Rating: Summary: love it or hate it Review: People love this book or hate it...If you enjoy humor, genius, tragedy, emotion, growth (if you have a pulse), then you will love this book. Otherwise you will hate it.
Rating: Summary: admit it - you feel lost sometimes, too. Review: I'll cut to the chase...great book, wonderfully written. Does he have life figured out? Of course not. He doesn't make any claim to be perfect. He admits he has no answers. A normal kid (under odd circumstances). I commend him for putting on paper all the weird stuff we think before we start to figure out who we are and stop caring. Take a close look, in the right light, and you may see a little of yourself.
Rating: Summary: Failed to deliver Review: I felt this book had sloppy style (not innovative, new, or challenging, just sloppy) and despite my best attempts, I could not make myself care about Mr. Eggers or any of his family. You could save yourself the book price and shipping expense by finding a very very chatty eight year-old girl and stealing her diary. Awful. I refuse to be the sounding board for his attempts at hipster posturing and his personal problems.
Rating: Summary: a worthy title Review: I had this book on my "to read" list for more than a year before I actually even looked for it at the bookstore, the more I heard about it, the more my expectations were raised. Luckily, the book delivers. Eggers lets us into his head with his frantic thoughts. The humor emits through the irony of tragedy. The book provides an honest answer to the question, "Am I the only one with these racing thoughts?" I loved the book and will definitely re-read it, as well as buying it for many people as a gift.
Rating: Summary: GREAT Review: This is my favorite book, it's witty, sad, desperate, and hilarious. I love Eggers' whimsical style and I adore his free use of language. I read this book and I thought the same thing when I read Kafka, can people actually write like this? I do not understand the mixed reviews at all. I do however, sympathize with those who did not appreciate the real world interview... the first five times I read it, I skipped over the better half of that chapter. But now, I have some appreciation for it because the first sentence of the following chapter seems ten times funnier after going through it all. This book is truly great. Even the preface is hilarious. I don't know if you have a choice of editions, but I recommend the paperback, with the "Mistakes We Knew We Were Making" on the back cover.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: People either love it or vehemently hate it; I loved it. Highly recommend to anyone, with the caveat that you may hate it. but that's life.
Rating: Summary: The title says it all Review: Loved it! From the not-so-humble title to the rambling introduction to the admirably honest story. Egger's stream-of-consciousness storytelling paired with his sharp wit make for an extremely entertaining read.
Rating: Summary: Nuggets of Brilliance, Flawed Aggregate Review: I've been reading all the memoirs I can find because my own childhood memoir will be published in 2004 by the Child Welfare League of America. Eggers' memoir was a disappointment. He made too much of his parents' deaths. He is not unique to have experienced such a trauma. Even in raising his younger brother he had financial support and help from his older brother and sister. His life before his parents' deaths was pretty mundane and middle class. So the work reduces to a twenty-somthing's tale of angst full of postmodern superiority and naivete. There was some good descriptive writing and interior thought. But there were also some awful repetitions of words and whole sentences that detracted. Perhaps his intent was to mirror speech, but it didn't work on the written page. There were also some very funny sections. But they were too few for the length of this memoir-like novel, or novel-like memoir. I admit to being a senior citizen perhaps suffering from culture shock. I'd read something else by Eggers just to see if I'm wrong.
Rating: Summary: a mindblowing waste of paper Review: Like many readers, I had heard good things about this book. I have a friend that simply loves it. The beginning is good, however, the rest of the book is not. I kept turning the pages waiting for something interesting to happen... but it never did. All of the humor is in the beginning, and frankly, if Mr. Eggers thinks that this book is "heartbreaking" (or "genius" for that matter) then I invite him to take a look at my life ... I read the whole thing and can honestly say that it is written fairly well prose-wise. However, I was left trying to figure out what exactly he was talking about several times and exactly what point he was trying to make by spewing forth such adulterated blabber. The book is pointless, there is no real story. It isn't funny. It goes on forever. You decide.
Rating: Summary: Terrific book... Review: It flows so well. Absolutely hilarious. He can find the humor in any situation. Great job Dave! Touched on many emotions and his self analysis is similar to the way I think about myself and ..well how I think. I recommend it to everyone who knows how to read.
