Jackson knew how to use the system and the people who have power in the system to his advantage...a means to his own corrupt ends. As a nation, we need to reject Mr. Jackson, and everything he stands for, past, present and future. Thanks for providing me this forum to both read, and write reviews.
Rating: Summary: The truth shall set you free Review: Jesse Jackson's stature among America's little lefties would be hilarious if it weren't so sad. The rabid socialists of this country consider Jackson to be a "hero" while referring to Clarence Thomas, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, et al, as "Uncle Tom's," that is when they even bother to acknowledge the existence of black conservatives. Anyone who reads this book (or with an IQ over 60) will realize that Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and other race hustlers have done a lot more to keep African Americans mired in poverty than any of those eeeeevil right-wing Republicans. "Shakedown" is extensively documented, and often uses Jacksons own words to show him for the victicrat he is (victicrat was coined by a prominent black conservatie, Larry Elder). God bless Timmerman for doing such exhaustive research and exposing the truth. One reviewer, who gave the book one star, said it was amazing us conservatives were able to read a 500+ page book in so short a time. Well sir, that's because, unlike liberals, we don't need to move our lips when reading.
