Rating: Summary: Adding my applause Review: This unexpected book seems absurdly romantic until one realizes that it is wise too. It's a manual for travel and for living, as well as a compelling story that delights every reader I've given it to. Herein rapture rules.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding, Romantic Portrait of Venice... Review: This book was recommended by a friend, I read the entire book in one evening, I couldn't put it down. Marlena De Blasi's words are beautiful. She describes the Venice I remember, from the ristorantes, the gondolas, the vaporettos, to having vino at Florian's on Piazza San Marco. I could see everything in my mind. It was wonderfully romantic, she is brave and daring. Don't you wish we all could runaway to Italy and find the man of our dreams? I hope she considers writing a sequel soon.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I had been in a reading "slump." I asked the young woman at the book store if she could recommend a book that would "grab me" from the first page. She recommended A Thousand Days in Venice. I started it Saturday afternoon and finished it Sunday morning. It was delightful. It was beautifully written, and will be enjoyed by both those who have been to Venice, and those who have not. I hope it is not too long before De Blasi writes a sequel.
Rating: Summary: A Sumptous Feast of a Book Review: Vivid descriptions of food, fabric and a whirlwind courtship and marriage: just what every woman wants. What I can't believe is that this woman who is so clearly in love with food would fall in love with someone who chain smokes! Smoking aside, her story is filled with enchantment. I have been to Venice three times and I am always looking for evocative writings about this magical place. Part romance novel, part gastronomic tour, part interior design ideas, this book satisfies on every level except the gut-wrenching details of the relationship. Did these people ever have sex? I guess "the nightly baths" stood in as metaphor for their white hot sex life. Why else would she have left everything to be with him? Just wondering...
Rating: Summary: feelings Review: reading this book it was like excerpts of my own life had been carefully thought out and put down on paper...I picked up this book due to the cover, being keenly interested in photography my eye sees it all! Twitched my nose at a romance but has I perused its pages were filled with more than your Danielle Steel junk! it was experiencing a new culture, a new life and go for what you know its right when everybody around you just wants you to belive its not! Love the book and therefore purchased her other two books, northern and southern cooking!
Rating: Summary: It shimmers and shines, just as the water in Venice Review: Romance was everywhere in this book. To go back to the printed word as a reconnaitre for me in Venice, was a total joy. Marlena makes every footstep an adventure. Her writing style is exhilerating. The words and phrases literally jump - with her passion and depth for Fernando and their growing worlds as a couple and their love of Venice. Having just finished it, I'm going to begin again tonight! Thankyou, Marlena.
Rating: Summary: Lovely and delightful Review: A bookstore clerk recommended this book to me as I was checking out, and I bought it entirely on impulse. I'm so glad I did! It's a gorgeous book, with evocative imagery and a great story. I've never been to Venice--not even Europe!--but the entire story made me feel like I'd been there, and that I knew these complex people. It's just so honest and endearing.
Rating: Summary: A book that is like a mini-holiday Review: but that is also about Love! I hate traditional romances with beautiful and perfect main characters. Marlena's book is different. She follows a skinny-legged man who falls in love with her at first sight. She falls in love with him, but she also falls in love with Venice. She transports the reader into another world, made of water, colour, light, and... food. It's an unusual book full of humour and wisdom about relationships, as well as a celebration of the senses. I would recommend it to anyone who likes food, wine, love, Italy and Venice.
Rating: Summary: pure reading pleasure Review: I read this book a few weeks before I traveled to Venice for the third time. Marlena de Blasi's descriptions of the Rialto market, Cantina do Mori, Squero San Trovaso, the Zattere, added an extra dimension to my trip. She is a superb writer. She captured Venice and the Venetians with humor, wit and tenderness.
Rating: Summary: A Thousand Days in Venice: An Unexpected Romance Review: An American chef falls in love with a Venetian man and makes herself at home in the world's most romantic city.
