Rating: Summary: Buy this book Review: This is the best contemporary book I have read for a long time. The chatty prose is very expressive; Eggers writes clearly about feelings which are not easy to express. It has the feel of being written by someone with a lot to say and a lot of energy. Compared to many other young authors this book is a breath of fresh air.
Rating: Summary: Buy this book Review: This book is very fresh and vibrant. It is impossible to put down and everyone I have recommended it to has liked it. I have always felt that the most intersting books are written by people with much more experience of life(older people), but this book could have only been written my someone young, which is extremely refreshing.
Rating: Summary: A Work of Staggering Honesty. Review: I read this book a few months ago, right after it came out, and the fact that it has stuck with me (through a series of other books) is a testament to the fact that it is not the sort of disposable pop art memoir that all the pomo shenanigans might lead you to believe. That stuff, while sometimes even laugh out loud funny, is not what has stayed with me. My memories are of the book's heart, the depth of emotion Eggers is able to convey even through all the irony and self-referentialism and talk about the Real World, Mr. T and Vince Vaughn. As one of the previous reviews mentions, he's not really using those things as a device, he's just telling a story the only way someone who has grown up in the last 30 years and absorbed all of the media and madness and stupidity of this age can. As sly and arch and clever as all of his chicanery may seem, it still rings true.Throughout the book, Eggers worries that his emotional candor may come off as whiny or cliched. It is neither. It's honest. And you can't help but respond to that.
Rating: Summary: Weirdly wonderfull Review: On a recent trip to the USA, i bought a whole stack of books. This book was among them, and i kinda forgot about it. Untill i got sick, and needed something to read. It made me glad to be sick. This book is simply amazing. I thought that irony was streched to its outer limits, beaten to death sveral times, but was proven wrong. Dave Eggers produces the triple loop of irony, ultimately showing the heart of his book, and -lets get wild- providing insight into the soul of a generation. Its not only a fantastic novel, its overwhelmingy unlikely. It just doesnt seam possible to produce a good novel with his relf-referentiality, reliancy on pop-idiom and at some points hopelessely associative writing. Staggering, indeed.
Rating: Summary: it rocks! Review: this book rocks! it was a great read from begining to end. ok, it gets a little slow in the middle but it was still interesting enough that i managed to finish it in just two days. despite the heavy subject manner eggers manages to keep his writing from getting corny or trite.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Funny and always entertaining Review: Dave Eggers first novel is an excellent memoir that also often feels like perfect fiction. Often sad but mostly hilariously funny, the words unfold in a sometimes brilliant fashion and almost always come across as un-selfconscience. Eggers is an extremely confident writer who has managed to publish one of the most entertaining reads I've come across in years. And if that isn't enough, wait til you discover all the other great writers he works with as editor of the great literary journal McSweeny's. Thanks to Dave Eggers and his McSweeny's, fiction is once again exciting in America.
Rating: Summary: The Emperor's New Work of Staggering Genius Review: A modern twenty-two year old is suddenly forced to "grow up" and take care of his younger brother. And instead of simply "growing up overnight", as the classic story goes, he struggles with the conflicting parent/brother, lazy/responsible, priveleged/underpriveleged dynamics of his life. This has the makings of an interesting story. Unfortunately, Eggers 'poops' all over this chance of a good story, by straining to be clever and original. Eggers is smart and funny, but he is not a genius. Almost every bit of his reflexive, self-deprecating, hyper-irony is already clichéd. Eggers even steals comic ideas from the Simpsons. His long, droning sentences, his endless lists, his utterly sloppy use of English in general, make this book an exhausting read. (Hire an editor!) He seems to think any detail he has ever observed in the short expanse of his life is worth including, even if it bears no connection, real or ironic, to what he is discussing. As the editorial review has pointed out, Eggers attempts to disarm the critic by including, in the structure of the novel, every criticism one could think of. So why didn't Eggers listen to his own criticism?
Rating: Summary: A unique read from start to finish... Review: The reviews are mixed, and understandably so. This is a work that refuses to be pigeon-holed and so I'm sure many a reviewer didn't know what to make of the writing. For me, this was a stroke of genius. The title isn't overblown or off the mark. Eggers has created something like nothing else out there. He's vicariously allowed us into the center of his life and taken us along for the ride - in all its guts'n'glories. I especially enjoyed the preamble - brilliant stuff. One of my fave sections of the book was his dialogue/interview with 'Karen' for his audition for 'The Real World' television show. In that segment, Eggers lays himself bare and is vulnerable to all... and I'm sure endeared many a reader to himself. Often poignant in all its brutal honesty, often hilarious simply because of his witty and dry perspective on life in general, I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Though Eggers himself says the book is 'weak' beyond page 100, I have to disagree. He carries us through a real life, and it reads just like real life. Except Eggers makes real life real interesting and engaging. It's a one-of-a-kind read, and I'm sure there'll be a parade of wannabe bios come along and attempt to copy this book. They won't succeed, of course, because the essence of Eggers is his alone. Excellent stuff and well worth a perusal.
Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Book Review: Maybe it is because I lost both parents while in my early to mid twenties and helped care for my pre-teen younger sister or maybe it is because I am slightly warped in the same manner as Eggers, but either way this book was so real, amazing and wonderful. I wish I hadn't finished it because I miss sharing the stories of Eggers life. I found myself still reading at 3am, I couldn't put it down. I never thought I'd find anyone who could relate to everything I've gone through, but it's all here in this book. I think this is a book everyone should read.
Rating: Summary: At times brilliant, mostly ponderous Review: This at times brilliant and heartfelt book is sabotaged by an unfortunate lack of editorial discipline. You will be moved to tears during some passages. At other times you will curse the day your eyes met this never-ending discourse.
