Rating: Summary: A wonderful read... Review: I really enjoyed Parts One and Two of the book. Richard's plight is truly spell-binding. His childhood tales and struggle for survival are absolutely riveting. Part Three, however, wasn't quite as powerful. It focuses too much on communism and is nowhere near as entertaining.
Rating: Summary: One of the best autobiographies ever written Review: Richard Wright wrote one of my favorite novels, "Native Son," and this, my favorite autobiography. I never know what to think of an autobiography. First of all, the writer must have a huge ego, to write and publish the story of his or her life. Second, what writer of his own life story will tell the honest-to-God truth? I must admit, this is the only biography I've read of Mr. Wright, so I have no idea as to how accurate it is as to dates, occurrences, etc. So let me tell you why I love this book. It's because of Mr. Wright's love of books! Everything! His hunger for knowledge was incredible. . .he'd work 10 hours, eat a can of barely warm pork and beans and start reading everything he could put his hands on. (He had to talk another man at his job into letting him use his library card to check out books, because Mr. Wright was black and Negroes couldn't use the public library.) Mencken, Twain, Zola, Sinclair Lewis. . .I felt lazy after reading how this young man educated himself, against almost impossible odds, while I sit on my rear end and do nothing, with everything available to me at no price. This book will inspire you to be the best person that you can be.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK Review: If an author can stir every emotion you have, if he can rouse all five senses then that author has definitely done his or her job. Richard Wright was so cleaver with his words that I felt it when he was being, slapped, beat and most of all his never ending hungar for food and human decency. If you liked the movie "The Color Purple," then this is the type of book for you.
Rating: Summary: ~*Must Read*~ Review: I read this book in my 8th grade english class and everyone in the class thought it was wonderful. I feel that it taught my peers and I what it is like growing up in that kind of environment and how difficult it really is. I thought that the way Wright described all of his experiences in such great detail was amazing. I will always remember this book and how wonderful it was.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This book is about a boy named Richard Wright who is living through the Jim Crow laws. I reccommend this book to everyone
Rating: Summary: what's wrong with you, faydark? Review: What's wrong with the reader from faydark? the review is a bunch of gobbledygook! Besides, this is a great book. And the movie isn't bad, either.
Rating: Summary: The most powerful and passionate story I have ever read! Review: I read this book for the first time 14 years ago and it still rings in my heart as the most impactual impact on my life.Richard Wright was able to capture in print the essence of his soul. He had the courage and genius the articulate what a generation of people felt. And the ripples of his work have shaped a valuable part of my life. If you have ever wondered if it is possible to convey to others what you personally feel and experience, then read Black Boy. Richard Wright shows you how. I am in love with his writing and my passion for reading has only grown through the years. Get this book....
Rating: Summary: Richard Wright is the best black author of this country. Review: I am a white sociology teacher who has been using this book in my classes for 15 years and I have never had a student complain about having to read it. Most of the students are not black, but how can anyone who is not black understand what it means to be black? Wright was a man who refused to accept the world that whites had set for him. The main irony of his life is that he died without having realized the things brought about by the Civil Rights Movement, the things he had struggled for in this country before moving to France. Wright is the master in taking the reader through the life of a black growing up in the deep south, and forcing the reader to experience all of the emotions a human being can feel. One cannot read this book and not be altered within in some significant way.
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK EVER Review: I am a sophoore in high school and I read this book for an advanced Virtual High School class. I think this book was an awesome view into Richard's harsh life. Not only was it a story, it makes you look at communism in everyday life. I reccomend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: The book was good despite some boring areas. Review: I read the book for my english class and despite the many pages, the book kept me interested most of the time. Some parts kept me reading for hours and other parts made me fall asleep, but it was worth it! It really gave me an idea of what colored minorities went through in the early 1900s.
