Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fantastic book! It changed my life. Review: We selected this book as the Spring recommendation for our "Inland Sea" Book Club. I can honestly say it has had a dramatic, positive effect on my life and how I relate to my children, especially regarding their education.James McBride, one of 12 black children raised mostly in Harlem by a poor Polish immigrant mother, alternately narrates this inspiring story from his perspective and from his mother's perspective. In this saga of a mother's love, Ruth McBride not only makes sure all 12 of her children graduate from High School in spite of strong odds against it, she makes sure they ALL attend college! The book compellingly describes the humor, the heartache, and the love that embraces the family during her quest. In chapter 10 - "School", James is wondering about mulattos and asks his mother: "Am I black or white?" "You're a human being," she snapped. "Educate yourself or you'll be a nobody!" "Will I be a black nobody or just a nobody?" "If you're a nobody," she said dryly, "it doesn't matter what color you are." The book truly allows you to "feel" the plight and joy of this family's trials, tribulations, and triumphs, and it vividly reveals the power of one woman's convictions to reach an overwhelming goal. "...The Color of Water will leave an impression on your soul." - Aspire. I agree! It left an impression on mine.

This book will captivate you and when you start to read it you will not be able to put it down. Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Adventure of the Human Spirit Review: My first thought in summing up this book: I'm always looking for a unique new perspective and experience of the human spirit... and FOUND it in this wonderfully down-to-earth tale of a gritty jewish woman who, with no trepidation, embraced black people on a frontier of worthwhile human values, and, despite her many hardships, is a rare holder of the rewards of the human heart.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A remarkable little book to enjoy and share Review: If you have blood flowing in your veins, have a mother and appreciate a memoir with true only-in-America flavor, don't hesitate ordering this remarkable little book. A book for Christians, Jews and followers of every other faith (or none at all), this family's story will remind you that for some, "Race is like a crack in the sidewalk. You just step over it." McBride is highly readable, totally enjoyable and ultimately unforgettable.
