Summary: Terrific book
Review: A great read! This true story of an amazing horse reads like excellent fiction. It covers a fascinating aspect of US history as it traces Seabiscuit's future owner, trainer and jockey from the early 1900's through the depression. The prose is rich and clear; the races are exciting; the horse has a big heart and a personality you'll never forget. Don't miss this one. And never fear, you do not need to be a horse racing fan to love this book.

Summary: Hell of a book!
Review: I read a lot of non-fiction. This is one of the best books I have read in a while. Amazingly well researched and a great read.

Summary: Beyond Must Read!
Review: my dad used to take my brother and me to arlington park in chicago, and i still can see him shaking his head with his
(innumerable) non-winning tickets..

i was never really a horse racing fan, however.

but, let me assure any who may read these words---ms.
hillebrand has written an ungodly beautiful story.

it should be required reading in any history class at
any level.

parents should read this story of guts, intuition and
determination to their children.

it is what the united states is---a nation birthed by
those who helped this amazing horse reach its supremacy;
visionaries with an idea that nothing will derail.

you get to the point reading this book that you are so
completely lost and mesmerized by the people and the horse,
you never want it to end.

i miss seabiscuit and tom smith and red pollard.

you will, too.

read it, read it, read it! especially those of you who have
an influence over young people in the classroom.

no, i take that back---read it for an unqualified affirmation
that so many incredible people --and animals-- have made this
country the greatest experiment in change and success in the
history of the world.

i would consider it a privilege just to be in the same room
with laura hillebrand.

congratulations, ms. hillebrand, you and every player in your
great book are what has made us great.

please write more! you've got the gift...

Summary: A Great Read
Review: This book was recommended to me by a friend. I am not at all a horse-racing fan - I know nothing about horses, but I had a hard time putting this book down. It was completely engrossing.

The author does a great job with pace in this book. She goes into a pretty good amount of detail about the nuances of horse racing and jockey life, but I never found it to be slow or dull. It's also a very well written book. The prose is easy, clear, and the author does a great job bringing her characters to life.

This is a kind of bad-news-bears story about a knobby-kneed horse, a down-on-his-luck jockey, a mysterious horseman, and flamboyant owner who come together to form the Seabiscuit team. People who like uplifting stories, rooting for the underdog, or well-written sports books will probably love this book.

Summary: WAY too much detail.
Review: It was interesting, well written, etc, and the writer's personal accomplishments in spite of her illnesses are amazing.
I had heard of all of the "historical perspective" that I would learn about this era - - didn't see much of that at all in this book. It was ALL about horses and nothing else. The life of Red is a very sad one and the chemistry between Smith & and the horse was really amazing. I just don't know that this book needs to be 300+ pages long.

Summary: Amazing!
Review: I don't read very much and when I do its usually sports, or commercial airline travel. When I received this book as a gift I thought it was a joke. Horse Racing, I don't even watch the Kentucky Derby!!.

It was very enjoyable. Laura Hillenbrand wrote an amazing book about an amazing horse, in an era when there was not very much.

If you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this book. Buy it, if you love competition and good reading. Buy it You won't be disappointed

Summary: Bravo
Review: Well written. Great storytelling with colorful characters. Even if you don't have an interest in horseracing, or even horses as such, the human drama pulls you into the story and keeps you turning the pages.

Summary: The Meaning of "Heart"
Review: I've been around horses all my life (not race horses) and somehow you know when you've met a special one. Seabiscuit was one of those special horses and Lauren Hillenbrand has written a remarkable book Other memorable animals come to mind as in "The Wreck of the Ethie" and "Black Gold" which are two of my favorite books. "Seabiscuit" is now on my short list. Reading this book is a ride the reader won't soon forget.

Summary: A Marvelous and Enriching Story... a true masterpiece!
Review: Up to the time that I became aware of this book, I thought that the Seabiscuit was "just another racehorse with a name more suitable for punchlines by the Three Stooges. After all, I never saw his name listed among any of the Triple Crown winners or even as a winner of a Triple Crown race. That's a testament to my personal ignorance however. I now know however, that as a cultural phenomenon, Seabiscuit compares favorably with Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth.

It's not that he won horse races, it's the way he won horse races. It's the way he overcame challenges. The individual stories of the people that comprised "Team Biscuit" could have easily drawn the attention of writers with lesser talents, but Laura Hillenbrand puts the spotlight squarely on this wonderful horse; skillfully weaving in the exploits of his owner, trainer and jockeys to illustrate how he won the hearts and minds of a depression-battered nation.

There is something for everyone here. Have you ever wondered about how someone could train a racehorse? How a human can exploit, while simultaneously protect the competitive heart of an animal? How a horse can affect the lives of so many? Seabiscuit is a book that is almost impossible to put down (yes, I know that's a cliché) but you won't believe how much sleep I happily lost because of this book. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Summary: Great Book for Horse Lovers!!!
Review: It was a great book about the men that discovered the little horse, and helped make him become famous. It also gives you a good inside look into the racing world of the 1930's, a jockey's life of that time, and the start of the automobile in California. It had some humor to it also. Once I got into the book, I couldn't keep away from it.
