Rating: Summary: Amazing Story about an American Legend Review: This book is a stunning tale about Seabiscuit, a horse who became an unexpected legend even though he had a sloppy gate or stance when running and was a lot smaller than most racehorses. But, even though this book is centered on Seabiscuit there were many other characters like Red Pollard, Mr. Smith, and Howard who faced grueling challeges also. It is very well written and detailed by its author Laura Hillenbrand. While reading this epic tale, I felt Like I was on the racetrack and riding "the Biscuit". I even felt like I was cheering Seabiscuit on in the inside. One feature that I liked about this book was how it had pictures with Seabiscuit and the many of the other characters at the front of each chapter. I also liked how the aithor Hillenbrand gave details on how all of the many characters in this book came about to racing horses. Now, this book is not for those who do not like reading the background information and many other details that this book contains. But, if you want a great story about an underdog who rose up to the top while facing many obstacles and challenges this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: Really - When I say "I'm not a horse person," I MEAN IT! Review: Gave this one a whirl because everybody I spoke to said, "Oh, even if you're not a horse person, you'll like it!" Well, they lied. It's somewhat interesting, but Hillenbrand goes into so much petty detail of each of the character's lives, detailing what they eat for breakfast for example... The horse doesn't even turn up till about a quarter of the way through the book! If you're not a horse person, my advice to you is - see the movie!
Rating: Summary: LIFE CHANGING Review: "SEABISCUIT" is not so much a story about a horse, but rather a story about the lives of the men which that horse changes. Red is an orphan of the depression. Scrapping to get by after abandoned by his parents, Red is half blinded as a "boxer" in human-versions of warehouse dog fights. He turns to horse racing. Although technically too big to be a jockey, he starves himself to make weight. Buick is a bicycle repairman who stumbles into automobile manufacturing and makes a fortune. When he loses a member of his family in an automobile accident, the family crumbles. Red and Buick are broken men who come together because of Seabiscuit. Buick is the owner of the scrappy horse, and his broken cowboy trainer insists Red is the only jockey with the scrappy fire to ride it. "SEABISCUIT" is as much their story as that of the horse. Ironic that a story about a horse can end up being such a "human" story. Judged on those merits "SEABISCUIT" is a gripping drama that is in the same league as "MY FRACTURED LIFE" and "THE DA VINCI CODE."
Rating: Summary: So much better than the movie Review: The poetic writing of Laura Hillenbrand is incredibly evocative of the period in which this story takes place. I learned so much about the life of people involved in horseracing from reading this. The book combines a moving and interesting human drama with the story of a little understood sport. The horse is at the center of a web of characters and their tales are woven together with great skill. I saw the movie first and enjoyed it but the book is far better and well deserving of the bestselling status it has achieved.
Rating: Summary: A Horse and an Era - Nicely Written Story Review: There were piles of the book at our local bookstore and of course the movie - so I knew the book was popular. If you are thinking of buying this book you will not be disappointed if you do so. It is a delightful and good read and will not disappoint. The book entertains while transmitting a feel for the 1930's era and the evolution of America at that time. The book entertains with strong characters and excellent writing. There is a nice selection of photos sprinkled through the book. It is a good buy and a good gift. Five Stars for an excellent 400 page book about more than just a race horse.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational and Heartwarming Review: I am a horse owner and love and respect this animal immensely, which only added to my enjoyment of this book. I thought the movie was great, but the book is even better. The story initially may seem slow - with the introduction of the main characters and their background and history; however, that does not detract from the fact that this is a fantastic book. Inspirational, heartwarming, and, in my view, a classic. A book for everyone. If I could rate this greater than 5 stars, I would.
Rating: Summary: A race to the end Review: Riveting, engrossing read. You won't want to put it down. It's a bit slow at first before Seabiscuit comes on the scene, but the story of Charles Howard, the owner, Tom Smith, the trainer, and Red Pollard, the rider, is remarkable. They are all incredible characters in American history. You will not only come away from the book with a wonderful knowledge of horse racing, weight handicaps, the awesome athleticism of both horses and jockeys, but you will also understand the Great Depression better, the growth of the auto industry, the emergence of the West as a region. Plus, you might fall in love with Seabiscuit. He's a lazy, knobby-kneed horse that stole the heart of the nation, and it's easy to see why. I couldn't get enough; I just wanted to know more. And it was beautifully written. There were parts I just wanted to read aloud. As the competition between War Admiral and Seabiscuit heats up, it is impossible to put the book down. I wish I could read this book again for the first time.
Rating: Summary: Seabiscuit - An inspiring story Review: This book is well written. There is so much information about the three people. The book starts off introducing the main characters that will play a central role to the rise of Seabiscuit. It starts out with the early years of the owner, trainer, and jockey, leads into their tragedies, and finally culminates in the meshing of the characters with Seabiscuit. It shows how one horse brought them all together and help overcome their tragedies. There are small antecdotes (spelling?) about Seabiscuit. The book taught me about horse racing and handicaps. Although the tone of the book resembles more of a history text book, it is written in a manner that is very engaging. Read the story, its worth it!
Rating: Summary: Seabiscut = greatest horse of all time! Review: I loved this book it was very fast paced yet did not invovle sword fighting this book gave me a very good picture of the eara it was set in this book is a horse lover& everyone else best buy!
Rating: Summary: Seabiscut Review: Seabiscut is mainly about a horse who works his way up from a stage where he was beat to becoming a syar. It also about jockeys, their life and how they live. SEabiscut is a great book, I loved it. Like most books the boring part is n the beginning. Some parts were either breathtaking or devastating. If you havn't read or seen the movie, then I advise you to read the book first. I think that the book tells more than the movie. Also if you read the book first than you may understand it more. It also talks about accidents and/or about wins.
