Rating: Summary: A must read for anyone looking for religious truth Review: The individual conversion stories in this book cover virtually all of the doctrinal differences between Protestantism and Catholicism. Some familiarity with Protestant apologetics and scripture is helpful, but not essential.
Rating: Summary: This book convinced me to convert to Catholicism! Review: These well-written conversion stories answer the questions: Which church was founded by Jesus Christ? Who has the authority to interpret Scripture? The answer is clear: the one and only Catholic church. The converts come from diverse backgrounds: some were Presbyterian ministers, one was Jewish. This book is so interesting and powerful, I finished it in one day. Then I decided to convert to Catholicism. Surprised by Truth is a powerful tool for evangelizing Jews, Protestants, and fallen-away Catholics.
Rating: Summary: Easy to read. Full of Biblical quotes! Review: If you have questions about the Catholic Faith, this is a good book to start with. It is really easy to read and gives the Biblical background for the Catholic Church.
Rating: Summary: Great book. Loved it and have given copies to others. Review: I give CCD instruction at a local parish, and this book is the absolute best resource for helping people, especially non-Catholics, understand the biblical evidence for the Catholic faith. I loved this book so much that I went out and bought many copies for friends, family, and acquaintances. Surprised by Truth is packed with great biblical and apologetics information, and it's a compelling read. I highly recommend this book for anyone (Catholic or non-Catholic) who wants to better understand the Catholic Church and its teachings.
Rating: Summary: This book makes converts! Review: My husband read this book, and it was a major milestone in his conversion from Evangelical Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. The short chapters, each telling a different conversion story from a different person, are packed with Scripture and historic Christian wisdom. We have bought 4 copies of this book, and they are constantly on loan to Catholics wanting to know how to defend their faith and non-Catholic Christians wanting to know where "Rome gets these weird ideas!" Christ is the center of all these stories! Buy more than one copy... you'll find lots of people to loan this book to!
Rating: Summary: Clear, readable, enjoyable, informative Review: This is my personal favorite among similar books, such as the Hahn's "Rome Sweet Home" (also good), "Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic", etc. Why? This book was easier for me to "digest", being a collection of personal conversion stories. The stories come from people from a variety of backgrounds, and the collection of views gave me a better understanding of and appreciation of my own faith in a simple, yet informative way. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in knowing why Catholics believe what they believe, and also if you want some common objections to Catholic belief answered in a readable way. This book shares personal conversion experiences instead of just dry theological theory.
Rating: Summary: First-Hand Apologetics... Review: The reason why I loved this book so much, is that the testimonies are given first-hand. Patrick Madrid merely compiled a list of converts, most of whom came into the Church kicking and screaming all the way! Explains the Catholic faith through scripture and ancient church history. Don't read this if you not ready to admit that Sola Scriptura is un-Biblical!!!!
Rating: Summary: This book made a Catholic out of me Review: I was an evangelical Protestant Christian when I began to have questions about the historicity and practices of my faith. I began to read Church History and much to my dismay, it was all Catholic! Surprised By Truth helped me sort out history, Scripture and Catholic Tradition and pointed me squarely in the direction of Rome. I am happier and more fulfilled than I ever was as a Protestant because now ALL of my questions can be answered. I highly recommend it to anyone who has questions, misgivings, misinformation or fearof the Catholic Faith. Warning: You may end up RC.
Rating: Summary: Catholic apologetics at its best Review: So far, the absolutely best apologetics book I have ever read, together with Karl Keating's "Catholicism and Fundamentalism." Must-read
Rating: Summary: Surprised by Truth Review: This book is an easy read that I couldn't put down until I finished. The eleven converts that tell their stories are easy to relate to and interesting. This book started me on a path of Catholic Apologetics that I am still on today. I have bought several and I cannot keep them in hand since once I lend them out they end up in the hands of friends and relatives of those who borrowed the book. I found the book enlightening and now I can say why I choose to be a Catholic.
