Rating: Summary: fascinating look at the lives of Saudi women Review: I finished this book within 24 hours of starting it. I found it to be a beautifully told story revealing the oppression and sorrow of Saudi women. I learned many surprising things, while being intrigued and carried away in the unfolding of this woman's life, especially because it is all true. It truly changed my understanding of the middle eastern world, and has affected my awareness of what western women take for granted.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: I have read this book, and it revealed so much about muslim customs. It gave me a new knowledge about the culture, and the people. It held my attention, which is hard to find when you're seventeen. I would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: An honest look behind the veil Review: I read this book over Easter and couldn't put it down. It is both eye-opening and shocking for those of us who have been blessed with personal freedom all our lives. Princess Sultana's story is revealed in a very compassionate and down to earth way, which keeps you turning the pages. This true story of the women of Saudi Arabia needs to be told and retold until something within that country changes to allow women the personal freedom which we in the West treat as our right.
Rating: Summary: A TRIP TO SAUDI WITH JEAN SASSON! Review: It was an interesting book, very shocking true stories accompanied with lovely feelings of a woman and vivid description in a way that takes you right to the middle of saudi clan and leaves you there to live among the women and men as long as you read the book!
Rating: Summary: Words can't say it Review: This is a wonderful book. I have read it at least twice a year since I was 11, and now I am 18. This is book is really good until you stop and think that all these things really happened, and similiar things are still happening today. That thought just makes you feel sick. But I would still recomend anyone and everyone reading this and the other Sultana books. I have never read a book that is so heartbreaking, and yet, in places, very funny.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing and intellectually provocative read. Review: Like most of the reviewers here, I am, of course, saddened and disheartened by the abuse of women and girls portrayed in this book. Saddened and disheartened, but not surprised. Like some of the reviewers here, I, too, doubt the veracity of this tale as the 100% true story of one woman in Saudi Arabia. I don't think that any one person can ever tell another's in the first person while maintaining a journalistic, objective honesty. I was a little put off by the way the book is presented and would have preferred a third person narrator for these reasons. I can understand the author's choice, though, because first person narrators are compelling and engaging. I just think that readers should beware & retain a healthy skepticism. I was also disturbed by the Sultana's own sexism--the joy she feels at giving birth to a son, for example, or the way she embraces her marriage. I was uncomfortable with that hypocrisy, although I certainly understand it. One other point that distubs me is that I think this book invites Western readers to ignore our own problems in the area of gender equality, just by contrast. I would be curious to know the differences, for example, in the sexual assault/abuse rates in the US vs. those in Saudi Arabia. Are they, in truth, substantially different? Women in the US appear to be more free than Saudi women, but I think a book like this, while certainly enlightening about Saudi culture, can also encourage us to forget about problems in our own.
Rating: Summary: all three princess books Review: i found all three of these books very educational. i'm very greatful she had the courage to tell the story of the middle eastern women.
Rating: Summary: Amazing truths of life in Saudi! Review: I just finished Princess and immediately ordered the other two books in the trilogy. This book was fabulous! It was a very easy read, don't be intimidated by the subject. I developed such a fondness for Princess Sultana and her loved ones. I can't wait to read the next two books!
Rating: Summary: Good, but would like more references Review: I read this book in a day & a half. It was interesting reading and I believe accurate. I was not surprised much by the treatment of women, as I have known many Saudi men from University. I was shocked by the excesses of this culture and found it gave a good understanding of the passive nature of this country and how it's citizens are drawn into terrorism. The only difficulty I had with this book was the author's inability to substantiate her writing due to the veil that surronds these people.
Rating: Summary: Single in Saudi by Genia Review: If you enjoyed the Princess series, read Single in Saudi by Genia. The true story of a single American woman in Saudi Arabia. It is a rollicking and revealing story of her misadventures and encounters with the same type of men Sultana describes, with a different perspective.
