Rating: Summary: Really could have been a bit better Review: Have read more than my fair share of Beatle books. Aside from a wealth of insider material (wanna see hotel receipts and personal memo's up the Yingyang? Me either...)that are, at times, hard to see due to them being used as graphic embellishment. It's a pretty standard Beatle read. McCartney has once-again assured his position as group polite guy, while practicing generous amounts of retro-histroy. To hear him tell it, HE was the artsy one with John coming in and taking his 'scraps' as it were. Paul seems to resent not being cannonized the way John has been. Sorry Paul, gotta die for that. There are some very nice photos here, but really, for something that feels like such a tome it sure comes off as a Rolling Stone fluff piece. Exercise caution. Get a bargain on the price if you can. I would not use the term essential OR definitive. I think I enjoyed "Shout!" by Philip Norman better.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic. Review: This is it - The Beatles, in their own words. If you're a Beatles fan, and you're interested in the ideas behind the music and how the Beatles developed personally and artistically through the years, Anthology is for you; it doesn't get any better than this. It's an intersting story and a great read, but what makes it special is its authenticity; you know you're getting the real story because it's the Beatles themselves who are telling it. If you only have a casual Beatles interest, you may not find it quite as enjoyable, but for true fans the book is a fantastic treat. A great pleasure to own & enjoy!
Rating: Summary: The ultimate Beatles coffee table book Review: I've been a Beatles fan since they first came to America. From Ed Sullivan to their last gig on the Apple Records rooftop this book has it all. Great photos and cover artwork as well. Also recommended for Beatles fans: THE CARPET FROGS: MUSIC AFTER TOMORROW by Alan Arlt
Rating: Summary: best thing since the last beatle album Review: A great book on the Beatles, I especially enjoyed the parts about their early days in Hamburg. Other than the Beatles themselves, I believe the only other people quoted are Stu Sutcliffe, Brian Epstein, Derik Taylor & Neil Aspinall. Now let us all bow our heads and thank the lord that Lennon was watching from above & didnt let that witch involve herself in this, he must see things clearer now.
Rating: Summary: The Beatles Anthology Review: This book deserves 5 stars and is a must read for anyone interested in The Beatles. We can see how they evolved as people, as well as a band. We witness their weaknesses and their brotherly squabbling, the tragedy and success. It may be especially enjoyable for those who lived through that era, bringing back memory of the energy and spontaneity that spawned the hippies, the Apollo missions, James Bond, Peter Max, and many other great fragments of our culture. The pictures are fascinating and the inside stories about their personal perspectives are revealing. For those who did not live through the era, what we see today of these personalities is contrasted by what you will read in this book. If you ever liked The Beatles read this book!
Rating: Summary: George Harrison (1943-2001) Rest In Peace Dear Friend Review: There are few subjects more fascinating to me, than the way the Beatles came together as childhood friends and parted not too many years later as heros, visionaries, and architects of societal change. The music they gave us will quite likely live for all of human history. Their wit and humanity gave us laughter, hope and vision for our own dreams. The stories in The Beatles Anthology are interesting on a human level, yet read like legend-in-the-making as the Beatles phenomenon takes its place in the history of the years that have passed. The photographs in the book are plentiful and outstanding...helping us to imagine the amazing musical excitement, and electrical energy pulsing through the crowds in the early club days. Beautiful and interesting photos chronicle the entire journey of the band from start to finish. We have lost a great friend and hero with the premature passing of George Harrison. Without him the Beatles could not have generated the magic, the music and the societal introspection they did. This priceless book belongs in the collection of every serious Beatles fan, and will undoubtedly fascinate and delight anyone curious about the facts, times and adventures behind the greatest pop music group of all times. Thank you George Harrison for all of the musical treasures you have left us and for a life so beautifully lived.
Rating: Summary: It's the BEATLES for God's sake!!! Need I say more? Review: This book was awesome! Their stories and their experiences from THEIR mouths (with one or two naughty stories thrown in). The pictures! So many that it must have taken me as long to study them all as it did to actually read the book. This is a must have for anyone who is as big a Beatle-freak as I am. Not to mention, Amazon's price (incl. shipping) is cheaper than any store I've seen.
Rating: Summary: Straight from the horses mouth(s).. Review: First off- the book itself is just beautiful; an amazingly well designed book. It's just HUGE, and every page is a treasure; lovely to look at. My big problem was the cost- I wouldn't mind so much if all (or even SOME..) of the proceeds went to charity. Do the Beatles (and the inexplicable Yoko) not have enough money? That said, I enjoyed the book a lot. The book is laid out in a way that makes you feel that you're sitting around a table with The Fab Four, just shooting the breeze. Their stories are fascinating, especially the way their memories don't...quite....gel. John, unfortunately, comes off as something of an egomaniac, and a rather pompous one at that. It seems that everything of any worth (in his opinion) was his idea. I'm still a fan of his music, I'm just a little less a fan of the man. My only real beef with the book is the lack of a narrative voice- The Beatles mention John's car accident, Mary Quant, etc., but there is no narrator to let the unenlightened in on what happened, who that person was, etc. Otherwise, Beatles fans will spend many a happy hour reading this book.
Rating: Summary: This Book is Big Review: Some of us were sitting around in my room when the lights went out. By the time they came back on, it was the total chaos pillow fight. We were throwing them left and right and swinging them right at us. I was nervous about the collectibles but it turned out fine. Sometime in the middle, Burnie came into the room with an egg and I shouted, "Burnie, put it down!" He threw it right at my head but I blocked it with this book. Later, Sgt. Pepper starts singing and we all listen to the record.
Rating: Summary: Holy Cow!! Review: This is still in print?? Whew! For a minute there I was getting worried... ;-)
