Rating: Summary: A very slight dip at the end Review: I thought the book Black Boy was a fantastic read in general. reading of the hardships a young negro had to face in america, his childhood. were altogether engrossing. however, I was bored and lost when he got into communism issues toward the end of the novel. Yawn fest! otherwise, thumbs up to a story that moved me and challenged me.
Rating: Summary: Very Interesting and Enlightening Review: First of all, I am a white male who is very interested in the subject of white-black race relations, and in the subject of black culture. I found this book extremely interesting because I don't ever get to see the world through a person like Mr. Wright's eyes. In fact, before reading it, I had not ever even heard of Richard Wright. I just picked this up off the shelf in the bookstore on a whim. Glad I did! I was also very impressed with Mr. Wright's life, as summarized in the back of the book: what a remarkable man. The thing that struck me the most about him was how hard it was to be true to himself and his own perceived ideals in the face of racism and others of his own race who could not overcome the fear or muster the strength to do the same. Too bad we aren't all like that, but I guess that's why we have role models. Mr. Wright certainly is one, in my book.
Rating: Summary: Black Boy was a wonderful book. Review: When I first saw the title of this book Black Boy I automatically had a feeling that it was going to be a book about racism. I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but that was the first thing that came to my mind. It turned out that I was correct. At first I wasn't so sure about reading it but after reading the reviews and ratings it was given I thought it might be a good book to read. Well after reading it I have one thing to say.I was wrong about it being a good book. It was nowhere near good. It was GREAT! It was the most interesting book I've raed in a long time. I think everyone should read this book , whites , blacks , racists , non racists. It's an exellent book and it showed just how hard life used to be for black people. Usually I find the books I read in school dull and boring but I can honestly say that this book had not one boring point in it. From the very beginning to the very end , there was always something interesting happening. I have to be very interested in a book for it to keep my attention and I've never payed more attention to abook than I did with this one. There are some very disturbing points but it's an incredible book. Richard Wright was a very strong and brave young man and it was amazing that he made it through everything that happened to him. Richard's many situations was just an example of what so many successful African Americans had to go through. In a rating from one to ten I give this book a TEN PLUS!!!
Rating: Summary: I felt this book is a realife experience. Review: I thought this book is a very realistic piont of view of the main character, Richard, who grew up as an African-American during the early 1990's. It shows the struggles of money, food, family, shelter, and education. It explains the prejudices taken place against black people. I thought, even though it happened a long time ago, these kinds of things are still present. Richard showed me the struggles, and how he was able to overcome them. I didn't really know how people could have such problems, and yet still make it through the world. This book is an eye-opener on how certain people oppress another group of people. While I was reading this book, I felt as if I was really in the story, because the author was able to write in so much detail, and I could feel Richards feelings, and think what he thought I would recommand this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: I thought this book was great. Review: I had to read Black Boy for school and from reading the discription on the internet I thought that it sounded good. After reading the book I found that it was very well written, It really gave you the right ideas about what life was really like to be discrimminated. It made me realize that people should not be treated differently because of the color of their skin. If shouldn't matter. People should be able to all make the same amounts of money in the work place and go to school, weither or notthey have enough money to fund for school. People and families should have warm places to go home every night and not have to worry about waking up at 4 AM to go milk the cows. It really bothered me howwhite men wnted to see black men fight. It is as if they treat the black men inferior to dogs. As if black men were just on the face of the earth to be slaves and to hardly make a living, and go home every nighwith bruises on their face. Is this right? Should people with emotions and feelings be treated like this? I'm just glad that things changed and that people are treated more like equals. After reading this book I was inspired. I found it compelling, interesting, and well-written. I have no complaints, I give it a 10!
Rating: Summary: I thought this book was great. Review: I totally felt like I was a part of this book when I was reading it. At times, it could have gone a little faster, but it was altogether a well-written book. The way the author wrote the book made you understand exactly how the characters looked and felt at the various parts of the book. What's good about it is that it's pretty fast-paced.I know I can't ever feel exactly how Richard, the main character, felt, but the way he explained how he felt in everything he did made me completely understand him. It's just one of those books that you can't really say how you felt about it,but it's really good. And another good thing about this book is the things that Richard did make everyone feel a little better about themselves.I again would recommend this book for anyone who cares or wants to be informed in details what type of things people would go through in those times.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have ever read. Review: This book shows very clearly what was acceptable to be like in the deep south during the mid 1920's.It also touches on the way things are today, and unfortunatly how it probably always will be.The book also raises some important questions about racism in this country. This book helps you understand things you may not have before.
Rating: Summary: This book will teach everyone of the hardships of a negro. Review: I wasn't too sure about this book at first, which is why it wasn't one of my choices. I mean, it sounded interesting, but not enough so that I'd want to read it. I ended up reading it anyways, since I didn't like my other choice plus there were a lot of recommendations from others reading Black Boy by Richard Wright, so I read it and was glad that I did. It was hard to stop reading because I got really into it, and it's the type of book to read more than once. It's so well written that it should be a required book, especially since it's educational in the racial experience of a young black boy growing up with racism, which the story is named after.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing Review: I read the text in 4 days. It was full of life, even when death tried to knock on its door.
Rating: Summary: A Gritty Coming Of Age Story Review: I first read "Black Boy" when I was about 12 years old and I was saddened and dumbfounded with the cruel psychological treatment that Richard suffered as a young man. His father abandoned him, his brother and mother. His maternal relatives were religious fanatics and he even had to deal with the hosility of an Uncle who thought it was his right to "put Richard in his place."
He also had to deal with the hostility of whites in every environment and even when he did have associations with "sympathetic whites" as well as "fellow blacks" he did not allow himself to trust anyone because he was still emotionally scarred by his childhood.
He also makes us as African-Americans realize how far we as a people have become and yet how far we still have to go but I will admit that his writing brilliance really opened the door for other Writers.
