Rating: Summary: charming, exciting, touching Review: My favorite book of 1999, Rocket Boys has so much to offer: a good story, realistic characters, lessons to be learned. These are some of my favorite ingredients in a good book. I bought it as October Sky (the paperback version), loved it so much that I wanted it in hardcover, too, to keep and read again (which I NEVER do). I gave the paperback to my son who's beginning it as we speak, and I'm hearing approving words coming from him already. It's the life of a teenage boy becoming something he's always dreamed about. That's something rare and special enough in real life, and I'm so happy that Homer Hickham decided to share it with us.
Rating: Summary: A humorous, inspiring book! Review: I found this book to be a good follow-up to the movie October Sky. It inspired me to learn more about rocketry, as well as teaching me a few things about it. Mr. Hickam provided an interesting read that kept me smiling for hours. I recommend this book to those who enjoyed the movie!
Rating: Summary: Would give as a gift to male 13 yr old cousin. Review: Well written, but couldn't keep my interest. Very male-oriented book, _in general_. Obviously there ARE women that would/do enjoy the subject matter; I just personally couldn't relate.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: Very few books that I have read inspire me to refer it to others. October Sky fits the category of "must read" for those that want to look back at their adolescence and remember what it was like to have close friends, caring (if not heavily influential) parents, and a yearn to become something that many say they cannot. I am trying to get my teenagers to read it so that they can understand that they are not the only ones that dreams of becoming someone of substance later in life based on a passion they develop at this age. I was inspired to read the book after watching the movie, but I suggest the book so that the characters can become so much more dimensional.
Rating: Summary: The Rocket Boys Review: Everyone thinks that Homer's Dad wants him to go to work in the mine and someday take away his job. I'm not so sure. I think his Dad was just scared that if his boys went on to better lives, it might make his seem somehow inferior. Fortunately for the movie, Homer makes it clear to his Dad near the end who his hero is... and it's NOT Werner Von Braun.
Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read Review: This book has easily received the honor of being the best book I've ever read in my life. It is now my favorite gift to give friends of all ages. Homer Hickam has written about his childhood in a style that enables the reader to picture every scene, and feel every emotion. I haven't laughed and cried so many times through any one book ever before. Every time I read it I am always sad for it to end. There is nothing like reading a 'dreams come true' story, and if I could give it a rating with more than 5 stars I would. Thank you Homer Hickam.
Rating: Summary: A Masterpiece! Review: All right, I'll say it. Rocket Boys is a masterpiece! They'll be studying it in universities a hundred years from now. Besides that, Homer Hickam is a hunk.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational story Review: After seeing the recent movie October Sky, I simply knew I had to read the book. It is an inspiring story; what makes it even better, is that it's a true story. I would recommend this book to anyone with a dream. The movie is quite different but I would recommend it as well
Rating: Summary: Really good book Review: This book has to be one of the best memoirs that I have ever read. Nothing more can be said.
Rating: Summary: A Book About How to Believe in Yourself Review: There are many people who have no idea what it takes to leave home to follow your dreams, but October Sky maps the journey for Homer and his friends. This book is very special to me because one of my dearest friends is from the same county in southern West Virginia where Homer grew up, and her story resembles Homer's in so many ways. I have purchased a copy of October Sky for her children, hoping it will help them understand, and appreciate, their mother even more when they realize what her early life must have been like.
