Rating: Summary: Interesting Memoir of a bicultural life. Review: Maxine Hong Kingston's book explodes for the reader from chapter one. Each story gives the reader more and more insight on what it is like to live a life torn between Chinese and American cultures. It is very interesting and enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: Simply Marvelous! Review: The bravery of her mother is almost unimaginable. The story displays the strength of women that most people believe doesn't exist. It also contrasts the difference in roles of women in America to China.
Rating: Summary: Action and poetry at its best Review: Ms. Kingston, I feel your story was very artistically written. It painted vived pictures in my mind and gave me images of Fa Mu Lan and her hardships in training and in battle . In short I found your book very entertaining and enlightening.
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed the story. Review: Reading an excerpt from "A Woman Warrior", was astonishingly different from reading an exert from another story. Reading "White Tigers" in my 3rd period English class was one of the more enjoyable assignments. The descriptive phrases that were used to weave the scenery were exceptionally well written. I especially enjoyed the section in the story that says, "I saw two people made of gold dancing the earth's dances. They turned so perfectly, that together they were the axis of the earth. . . Manes grew tall into feathers that shone - became light rays." Another feature of the story which I enjoyed, were the allusions used. "I touched the Long Wall with my own fingers." This is one of the most memorable of all of the allusions in the story. I believe this story is one the best I have read so far.
Rating: Summary: what is the significance of dragons? Review: The Woman Warrior encourages women to be leaders even though society reprimands it. This story inspires women to be courageous and display their qualities in covert ways. Woman, like white tigers are rare, beautiful, and valuable. What do the dragons symbolize in this story? Do they have a major significance? Why did Fa Mu Lan have to learn the ways of the dragon beofre returning home?
Rating: Summary: A detailed, unique story Review: "White Tigers" was an intriguing and unique story. It was also pretty cool how you were able to relate the story to your life. I especially enjoyed the parts where you gave detailed accounts of events like when her parents are carving revenge on her back. Overall, the story was great even though some parts were confusing and vague.
Rating: Summary: An intriguing story Review: I think the story "White Tigers" in Woman Warrior was intriguing and I felt "White Tigers" contained many themes that apply to others besides Chinese. The role of women expressed in this "talk-story" form was very disturbing yet it gave me a closer look at how women were "bound" and confined in years before. The images depicted in the story seemed real and were well shown. I would recommend this story to others who wish to learn about a most extraordinary woman named Fa Mu Lan.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book with a powerful message Review: Ms. Kingston My class read White Tigers for an assignment, and I learned a lot about the Chinese and their ideals. White Tigers is a powerful story, and sends a powerful message of individuality and strength. I can identify with Fa Mu Lan in her quest to right all of her wrongs. There are some beautifully vivid sections, and if your entire "Woman Warrior" is like this story, it is a wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: I admire the style of writing in White Tigers. Review: Ms. Kingston, Although I have only read the excerpt entitled "White Tigers," I admire the writing style you used. When you wrote about the dragon existing in the earth and being found in the elements of the natural world, it created such a vivid, enchanting image. I was captivated, words can be so beautiful. Reading the exert caused me to want to read the rest of your book.
Rating: Summary: The Woman Warrior was a creative, well written book. Review: Ms. Kingston, our class just finished reading White Tiger. I really enjoyed this story because it was filled with descriptive and imaginative creativity. It tells how the Chinese American's are treated and what racial and prejudice they had to go through in the past and present. I really enjoyed this story not only because it was descriptive but the story comes to life in your imagination. Also, she used different illusions in the story; for example "the long wall.
