Rating: Summary: A truly fascinating person Review: Ronald Reagan lived the American dream. He hitchiked during the Great Depression, announced radio broadcasts for the Chicago Cubs, lived out his dream in Hollywood, and then became one of California and America's most beloved and controversial leaders. For any person, on either side of the political aisle, to doubt Ronald Reagan's impact on this nation would be narrow-minded, and if anyone wants to get a never-before-seen glimpse at the mysterious and incredibly popular 40th president, they should read this collection of letters. This man had one of the most brilliant and engaged minds in existence before it was slowly and gradually taken from him. Maybe Reagan's mind was so powerful and valuable, that God decided he had to bring it up to heaven a little early. An amazing read.
Rating: Summary: "Words from the heart enter the heart" Review: Shortly after its publication last September, my mother bought me this book at the airport as I was soon to board a plane to New York. I am most grateful, for President Reagan's letters sustained me throughout that flight and beyond. In the same way President George W. Bush's critics continue to "misunderestimate" him, so it was with Reagan. Arguably one of America's greatest presidents, I so admire Reagan for his strong moral clarity, fervent religious faith, willingness to confront evil as evidenced with the former Soviet Union, love for America, and great sense of humor. This all, and much, much, more, is dramatically captured in these letters, within the president's own words. In this thick 935 page volume, we are treated to the most comprehensive, thorough compilation of Reagan's letters to date, spanning from his childhood to 1994, when the former president publicly announced his Alzheimer's disease. (To be precise, two letters follow this announcement.) My personal favorite chapters are Chapter Eight: Core Beliefs, wherein we learn of Reagan's strong Christian faith and his views of America and the American people, Chapter Twenty-One: The Lighter Side, wherein we are privy to Reagan's delightful and witty sense of humor, and Chapter Twenty Four: Pen Pals. Regarding America, Reagan writes, "I have long believed there was a divine plan that placed this land here to be found by people of a special kind and that we have a rendezvous with destiny...Our nation exists for one purpose only- to assure each one of us the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order. G-d meant America to be free because G-d intended each man to have the dignity of freedom...to be the golden hope of all mankind." Enjoy these letters- words that will give you more of a glimpse into this great man than any biographer possibly could.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding and eye-opening for the Reagan doubters. Review: The letters demonstrate the depth of the man, and how the media misrepresented him. Reagan will be remembered as one of our greatest Presidents; so happy to have this record of his intelligence and decency. The Chicago entry is from a political hack who didn't read the book.
Rating: Summary: 10 star winner Review: There is something so special about someone who knows how to right letters or keeping a journal and does so for decades. Guess this is why I have loved this book and an earlier one I Love You, Ronnie. The man simply knew how to write with feeling and in a manner that makes the reader feel like they are important. And how fortunate we are that someone had the common sense to save his writings, however profound or however plain. I can tell a lot about a person by what they write. It often gives me an insight that those writing about the person just seem to miss. I admit I respect both Ronald and Nancy Reagan. The man was human which means he was flawed like the rest of us. But his positives far out weight the negatives which is the bottom line.
Rating: Summary: great information from a U.S. hero Review: This book contains several letters written by Ronald Reagan himself. It is educational and interesting. Regardless of a person's political opinions, this book comments on an important time in American history. You don't have to be a democrat to enjoy American history and you don't have to be republican to enjoy Ronald Reagan's book.
Rating: Summary: More myth making Review: This book continues the attempt in neo-conservative circles to make Reagan look like a respectable president. Reagan did tremendous damage to the United States with his tax cuts, his illegal actions in the Iran-Contra scandal, etc. Books like this try to rewrite history by creating the myth of Reagan the hero.
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: This gives you a different side of Ronald Reagan that you normally didn't see because of politics and media coverage. I was some what suprised. I would recommend this book. I question if the person from Chicago read this book. Sounds like he/she doesn't like Ol'Ronnie. Ya think!!!
Rating: Summary: Reagan was a master communicator! Review: This volume proves that Reagan was indeed a great communicator. Everyone can take lessons from this man in the way he dealt with both friends and adversaries. This book disproves critics who say Reagan did not have in-depth understanding of issues.
Rating: Summary: Title should be called Review: Veggie Tales. I can't wait for Nancy's book that will include personal letters to Sinatra (love variety), psychics and her pill supplier. Just Say No, indeed. Ronnie's book should have included some letters regarding Iran/Contra, the Iranian Hostage October Surprise and maybe a nice letters to the families of the troops he so recklessly had killed in Beirut. Personally, I'd love to see a note regarding his seeing flying saucers.
Rating: Summary: A Great Man Backed up by the Truth of History Review: Well, since I see the liberal know-nothings are writing "reviews" which are nothing more than denigrations of a dead man (very classy folks, as usual), I wanted to offer my own comments. Growing up during his presidency, Ronald Reagan taught me to love this country, work hard, and he spared my own children from growing up in the shadow of advancing communism. He spoke to me personally as no other President has since. This week has been very hard for me and my wife, since it seems a chapter of my childhood has now been closed. After we are all gone from this earth, and the partisanship some of my fellow Americans have heavily invested in hating a good man, history will surely reflect the greatness of Ronald Reagan's accomplishments. Lincoln was viciously despised by a great number of people, including many in his Republican party, but through history's clear window, he has been proven to be our nation's preserver, and one of our top few leaders.
