Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: I really liked all the specific detail in this book!!! Review: I really enjoyed this book to the fullest. It was necessarly a big story, but it was really the story of someones life. You know the saying about how you shouldn't judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes, It was like I walked 300 miles in his shoes. I believe everyone has some kind of struggle or problems they face in their lives, but the one James talks about in this book are issues that all of society has to face one time or another. This topic of interacial dating and so on is a very touchy subject and something that is not talked about in a very positive way. But in this book he just tells about his life, it's like a testimony. But he never puts down anyone or shows bias toward any race. He gave both of his backrounds a chance and in exchanged showed the world what it really means to be open minded. I really loved this book!!!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: WOW WHAT A WOMAN!!!! THIS DEBRAH HAD ALOT OF STRENGTH Review: WHERE CAN I START, THIS IS A VERY EXCELLENT BOOK. THIS LADY IS A TRUE EXAMPLE OF WHY TODAYS SOCIETY IS A MESS. UNDER THE WORST OF CONDITIONS SHE MANAGED TO PUT 12 CHILDREN INTO COLLEGE AND THEY ALL AMOUNTED TO BE SOMEONE. AT FIRST I DIDNT KNOW WHAT I REALLY WOULD GET OUT OF THIS BOOK? ALL I HAVE TO SAY TO SUM IT ALL UP IS. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BAD OFF JUST READ THIS BOOK. AND YOU WILL SEE A GREAT AMOUNT OF COURAGE DIAPLAYED BY ONE WOMAN AND SHE WAS IN THE WORST PREDICEMENTS AND MADE THE BEST OF IT AND STILL STAYED HAPPY AS WELL. THE BEST FEW LINES IN THE BOOK IS AT THE END JAMES MC BRIDE SAYS IT BEST. AS HE SAYS "THROUGH MARRIAGE,ADOPTIONS, LOVE-INS, LIVE-INS AND SHACK UPS, THE ORIGANAL 12 HAS EXPANDED DOZENS MORE WIVES, HUSBANDS, CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, COUSINS, NIECES, NEPHEWS, RANGING FROM DARKED SKINNED TO LIGHT SKINNED FROM BLACK KINKY HAIR TO BLOND HAIR AND BLUE EYES. Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: This novel relates to issues that our society faces today. Review: I liked this book and I think it relates to all generations. I think that the issues in the story deal with adults as well as younger readers and I recomend this book to every one.I could relate to the book as I had a relative with polio and I felt really bad for Ruth's mother. I wish that this could be published for a movie as I would like to see McBride's story on the screen. This is a novel that deals with very serious issues that we face even today and many people could relate to this book. I am glad that James chose to share his story. :)
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: THE COLOR OF WATER AND I RELATED WELL Review: I LIKED THE COLOR OF WATER. I AM A SINGLE PARENT OF TWO. I KNOW IT IS HARD TO RAISE TWO CHILDREN BY YOURSELF, I CAN NOT IMAGE A FOOTBALL TEAM. I REALLY ADMIRE MRS MCBRIDE, SHE DID NOT CARE WHAT ANY ONE THOUGHT ABOUT HER. IF SHE IS HAPPY AND HER FAMILY IS HAPPY, THATS ALL THAT MATTERS. RELIGION,RACE, AND COLOR DOES NOT MATTER TO HER. I ALSO FEEL, THAT THE CHILDREN REALLY ADMIRE THERE MOTHER FOR ALL THAT SHES DONE. THEY ALL HAVE A GREAT EDUCATION, AND A GREAT UP BRINGING. THIS HAS ABLED THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE IN LIFE.THIS BOOK HAS TAUGHT AND SHOWED ME TO NEVER GIVE UP, AND TO FOLLOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: IT WILL MAKE YOU THINK TWICE FOR YOUR ACTIONS & THOUGHTS... Review: The color of water is an extremely good book. I do not like reading very much but this book changed my whole perspective of people. When I looked at people I would criticize them but one thing i learned is to not criticize until you're in their shoes. Ruth, born Ruchel Shilsky, went through plenty in her life. More than any of us could imagine. She was a jewish girl, daughter of a rabbi, who left her family and ways of living to discover herself in her new life. She married a black man and became dead to her family and got criticized by others more and more each day. Even her children were embarrassed to have a white mother. As time went by her husband died and she remarried to another black man. Despite all the criticism from others she managed to put all of her 12 children through college and are now some of the most successful people living. It's an inspiring novel and it really makes you think. We sometimes make fun of other people not thinking of how hard their lives already are. We often criticize people for their race, color, or religion but why? No matter how beautiful you think you are I am as beautiful as you. In the eyes of God we are all the same. Rachel was no different than anyone else neither are you. This book will inspire you to stand up for yourself and to your values and morals. Think of it this way, if Rachel did it why can't you? If i could give this book 6 stars i would but the limit is 5. It's really good, but don't take my word for it... read it yourself!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A wonderful tribute to any mother!!! An inspiration to all! Review: I read this book last fall when I was in a deepening depression. This is a book about courage, strength and integrity. The author's mother raised 10 (I think) children basically on her own in a time when interracial relationships let alone marriages were forbidden. Her father disowned her and some of the african american neighbor's were a little cold to her as well. It seems that not only the author had an identity crisis but his sibs had to find out who they were in all this. Every child has to find their identity but it is much harder in a society where being bi-racial is forbidden or unrecognised. I have nothing but respect and esteem for the auther and his family. This memoior is heartfelt and honest. It will make you cry and even be less ignorant and more understanding to the African-Americans as well as those who are bi-racial. What a tribute to his mother because she succeeded against the odds and raised her children This book uplifted me and gave me hope. Thanks to James McBride and his wonderful family for enriching my life!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: One of the best books I've ever read! Review: This book inspired me to write the story of my own life. Whether or not people will want to read it remains to be seen, but I'm glad it's done!
