Rating: Summary: A very long hard road Review: After Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar record was released and his Dead to the World Tour came to a close. A large amount of people probably looked onto him as a dumb shock rocker and nothing more. This was his reaction to that. A book that a Manson fan or hater could indulge themselves into before they can decide to rag on him or not; to see the world through his eyes. I picked this up after becoming addicted to his music, and I must say this only draws me to him even more. If you plan to get his Antichrist Superstar record or anything prior to that, then this is a great companion. I bought this sometime soon after purchasing Antichrist, and I must say it certainly puts more things into perspective. It definitely helps if you want to understand the meanings behind the songs as well as the man and band themselves. I could not put this book down, I spent all the free time I had reading it (which is not much) and read it in 9 days. I have read it a second time since then, something I rarely ever do with books and yes, I do plan to read it a third time. Heck I lost it and bought it again it was so good.
One thing that I found to be interesting is that because it was written during the antichrist Superstar Era, it has 16 chapters or sections, where as the record also had 16 songs. Both are also divided up into 3 parts. There are too many parts here to select as my favorite. And as many other people have said, there are also a handful of parts that may "stick to your ribs". So that's a warning to squeamish people, or maybe that was the point in the first place. The Long Hard Road out of Hell chronicles Manson's Birth, (which is quite funny to see him as a kid in the pictures with KISS style face paint) up until 1997 during his Dead to the world tour. If you eve had any questions about Manson they will most likely be answered in this book. It will also put aside all those silly dirty rumors you have heard about him.
It leaves us off in 1997, it covers the albums Portrait of an American Family, Smells Like Children and Antichrist Superstar. It's been roughly 8 years and 5 albums since then and I feel a sequel is in order. I feel Manson did try and continue his work as an Author with the Holy wood Novel, but he felt it would be way too censored and thus never released it. If he were to make another autobiography, there might be too much time needed to fill in. Awe well, enough with my ramblings. If you are still not convinced to buy this masterpiece, then read some more reviews, and then come back to mine and see what you think. I hoped this helped either way.
Rating: Summary: With hate I didn't change the channel. . . Review: instead I stayed glued to the TV set as Manson poured over "the beautiful people" and I ate crunchies on my couch. I watched, disgusted and bewildered. I wondered who would buy this man/chick, whatevers stuff. Then this book landed in my lap. Like the song that night, I opened the book looking to find something that I don't like. I found myself. Addicted, I turned the pages and read the book, amazed at the intelligence this man must possess. His look into the childhood and his evolvment as well as his side of the story made me realize that he is not unlike myself in many ways. I am a better person for having read his story. Great job! Also recomend "Cars and People: Pissing at 60 Miles an Hour."
Rating: Summary: Manson is AMAZING Review: I have always been a big Manson fan, not just of him but his whole band. So i really wanted to read about him and find his story and some way to further understand his lyrics. This book was the answer. I don't read a lot/I hardly ever finish books. I read this book in a week! Its so addictive I was reading it during classes. It is so beautifully written and when you read it, its hard to believe that THIS is manson taking/writing this. He talks about his childhood, relationship with his parents, band members and lovers. It takes you to the core of Manson to when he was Brain Warner and you understand his transformation. And because this is Manson, its DEAD honest, like right to the point. Its so surreal and interesting. It also mentions Trent Reznor and how the band started. After you read it you start looking at the world differently. Like his music, this book blows your mind...
Rating: Summary: Great, interesting book Review: Annotation: "The Long Hard Road Out of Hell" is Manson's life as told from the person who would know it best, him. He tells the story of his life starting from the time him and his brother would sneak in his grandfather's basement. Then onto him being in a private Christian school. He tells about how he tries unsuccessfully to get himself kicked out of school, to starting his band, getting signed, and meeting Trent Reznor. Also it reveals the struggles of getting Antichrist Superstar recorded.
Evaluation: The book starts out with the chapter "When I Was a Worm"; the other two chapters are called "Deformography" and "How I Got My Wings". This shows a progression throughout the book from him being a naïve, mischievous kid to him changing and coming about to find out who he was, and confronting the struggles, which he faced. Shows a lot of insight into a man, who often tends to be misinterpreted. This book shows another part of him and shares with his readers some of his deepest thoughts.
I thought this was a great book for Manson fans or not. It is very entertaining; there never is a dull part. It is hard to imagine another biography that could be as interesting as this one was. This book has everything from some very humorous that you wouldn't be able to stop yourself from laughing out loud, to some wild, sickening parts. Manson shares some of his philosophies and also disproves some rumors surrounding him. This is a book I would recommend to anyone, even those who don't like to read.
Rating: Summary: Astoundingly Enjoyable Book About the #1 "Shock Rocker" Review: This book is an incredibly enjoyable, no-holds-barred journey into the scarred, tainted heart and soul of Mr. Brian Warner, known famously as Marilyn Manson.
Manson's incredible intelligence and insights abound, but his darkest moments are wonderfully mentioned with a wry, dark wit and humor that help to humanize the man behind the myth, as they say. His tongue-in-cheek humor and ability to mock himself is incredibly funny, but it is never overdone, and is offset nicely by his unapologetic, description-laden tales of drugs, sex, and rock and roll decadence.
Too many times, artists' autobiographies seem as though they were written by someone other than the artist theirself - such is NOT the case here. The writing has Manson written all over it, and even those who are not fans of Manson's music are sure to get a delightfully, sin-filled thrill out of reading this literary masterpiece. A wonderfully entertaining, enlightening read.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Loved It! Review: I was always fascinated by Marilyn Manson, most likely due to his eccentric and "anti-christ-like" image. Anyway, I ended up picking up this book and reading it when I was at a bookstore one day and I couldn't put it down. Well, an hour later, I had to leave so I was forced to put it down. But you can believe that I came back to that bookstore for a week straight and read that book in portions of 20 minutes. To this day, I feel guilty for not purchasing such an interesting read. I will one day MM, I promise. =)
Rating: Summary: Wow this book was good Review: This became one of my favorite books I have ever read. THe story not only intrigued me but was very well written. I couldn't put the book down from the time I began reading it. I went back many times to re-read sertain parts. Many things that the band did were amazing but to see how Manson came out of the situation was kind of inspirational. I have new respect to him and will never forget this book. It was such a great read.
