Summary: This book is excellent!
Review: I really liked the way Lee started out each chapter with criminal cases and then analogized them to various aspects of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. I was moved most by the interview with the pathologist. I was so touched that I cried as I read the book on a plane! God bless you, Lee for your book and may it cause many to come to Christ. I ordered a six-pack of Strobels myself to pass out to people I know who don't know Christ personally.

Summary: OUTSTANDING - A MUST READ FOR ALL SEEKERS
Review: THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR ALL BELIVERS IN JESUS CHRIST AND AN EXCEPTIONAL WHITENESSING TOOL

Summary: A decent low-level appologetics book, but not enought depth
Review: When I first read this book, I thought it was pretty good. Looking back a couple of years later, I'm not so sure.

Strobel does a good job of getting the information. He focuses too much, however, on an evangellical standpoint, and as a result, he doesn't reallly show all of the issues. He really needs to look at a wider variety of scholars (i.e. John Meier, Raymond Brown.)

What I fear is that this will be a book for big evangelical parents to give to their little evangelical kids, so that they will grow up to be Big evangellical parents themselves. This is not the be-all-end-all appologetic book. There are much better ones and much worse ones. I think that Strobel, in general, is more critical that McDowel (at least in ETDAV), but he has less material.

Don't accept this book uncritically. Reading this book is no excuse for reading a wider variety of literature. One of the neat things about the controversy over the bible is that it has driven me to study it further, thereby gaining useful knowledge of the cultural and texual issues behind the New Testament. This may be a neat starting book, but it is nowhere near as thourough as it could/should be

Summary: God will use it to change your life if you let it
Review: If you are looking for meaning, direction, the truth and a purpose in life this book will help lead you to the person who can if you decide to believe the messege it is presenting.

Great for believers. It will strenghten your faith in the heat of a debate with a Skeptic.

Summary: Hmmm.... Better go with Josh McDowell or Something.
Review: The "Evidence" presented here is very poorly thrown together -- more of an "entertaining" book than a book of hard facts. Describing people's facial expressions and agreeing with each other on points that leave many many questions open is very questionable.

If one wants "proofs", one can buy Josh McDowell's EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT, or other books which are available -- one called MANy INFALLIBLE PROOFS (can't remember the author's name, sorry). But this book is all fluff, and very little actual substance.

If you want a weak but entertaining presentation of the case for Christ, or as a Christian you want to add to the reason that you believe, this book is great! However, as a tool to "prove" to someone that Christ is God, it is very poor.

I agree fully with Strobel's conclusions (!), and regret that people may read this book and think that this flop of an argument is the best defense for Christ as a historical figure.

Again, the information is fine, but lacks tons of answers that could have been included.

Thanks.

If you disagree with me, rather than email me and bash me about it, please just leave your own review or hold your comments. Last time I reviewed a book, everyone intruded my inbox rather than having the courtesy to use this forum to post your opinion [as I have, and many others have]. Thanks!

Summary: Outstanding book lives up to its reputation
Review: I purchased this book from Amazon.com because I read an enthusiastic endorsement from Billy Graham. He was right. This is the first book I've ever seen on evidence for the Christian faith that is both authoritative and readable at the same time. In fact, I couldn't put it down! It was written by a former atheist and skeptic who interviews top-flight scholars about their findings concerning Jesus. Contrary to a few other reviewers, I believe the author displayed appropriate skepticism where warranted, but also showed a healthy respect for solid answers when they were offered by the experts. This book deserves the awards it has received (including a Gold Medallion) for its unique approach to the extremely important issue of who Jesus really is.

Summary: if you don't believe the bible, you won't believe this
Review: When I began reading this book, I had just started reading the Bible, and was hoping this would help me on my way to becoming a Christian. Instead, it made me almost anti-Christian, for the simple fact that so many Christian readers on this site gave it props for proving their faith--I certainly don't want to buy into anything they believe if they respect THIS journalistic garbage. I don't see how anyone can read this book without seeing the MASSIVE holes in his arguments. His questioning starts off with a claim from an atheist or sceptic, and he presents this claim to a Christian scholar and THEN PROCEEDS TO BUY ALMOST EVERYTHING THEY SAY. Some chapters read almost like a monologue, with Mr. Strobel only adding his weakly phrased questions:"but what do you say to so and so's view", or "don't you think such and such disproves your evidence?" He then accepts their answer when I had about thirty more questions to ask. Equally annoying, in each chapter he spends a great deal of time admiring his subjects' character, as if the fact that they are such great people should make me buy into what they believe. Not once does he interview a sceptic. This "blunt, tough questioning," rather than producing "expert testimony and incontrovertible evidence," instead made me gag at the blatant, broad assumptions and half-truths that his arguments relied on. The reason this book got 2 stars rather than 1 is that he presents some interesting facts that are are worth knowing, and his presentation of the crucifixion is quite moving--when Jesus died on the cross, it must have been terrible indeed, no matter who he was. Unfortunately, this chapter is basically irrelevent to Mr. Strobel's advertised achievement, and he should have spent those pages developing his very lacking arguments. After reading this book, I decided, as I think everyone should, to read the Bible alone, and decide from there. Any belief bolstered by shabby arguments such as this, whether by a cult leader or Mr. Strobel, is frightening indeed.

Summary: Interesting reading with thought provocing facts.
Review: Stroble does a good job of mixing up his subject interviews as he slowly builds his case for Jesus Christ. He uncovered information that the common person would not be familiar with.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A good starting point for Christian and skeptic alike!
Review: For the Christian: for those who have not yet encountered questions on the historicity of the Christian faith then this is a useful place to start equipping yourself. Each chapter briefly looks at an issue surrounding Jesus in a conversational style. I would suggest that this book could be understood by most 15 - 16 year olds and upwards.

For the skeptic: again this is a good clear overview of the evangelical Christian position. I would image that the majority skeptics will not be familiar with the evidence presented (like many Christians) so the book may be a good place to start your investigations. It will probably not convince skeptics who have studied the various subjects presented.

In summary all Christians and skeptics should read about Jesus and this is as good an entry point as you will get.

Summary: Convincing & Thought Provoking
Review: I was extremely impressed by this book from Chapter 1. It gives actual evidence that Jesus really DID exist... and that our belief is not in vain. It also shows that the Gospels can withstand scientific scrutiny - and pass with flying colors. Incredible.
