Rating: Summary: A must-read book if you love Jimmy Buffett's music or life! Review: As Jimmy Buffett hits the big 5-0 (half century mark) he reflects on his past and present life. The story bounces between his early (and not so early) life and a present day adventure of flying an old Albatross seaplane through far-away places in South America and the Caribbean. In revealing his past, he touches on a lot of stories that inspired the lyrics to many of his songs. This book delves more into Jimmy Buffett's life history and since it's all written in first person, I felt as if I were beside him all through all of his adventures. Having lived in the Caribbean and the South Atlantic Ocean for the past 18 years, I can tell you firsthand, that his travels through the Caribbean are an accurate reflection of life in the "Islands".Bottom Line: If you like Jimmy Buffett's music and have admired the lyrics to his songs, you don't have to think twice about buying this book!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining to those who are interested. Review: Mr. Buffett once agains puts his own style of prose to the masses. This tome is highly imaginative in its style and lends the reader to thoughts of island life and escapism. However to the non-parrothead I am not sure if the book can hold interest. ( I read it in two days! ) To the fans I highly recommend it...to the non-fans I say enjoy the ride. The author is wealthy beyond imagination and at times forgets that we common folk don't have airplanes.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece of "life". Review: Thousands of parrotheads flock to see Jimmy Buffet each year. In his own words, Jimmy has asked "how has this happened?". Well, "A Pirate Looks At Fifty" explains why. This is a well written biography which allows readers to understand why this individual has entered the lives and touched the hearts of so many. His travels document a true adventurer who loves family, friends, and the quest for finding out what's next. Jimmy's blend of humor and love of life details the reason behind his love affair with his fans. Anyone reading this book will realize that his followers are merely individuals who live their ordinary, routine lives through him so as to seek out that sense of adventure we all wish to fulfill. This is a must read.....one which will fill you with happiness and enchantment....and which will leave you begging Jimmy Buffet to "continue spending our money foolishly". Don't miss it.
Rating: Summary: It bites Review: Quick, someone grab the pen out of his hand! How can a person who's been so many interesting places and done so many fascinating things write a book that reads like your mother's grocery list. Who cares about where you bought every boat and plane you ever owned--tell us where you were when you wrote Let's Get Drunk and Screw! Seriously, it was a waste of my money.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic book to get lost in, escape to a life so many want Review: Typical Jimmy Buffette style, fun, happy and optomistic. He continues to bring devoted fans and first timers alike a great perspective on life experiences. Through Jimmy's writing style and the example he sets he helps us all learn how to appreciate life for what it is, a journey to be enjoyed.
Rating: Summary: Read when you REALLY have nothing else to do. Review: I've read all of Jimmy's books and I have all of Jimmy's music. This book does not live up to the Legend I was expecting to read about. I didn't find any true insight about turning 50 nor did I learn much about why Jimmy is where he is now. I do believe he has become a money making machine - contrary to his earlier - "I know this may sound funny, but money don't mean nothing to me. I don't make my music for money...I make my music for me." (From the A1A cd) Like other readers, I was easily distracted and only read when I really had nothing else to do. But if you love the man, you gotta read the book. There were some good parts and some not so good - well downright boring parts. All said he is still the Leader of the ParrotHeads and I'm still a believer.
Rating: Summary: May as well be a partner in Planet hollywood Review: I looked forward to reading this book all summer long, but when I finally did, I was very disappointed. I guess I should not have been surprised, after having to suffer through Banana Wind without a doubt the worst album Buffet has coughed up.He has turned into a typical YUPPY. Nothing but name dropping, (Borders Books, SONY, and all the celebrities that he knows) yet nothing about how any of his songs came about. He talks about how he and his wife don't share the same interests on vacation and so they bring along friends who do. And are probably paid to come along. Jimmy, please tell us something interesting, about the places you've been. I don't care that you make your kids pancakes. You try to act like you are a regular person you're not. You are just another liberal hypocrite, who seems to rally against capitalism and the greed of big business yet you seem to gloss over the fact that you are extremely wealthy because of it. In the future I want to know about the music you write and the places you've been. Not about owning or living in houses that are in every celebrity community ( St. Barts, the Hamptons, Aspen, Malibu.), fly fishing techniques, and how to buy a plane. NO ONE CARE!
Rating: Summary: Just like that special fish - a real keeper! Review: I anxiously awaited the arrival of this book with the same anticipation as any of Bubba's CD's. I was not disappointed. Maybe it is the fact that I maintain a summer home in the Northern Caribbean (Gulf Shore, AL)or that my daddy flew an albatross as a Coast Guard officer, who knows. All I know is that it is that this book takes me to the beach and the islands whenever I want to go. I was so disappointed to finish it that I was ready to read it again immediately, but I will wait until I go "Back to the Beach" next month. Jimmy, see you at the Flora-Bama. Fins Up! See all you Dallas parrot heads on September 24.
Rating: Summary: "REAP THE WILD WINDS" Review: Iam one of the few who remember Key West and the Carribbean before "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot...." With this book Jimmy takes me back to all the wild times and crazy friends I grew older(but not up)with. "A Pirate looks at Fifty" was/is a gift from a gifted man. We love what Jimmy offers us and appreciate him for it. I was lucky enough to work with him during some of his tours in the Eighties at the Tampa SunDome. Those 'stage-hand' experiences and about 7 GREAT concerts later, I can tell you the man has kept me sane while working for the world's largest retailer up here in the Ozarks. Put a kid who knows seaweed, conchs and groupers up with Hawgs and corn pipes and tell me a better THERAPY than Buffett Books and Music....doesn't exist!! I loved the book so much I gave my first copy to Capt. Ron on one of the Sebago sail boats down on Key West during a trip there two weeks ago...thats the kind of book it is. A gift to keep on sharing. Hey Jimmy, you're great and we love ya...keep sharing what you feel comfortable with and we'll keep soaking it up. REAP THE WILD WINDS, JIMMY, thats what Jack Stewart or Mark Twain would have told you and you know it!!
Rating: Summary: Escape Review: Buffet speaks to the vagabond in all of us, even old farts of 68. I wonder if there will be a pirate looks at 70? This is a book to be taken a little at a time, great to pick up for a pleasant read before bed. Non-fans may be a little at a loss at some of the song references, but it is still a good travelogue, cum memoir, for anyone. You can't help liking Jimmy Buffett if you are a dreamer and a romantic. He speaks to a part of all of us who dream of shedding that damn shirt and tie, in favor of a bathing suit and a beach. We all know that the world of Bufet's music exists only in our dreams, but he can take us there if only for a concert. Buffett is not a traditional author or entertainer, but he is the essence of the American dream. He has fun and gets rich while doing it!
