Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: A Child Called "It" makes you realize what a messed up world we live in. It touches your heart and makes you want to go out and save other children from being brutally abused. I could not put this book down and could not wait to read the other two books that followed this one to find out what happened to David Pelzer. After reading this true story of a desperate child with the will to survive it makes you realize what really matters in this life. I was in awe that a child so young was smart enough what to do in order survive day to day. This is a must read book as well as his other two that conclude this story.

Rating: Summary: A Touching, Fantastic Story! Review: Why did she pick on him and only him? Why did she choose to abuse him, yet she treated his brothers with love? These were two of the many questions going through my head while reading the book A Child Called "It." I could not put this book down from the second I started to read it. I can see why A Child Called "IT" by David Pelzer is a best-selling book; it is a wonderful yet shocking true story. This book is in no way similar to circumstances in my life, but some of the challenges David must overcome hit home with me. First, David is secluded from his family and the rest of the world. He is therefore lonely. The poor boy is kept down cellar and is forced to listen to his family upstairs living the life like it should be lived. I feel this way frequently in my family. Before adopting me my mother had six children. Being adopted, I sometimes feel like David does when he can hear his family upstairs having fun. At time, I feel alone and secluded from my family because I am not like them. When David feels lonely I can sympathize with him because I to can feel lonely in my family. David overcomes his loneliness by dreaming daydreams. He dreams wonderful dreams that take him away from his brutal reality. When he dreams, he can be whatever he would like. Most times David would pretend he was Superman flying into the world. I do this also. I do not dream I am superman, but I like to fantasize of the person I would like to be someday. Like David, I use my dreaming as an escape from reality. For those few moments David had to dream, he got to be whatever he wanted. This poor boy was sent to school in rags. His cruel mother would not even wash his clothes for him. She just let him smell and look horrible. Kids at school would tease David relentlessly. This was sad to read because they did not know the truth. The kids were just assuming David wanted to be the way he was. I am guilty of what those children were guilty of also. I also assume things about people. If I saw someone like David with bruises all over his body torn, gross clothes I would look the other way. Many people are like me. The sad truth is that people just assume and do not take the time to find out the real story. After reading this story, I will give second thoughts to judging people only on appearance. If people had been less judging of David and more caring, then maybe David could have been helped at a young age. Kids would get so angry with him for stealing food from them, but they did not take the time to ask why? Unfortunately, I would have done what the other kids did. I would have also just gotten mad, but I would like to change that part of me. I would like to try to assume less and judge less. It would make life much better. In closing, what David went through was horrible. This was the most heart-wrenching book I have ever read, but still was very helpful. Usually reading books is a chore for me, but this book was wonderful. This had me think about life in a new way. A Child Called "IT" was inspiring to me. I recommend this book to anyone who would like have his or her eyes opened to a brutal reality of life.

Rating: Summary: Speaking the Unspeakable Review: The only way that we can deal with all the horrors in this world is to close our eyes and to pretend that they don't exist. We are only capable of dealing with them, in small, bite size doses. This book, by describing, all the living nightmares, that no human being at any age, nevermind a child, should ever have gone through, forces you to open your eyes. I cried for an hour after closing the book. From happiness that David Pelzer survived and emerged victorious. From saddness and outrage that he or any other person had to or would ever have to survive or deal with any tragedy of such immense magnitude. The amazing courage and strength it must have taken to put these experiences down on paper has to be praised. The fairness with which he describes the most unfair of events teaches forgiveness and grace. Thank you, David, for writing this book. Thank you for surviving. Thank you for not giving up on this world. Thank you for living.
Rating: Summary: A child called it- Review: I will start off by saying that by reading the book a child called it I learned a lot about my self. I know that i am a very lucky person and I am very thankfull of the fact I have two loveing parents who have no addictions and make sure that my eleven year old brother and I have every thing we need. The book taught me that no matter how bad A day can seem only you can make it better. Im thank full for every day bad or good. I feel that every one can identify with this book if they read it.
Rating: Summary: A Child Called "IT" Review: I'm in 8th grade and we read this book in reading class. When my teacher said that the book would be hard for some people to take, I just thought that she was just saying that to get her students interested. But when you look up and scanning the class you see almost all of the boys have TEARS welling up in there eyes you know that Mrs.-------- was absoulutly correct. I truly recommend this book for someone who is not all that big on reading because I know that I surely couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Excellent insight on Child Abuse Review: This book was so powerful that I could not put it down. This book is a first hand account of the abuse and cruelty experienced by the child Dave Pelzer. For those who do not have their own personal abuse experiences, this can give you an excellent look at what children like Dave go through. For those who have experienced similar abuse, you will be able to identify with the feelings young David has. You can share in the different ways Dave tried to get through the abuse with one goal: survival. This book is such a wonderful, honest depiction from the child's stand-point. I would highly recommend this book to every parent, teacher, social worker, foster parent, and special needs adoptive parent. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
