Rating: Summary: One Crazy Life Review: This Boy's Life By Tobias Wolff. Atlantic Monthly Press, 1989 If you ever thought your life or family was crazy, you must read "This Boy's Life," by Tobias Wolff. It is a memoir that is written in an eventful narrative format. Jack Wolff is a boy who has one unusual life. He smokes, drinks, vandalizes, and steals. That is, however, until he is forced to move from Seattle to Chinook, with his new step-father, Dwight. Dwight turns out to be an abusive drunk, who will change Jack's life forever. Rosemary, Jacks mom, is constantly in and out of depression. She meets Dwight and they get married less than 5 months later. Dwight has three kids of his one, two daughters and a son, who are all the complete opposite of Jack. Jack likes to go out and cause trouble, while Dwight's kids have been brought up in a very strict environment. Jack and his mom desperately want to get away from Dwight's abusive behavior. However, once Dwight finds out they want to leave, he threatens Rosemary with her life. He says that if she ever left him he would slit her throat. This is where the fun begins. Jack starts to think of many different ways to get away from Dwight. He comes up with some crazy but sometimes very well thought out ideas. One of his crazy ideas was to run away to Alaska with his best friend Arthur. Once they get to Alaska and set up a "camp" he plans on sending for his mom to come and live with him. Another plan is to go to a prep school in California by himself. Once he graduates from this prep school he wants to have his mom run away from Dwight and start a new life with her first husband, Jack's dad. However, these ideas are very hard to do and he never does run away to Alaska. When he tries to get into Hill he runs into many problems that seem unsolvable. Though Jack's life is tough, he finds ways to be happy at times. However, will he ever get away from Dwight. This book will keep you reading. Though it is not suspenseful, it is very eventful with Jack running into new things every turn of the way.
Rating: Summary: The story of a boy Review: This Boy's Life, a memoir by Tobias Wolff, is a perspective of life. Unlike Steinbeck, Wolff focuses on his life and the ups and downs of it. If you don't like stories of life, then you probably wouldn't like this book. Toby is a kid just like you and me, always getting into trouble. He is around the age of fourteen, but sadly he is abused all the time. Toby does, however, show lots of empathy, like when his mom always gets upset. Toby also shows patience towards others, like when Dwight (his step-dad) beats him. Toby always wants to run away, because being abused and he flat out does not like Dwight. Also his friend supports him, good friend, eh? Toby's ambitions make the story very interesting, because it's a true story/memoir and it lets the reader see different points of views on life. The setting was really cool, since it took place in Washington State, (rock on) in a small town called Chinook. Chinook is like the place where you'd take camping trips to, deep in the woods. It's also one of those small towns where you know everyone. The school is even a small on that no ones ever heard of, Concrete. The author pointed out that someone does not have to be good at everything to be good at just one thing. Like how he became a writer but was receiving poor grades in his other classes. The end kind of just leads off; it made me and others I know confused. Do not get me wrong, I like the book but the ending could use a little touch-up. If your looking for a true life story that entertains and intrigues you to keep reading then pick-up, This Boy's Life, today. Overall, the book offers suggestions of what to do when abused and what to do when you're bored. Finally Toby stands up for his self in the end just like you and I might do. When he is bored though, he always gets into trouble; usually set off by friends.
Rating: Summary: About a Boy Review: This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff is the true story of a boy who survived a horrible childhood. This book mixes humor with sadness and can be an inspiration for anybody with a life goal. In this book the main character has to survive a rough childhood in the 1950's. He endures constantly moving, separation from his father and brother, an abusive stepfather, and a bad high school experience. This is about the hardships some have to endure before they're old enough to understand. This book can put a person in the mind of the boy and gives insight on a child who wouldn't give up. His goals were to achieve social status and to some day make a name for himself. This is the story of someone who was willing to do whatever it took to come out on top. He tries and tries to become better. Every time he moves or meets someone new, he presented himself differently than ever before. He wanted so much just to be cool, and he refused to become discouraged. He had a never ending supply of motivation he kept drawing from. This book is so much more than a simple tale of an unhappy boy, but a glorious telling of a victorious young man trying to make something of himself in the world. This is about how someone, anyone, can make their dream come true. There's no such thing as impossible, only the currently unattainable. Most people take a lifetime to realize that it's okay to accomplish a goal you set. They can't understand it's alright to reward themselves for the little things. But Toby found that it's alright to have a goal you want to accomplish before he was through with high school. It's such a moving, heartbreaking book. It isn't just the story of a childhood, but an example of triumph and failure, victory and defeat, succeeding and falling short. This is the story of a man who prevailed not just because he was great, but because he managed to survive. Anybody who has ever wanted something, but was too afraid to go after it, this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: UNFORGETABLE Review: This Boy's Life is a definite classic memior that finds its place next to On the Road and Huckleberry and Finn. With reguvinating prose, Tobias Wolff recounts his horrors and classic moments of youth. Forced to marry a man suitable for his mother and Tobias, Tobias finds himself stuck in a dead end situatation between his father. But trapped in a small town of Concrete, he learns the escape of happiness and genuine look at life. I rate this with 5 stars. This book is great and emotional, unforgetably, touching.
Rating: Summary: This Boy's Life Review: Toby Wolff's recently published memoir "A boy's Life" is a accurate depiction of life in 1950's America. The characters are well developed throughout the book and the setting is described in an accurate and consistent nature. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is looking to fill up some time. I wont tell you to much about the plot cos I dont want to ruin it for you. However the book basically portrays the journey from childhood to adolescence under difficult circumstances. Because I am only 12 I really know what he's going through so I find the book very relevant. This is my favourite book along with Sesame Street- The epic.
Rating: Summary: This boy's life!?!?!?! - or is it! Review: This boys life portrays the life of an everage boy American during the 1950's. It goes through Tobias Wolff high's and and low's-and there are certiantly many of them. He struggles to find his place in society and due to his unfiar tretment by the evil Dwight becomes a 'rebel'in his High school. He mixes with the wrong crowd and does thigs which are very bad. This book provides useful examples of experiences of growing up and has hindered my smelling flaps
Rating: Summary: This Boy's Life Review: I think This Boy's Life writtern by Tobias Wolff was extremly dissapointing and uneventful. I found it boring and struggled to read each page. The book is a recount of Tobias Wolff's life as a child. Growing up in a small town in Utah, he encounters many of life's new experiences. Making friends with one of the losers of the school he eventually ends up fighting him in the smoker, the school boxing club. The issues of depression and misery were unappealing and reading it every night was like a chore rather than a plesure. This book is not suitable for School children as they would not find the book interesting and will probally fail and post tests on the novel.
Rating: Summary: This Boy's Life - Book Review Review: 'This Boy's Life' written by Tobias Wolff is a very interesting memoir about a young boy who struggles through life going through many different stages involving guns, drugs and abuse. I really enjoyed the book because i think Tobias the author was really good at making anything seem interesting to the reader. The struggles that he goes through are very exiting and appealing to the reader as it involves many issues and scenarios that relate to the reader when they were his age. I recommend this book to people aged around 12-18, because it involves issues of boys at that age. I gave it 4 stars because i feel it was a well written book and the story line was very entertaining.
Rating: Summary: This Boys Life Review: I felt this book was a great story of a young man trying to find his place in life. Toby was a lost soul amongst the big world and was never given much support whilst he was young. Toby and his mother Rosemary find it hard to fit into any society during the 1950s as they move from Utah to Chinook to live with Dwight. I hated Dwight as a character and really thought that Toby was going to snap one day and kill him. Toby was cheated as a child and unfairly treated towards the end when he was left alone in his step fathers house in an unknown to him part of America. I felt sorry for Toby and what he went through with no father figure and no real discipline in life. The book was relitavely easy to read and was fairly hard to put down at times, I enjoyed the book as it was one of the first memiors I had read and I recommend it to anyone in any age bracket
Rating: Summary: wow. Review: This book was "wow." I read it twice and the secondm time I only read it in three days. I was still amazed by the content of the book the second time I read it and I will most likely read it again. It was full of happiness, anger, depression, and many other feelings that just made the book awesome! Tobias Wolff has a real talent for writing about anything. This book kept me on edge 99.9 percent of the time and I wish that I knew the auther. I think that those who like true stories should definately read this book and read it twice and read it real good the second time. The book is always better the second time. I am sorry that I can't write no more, but I think that I have a writers block. I have more to say but it just won't come out.
