Summary: Weird and GREAT
Review: I was prompted to read "Running With Scissors" after enjoying Augusten Burroughs' "Dry" which I read upon recommendation after enjoying Rikki Lee Travolta's "My Fractured Life." I am not sorry for the recommendation. This is a great book. I enjoyed it even more than I did "Dry" which I already thought was terrific. "Running With Scissors" actually has more similarity to "My Fractured Life" than "Dry" and is on that same level of grand surreal reality that is just too weird to be true yet somehow it. It is funny and scary and sad and uplifting all wrapped up in one. You have a kid with a crazy mother who is sent to live with an even crazier shrink who pops Valium like candy and has a child molester living in a shed in the backyard. Weird? You bet! And absolutely great! Like I said, it is just as strange as "My Fractured Life" and just as great. I really can't say enough about it. I loved this book.

Summary: Disturbing - Nothing like David Sedaris
Review: After learning that people who enjoyed David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day reccommended this book, I immediately bought it. However, this book is not humourous nor clever, it is quite disturbing. This book has few, if any, funny parts. I will admit this book is unique in that I cannot compare it to anything else I have read. I would not suggest anyone read this book unless they are looking for a sick, twisted, disturbing tale. IT is hard to imagine anyone thought this was funny, it is not even a dark comedy - it is just dark. I would not recommend this book.

Summary: Bravo for Burroughs
Review: I could not put this book down! It was compelling, interesting, scary, and wonderful- the range of emotions I felt was amazing. I ran out and bought Dry which I found to be even better! Mr. Burroughs'story is unbelievable. I am so happy for his success.

Summary: Not your ordinary childhood pains.
Review: This book was funny in the most disturbing ways. It is amazing to think that people like this exist and I am often reminded of that fact when in public with those not all "there." Amazing to think that the doctor did not get the trouble early on and that the children were allowed to roam witoout adult supervision. This was a great read especially if you have children and take good care of them. The homosexuality was not surprising in the least and it was good to see that Augusten managed to stay relatively sane in the environment tainted with mentally ill adults.

Summary: Wow! Disturbed Coated With Candy
Review: Very well written. I had no idea what I was getting into when I purchased this book. Because it was on the best sellers list, I worried it was going to be boring and predictable. But to my pleasant surprise, the book was anything but predictable.

Burroughs has an amazing way of speaking of tragedy and squalor in an almost detached, these are just the facts sort of way. In the midst of all the chaos and debauchery, I never sensed a hint of "poor me" from the author, or of him passing judgment on others. It seemed more like a camera was placed somewhere in the room recording all the mess.

For those who had adverse reactioins to the book, I think the issue lies more within themselves than from within the book. And if you found the book so disgusting and hideous, then why'd you read the whole thing?

Summary: Great book, Great author, just Great.
Review: This was a great book (in case you didn't get that from my title). I could not put it down. It fascinated me that Augusten Burroughs seriously grew up like this. I had to keep reading to find out what other crazy things he experienced. Plus, he had a way of turning such a terrible childhood into a hysterical memoir that kept me laughing out loud throughout.. So of course I ran out and bought Dry...Loved the hell out of it. Now I'm on Sellevision and I have complete confidence that Mr. Burroughs will not disappoint!

Summary: Not funny!
Review: I've never written a review before, but I need to vent about how much I disliked this book! I am stunned by the number of positive reviews this book has received. I'm a big fan of David Sedaris and a friend got me this book for Christmas based upon the comparisons to Sedaris.

It's disturbing and not funny--I can't even imagine what parts of this book other reviewers found "hilarious."

Summary: I found this to be a great book
Review: I was given this book and Nightmares Echo. I have read the reviews of this book, Running with Scissors...and just don't get the bad reviews. What I found was an honest account of child abuse, child abuse that happens in many forms. The book is truthful, deep....makes you think!!. I rate it a 5 and would go higher with the stars if they had them. I think this is a must read book. I was also impressed with Nightmares Echo. The two books really show, and make you the reader understand the lives some children must live.

Summary: I smiled but didn't LOVE it.
Review: I didn't put it down but I was pretty glad it was over. Made me sad more than it made me laugh. Really pushed the edge of being hard to believe. Most of all I enjoyed the historic time in which it is set. Can't wholeheartedly recommend it.

Summary: Horrifingly great!
Review: This book is hysterical and sad at the same time. Augusten Borroughs is a very talented writer. What an accomplishment to rise to success from such a misguided childhood. Can't wait to read the sequel.
