Rating: Summary: A Child Called "It" Review: I have read all 500+ customer reviews of this book and was astonished that only three people questioned the validity of Pelzer's story. My review makes four.Dave, answer some questions for your readers: At no time, through all the torture and torment -- both physical and mental -- did it occur to you to run away from "Mommie Dearest"? To seek help from outside the home? Why is there no corroborating evidence from other family members? Your father, brothers and grandparents simply deserted you? How does one survive starvation for three weeks? Especially a very young child? How does one survive a deep stab wound to the stomach? Especially when packing the wound with dirty rags from the basement? No serious infection? No medical attention needed? No serious illness from being forced to eat feces? Nothing? How about the family physician? He didn't suspect anything during checkups? School teachers didn't notice filthy clothes and no food intake? They didn't ask why you weren't eating lunch? How about the unexplained weight loss? Nobody noticed? Too many unanswered questions, Dave. My advice to anyone who is considering this book: Don't believe everything you read.
Rating: Summary: a child called it by genieve in el cajon Review: I think this book was great. I started reading it and couldn't stop. It is about a child's courage to survive. A boy named David was abused by his mother. This wasn't just hitting it was starvation, suffering and pain. One thing that caught my attention in this book was how his mother made him swallow amonia. His family disowned him and called him "it". He would go without food for days. He had to sleep in the garage and eat things even the dog wouldn't even touch! This book made me cry and laugh. It also surprised me how his mother could be soo mean to him. I recommend this book to anyone who like tear-jerkers!
Rating: Summary: Emotions Review: I can not begin to explain the range of emotions that I experienced as I read this book. I found myself having to put this book down and taking a timeout, the anger I felt towards the mother was too much to handle at times. At times I actually questioned weather this was a true story , knowing full well that it was. You will walk away from this book a changed individual. I will buy the 2 other books in the trilogy.
Rating: Summary: A Touch of Reality Review: A Child Called 'IT' describes an emotional and formidable display of outstanding courage in amazing detail of one child's courage to survive. To appreciate and fully understand the bizarre and masochistic behaviour inflicted on David Pelzer would be to step inside the mind and soul of David. I have previously read about other people's terrors and nightmares, but never in my life have I read such a gruesome portrayal of one young boy's life. To be submitted to this kind of torture seems so unimaginable that I can only wish that it were just some sick twisted tale. Unfortunately the words that I read were too horrific and I knew that no sane person could ever have made them up. As I moved from page to page I found my heart beating faster, the palms of my hands clam up, and my eyes fill with tears time and time again. As I drew to a close, I let the tears come freely as my entire soul reached out to David as he shared the special bond between himself and his son. The silent truth is that there are thousands of vulnerable children being abused in our society. Whether the abuse is physical, emotional or of a sexual nature, the victim will have to carry the weight of the past with them all through their lives. Some will deal with their hurt and pain by burying it deep in their souls, whilst others will be strong enough to move forward. Unfortunately there are those that believe that abuse is the only thing they know and are unable to break the vicious cycle of abuse. It takes the strongest of them all to confront their fears and begin to break the silence. David Pelzer has found that courage and shares with us the pain and sorrow of his long and lonely journey. Whilst it is hard to imagine why people want to inflict such torture on another human being, I am sure that I speak for us all when I commend David on his bravery in his courage to survive.
Rating: Summary: Gripping and touching Review: I sat down intending to read a couple of chapters just to start the book and soon found myself at the end. I gasped, flinched and cried as I read it. I'm continually amazed at how some people can be so cruel and thoughtless in their treatment of others, child or adult. I look forward reading about Dave's years in foster care.
Rating: Summary: as a child and youth care worker Review: I am amazed when people write that it is a story that is not real. I work with children who have been abused, many have cried out to adult who have done nothing. Even as a child I was abused and would tells teachers who did nothing. This story is not about all abused children, it is about David and what he remembers. I do understand why the books were written in separate, as each represents a different time in his life. But for price reasons I would have liked them all together.
Rating: Summary: Compelling but with So So Writing Review: What the author describes is compelling because it is horrible and true. That's what makes this book a quick read, about three hours for me. I too have experienced abuse, mainly psychological. It was also a quick read because it was simply written, which is not the same as well written. The flow of events at times jumped abruptly as if the text were poorly edited. This was disruptive and I felt a bit cheated of my money and insulted. Also, the portraits of the family members, including the mother, were lacking. The author says the next two books will answer some of the questions readers probably have. I think he should have written just one book containing the whole story.
Rating: Summary: A Child Called "IT" Review: The Child is nothing more than an "IT!" Dave Pelzer is the main character of A Child Called "IT." The book is a true story about a boy that gets abused badly. His mother is the one who abuses Dave. One pair of clothes, the families pariah, the smelly kid in school, what more could be asked for? After he gets stabbed my his mother, he gets one night of rest from the abuse on the cot in the garage. Read the sequal to see if Dave lives through his mother's abuse. The Child is less than a dog, an "IT!" A suspence filled book with tear-jerking moments recomended to anyone who has a heart.
Rating: Summary: best book ever Review: can't wait for the next book to come out - it was a great read!

This book truly opens your eyes to the world as well as to the great courage of this truly amazing man.
