Rating: Summary: If you love horseracing. Review: Ms. Hillenbrand may have embellished the facts or not but she certainly wrote a nice warm story. It's obvious she did a lot of homework and research to string together so many facts that makes the book read very much like a novel. When I look back at this horse, whether it happened exactly like that or not, matters not. It is the way I would want everyone to remember this story if I had written it. If you grew up with the horsetrack as your hobby, if you go to Vegas and truck off to the sports parlor to bet on the tracks instead of Blackjack then this will be a very nice read for you. Even money you will love it.
Rating: Summary: User Friendly Review: From the first words in the book right through to the end, this book is spellbinding to the point you cannot put it down. You will wish to have lived in that era as you read about the horse racing that was coming into a time of its own. So educational - for while you are reading this documentary type book, it reads like a first-rate novel you can't put down. Anything but dry or tedious, you will savor the verbiage of the book, as well as the leading characters, not the least of whom is Seabiscuit.
Rating: Summary: a great story and storyteller Review: This woman can write!....and what a great american story....the depth of detail, and the passion of her writing only make me hope she writes another book about another horse...thank you Laura.
Rating: Summary: A Depression Era History Review: Dad liked this book, because it was not just a book about Seabiscuit, which he wanted, but also an interesting tale of life during the Depression.
Rating: Summary: Seabiscuit comes alive! Review: I didn't expect to like this book to the degree I did. I'd read the reviews of course, but thought, no, it's just about this horse. Well, this horse seems more alive than most people, then and now. The prose is magnificent. The details are riveting. Who thought one could care about the injuries to someone 60 years ago that I'd never heard of? The helpful hints on how to lose 10 pounds overnight could be used by everyone who has a wedding to go to. The picture of this horse and his people is magnificent and something I couldn't put down. Hillenbrand spent 4 years on the research. I even read the research notes!
Rating: Summary: Seabiscuit by a mile Review: The characters in this book--of all species--should inspire us all to do truly great things. It took a masterfully crafted telling of this true story to bring this fact into perspective. During the race sequences, I found myself re-reading paragraphs just to re-live the excitement. Pollard's resiliency throughout the story was something I will not soon forget. It was a direct reflection of Seabiscuit's, and the last 50 pages were the most fitting, poetic and dazzling I have ever read. That this is non-fiction makes it that much more special. Thank you, Laura Hillenbrand, for treating all who read this book to such inspiration. When we're faced with life's competitors, we should all utter Woolf's immortal words: "So long, Charley."
Rating: Summary: A MUST Read!.. Seabiscuit Will Find a place in your heart.. Review: The book is well written and fast paced. Laura Hillenbrand's work will wrile you into a supercharged crescendo. More than once, I cheered outloud for seabiscuit as read the book. The priciple players in the story are colorful and endearing I live not far from Tanforan park which is one of the many places that Seabiscuit used to run. It burned down in 1964 and now the land is occupied by a second rate shopping mall(no Nordstoms). There is a life size statue of Seabiscuit 'right smack dab' in the middle of the parking lot, right in front of JC Penny. How ironic that one of the greatest inspirations of the twentieth century be honored in such a fashion. I doubt the masses of professional shoppers know why that little horse is there but thank God he is. Now,I smile and look his way every time I drive by . What heart and character he had! My wife who prefers 'self help' or non-fiction may even pick up biscuit. If this dosen't fill your cup then nothing will. Buy it.
Rating: Summary: Hillenbrand is a Splendid Wordsmith Review: This is a wonderful read, Hillenbrand weaves her words together in a delicious manner. You don't have to care about horses or racing to be swept up in this story as she covers the history of Seabiscuit's owners, trainers, jockies and traumas all in the depths of the Great Depression. Beautifully researched, great photos, characters fleshed out in depth. Wow!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Characterization Review: Seabiscuit is filled with interesting details and descriptions about life amongst racehorses such as how the jockey's make their weight before their races. The introduction of each character is rich with description, so intertaining! This fast read keeps you eager to turn each page. Seabiscuit appeals not only horsemen but also to cityslickers like me.
Rating: Summary: Treat yourself--Read this book! Review: If you only read one book this summer, do yourself a favor and read Seabiscuit:An American Legend. Love or knowledge of horseracing is not necessary to enjoy this wonderful story of an American hero. I never followed horse racing, yet found myself unable to put this book down. Laura Hillenbrand writes this true story as if it were a fictional tale. My words can't possibly do this book justice--just read it and soon you too will be cheering, "Go Biscuit!!"
