Rating: Summary: This is an awesome book! Review: This is an awesome book! Very reader friendly. I finished it a month ago, and it still has me in it's grasp. This is way above the average 'ex-military guy writes his book' novel. I strongly believe this is because Mr. Pfarrer was an acomplished screenwriter before he ever wrote his novel. He was able to tell his story the way he wanted to and not how a ghostwriter thought he should. Mr. Pfarrer writes with candor about what he went through to become a SEAL. He speaks about what his team did to survive in Beruit. He tells about the WAR waged against 'peacekeepers' for six very long months before the Marine barricks were bombed. He is honest about his role in the covert war in Central America during the 1980's. The book is focused on his team's achievments not on how great he was as an individual. I very much appreciated his honesty about how he treated the women in his life during these years. It is not often a man is this honest about his faults. I also liked that he kept the technical guy stuff about weapons to a minium, this made the book much more readable for me.
Rating: Summary: A globe-spanning military memoir Review: "Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy SEAL," by Chuck Pfarrer, takes the reader into the world of the U.S. Navy's special warfare community: "the smallest and most elite special operations force in the United States military" (ix). Pfarrer also notes that the acronym "SEAL" stands for the elements in which he and his sailors were trained to operate: sea, air, and land.
Pfarrer's story has a truly global scope, moving from the States to Lebanon, Europe, and Central America. He vividly describes the rigors of SEAL training and the high-adrenaline missions he took on afterwards. Along the way are some colorful portraits of SEALs he knew, including those who mentored him. Particularly powerful is Pfarrer's account of his tour in Lebanon in 1983, during which a devastating attack was unleashed on U.S. forces.
Pfarrer writes about the particular mystique and distinctive qualities of the SEAL community. He discusses SEAL encounters and collaborations with foreign military forces all over the world. Also intriguing are his descriptions of SEAL relationships with other communities within the U.S. military--Marines, surface warfare sailors, Army paratrooper instructors, etc. He also doesn't shy away from discussing problems within the SEAL world or the toll this demanding life can have on people.
At over 400 pages, this is a substantial text. But despite its length, it's a lean and polished work. Pfarrer fills the book with just the right amount of technical and tactical details--enough to complement the human story without overwhelming it. His prose is vigorous, flavorful, and solid, with an occasional satiric edge which I found most refreshing. "Warrior Soul" is truly an outstanding American military memoir.
Rating: Summary: Candid and well written Review: "Warrior Soul: The Memoirs of a Navy SEAL", by Chuck Pfarrer is quite a change from what I normally read. I subscribe to AVANTGO's RANDOMHOUSE channel and one of the excerpts they provided was from the first chapter of this book. After reading the excerpt, I was instantly hooked. I HAD to find out what happened next. I bought the book the next day. It's a real eye opener when you realize the things Pfarrer describes are true and part of our history. The author has a knack for conveying a wide range of emotion to the reader, making him/her feel like they were in the trenches, jungle, sub, boat or alley with him. Looking for a SAFE adrenaline boost? Read this book. The book also mentions a number of world events that someone from my generation may have heard of, but was too young to put into global historical context. The author generated a genuine interest in me, that lead to my researching a few of these events. I can understand why, when looking for this book at the book store, I found it under military history.
Rating: Summary: A vivid and gripping personal testimony of fighting Review: A welcome and highly recommended addition to the growing library of military autobiographies, Warrior Soul: The Memoir Of A Navy Seal is Chuck Pfarrer's personal memoir of training and participating in an elite fighting unit, one that was renowned for never surrendering, never being captured, and never leaving a teammate or a fallen comrade in field. A vivid and gripping personal testimony of fighting with every tool at one's disposal and never giving up, as well as the heightened awareness and the skills that keep one alive in the midst of a war zone, Warrior Soul is an utterly unforgettable true-life read that lives up to its title.
Rating: Summary: Another Must-Have for the military enthusiast... Review: Anyone interested in learning about the Navy SEALs should read this!
Rating: Summary: Great writing without the macho crap! Review: Are you looking for a good, first-hand account from a Navy Seal, well written and without false bravado? This is it. Pfarrer concentrates on the other amazing men with whom he has worked, fought and survived. When he does focus on himself, it is as often about his own faults, fears and failures as it is his successes and triumphs. And have no doubt - Pfarrer was not a "borderline" contributer, as he served on the infamous counter-terrorism Seal Team Six, the best of the best. For a more detailed account of BUD/S training, read Dick Couch's "Warrior Elite: The Forging of Seal Class 228". For an honest, surprisingly well-written account of one man's career as a Navy Seal, you cannot go wrong with Pfarrer's "Warrior Soul". The first chapter will grab you for sure!
Rating: Summary: Gut busting humor, tempered with the reality of combat Review: Chuck can take simple words and twist them into a visual image that needs no further input. Going from the mundane hurry up and wait mentality of typical military ops, he takes you from humorous bar scenes to the horrors of terrorism and the mayhem resulting from underestimating the enemy and complacency. Political correctness takes its toll in attitudes, men, and the morale of entire countries. This can be read between the lines. Chuck pulls no punches and lays it out for anybody to see. The men who do the fighting and the ones who create the need for these men to fight are not generally on the same sheet of music. Politics and appeasement are the enemies. WARRIOR SOUL is not just another 'SEAL' book in typical fashion. I DO NOT compare it to the other books by former SEALs. This one is in a class by itself. Thanks for a great book and thanks for your service to our nation. Grab a copy of WARRIOR SOUL and devour it.
Rating: Summary: Great cover photo but it's not Chuck Review: Chuck is a great and accomplished guy, but at the risk of disappointing the reviewer from Illinois who loves the book's cover photo...it's not of Chuck. It's a US Navy photo of a SEAL and it is public domain.
Rating: Summary: WOW What a ride! Review: Chuck Pfarrer's Warrior Soul is an incredible read. An extremely well written narrative of his life focusing on his career as a Navy SEAL. Read the first chapter and you won't want to put it down. A brilliant and compelling introspective look at what it was like to be an operator. A true Hero. Thank you for your service to our country.
Rating: Summary: Joe H. Miller Place NY the sickest book ever made by man Review: Chuck's well writen book does something that most Team books don't. It's Loud and Clear what sets Team guys apart: What they do when all else fails.
